Ray had an answering machine all to himself in college in the early 80's?

This makes no sense. Ray said it all happened twenty years earlier, which put the incident the Karen breakup in the very early 80's. From all indications Ray always lived at home. Even if he did live in the dorm, he most likely had at least one roommate. So why did he an answering machine to himself. I lived in a dorm in the early eighties and shared a wall rotary phone with roommates. All that aside, answering machines did not become common and affordable until at least 1985. I realize this is fiction, but the writers didn't think this one through. 🤔

Whats not to love?

Warning: Spoilers
I found this episode to be one of the best episodes of the series of Everybody loves Raymond. Debra and Raymond are discussing an old breakup tape that Raymond had saved from his college days from a girlfriend. Debra thinks it's strange that he kept it. She kept gifts from her exes but not breakup tapes. So ray wants to know where all these gifts are and then replaces them all with new better things. The best parts are the picture frame and the peppermill which is bigger than the old one. I also had an answeing machine to myself in college so yes it could happen. And the year was approx the same as when Raymond would have been in college. I also think Debra acted very rationally as she usually does. So this was a great episode for me!
