Just to let you know, this is not a spin-off. Well, it might have been but it never got passed the pilot (this episode). Anyway, it seems TV has become more educational in the future, so I guess they've done away with daytime talk shows and reality shows. But these educational shows are not as big of hits as the president of Asteroid Television Studios, Mr. Transistor, had hoped for. He takes his lazy writing staff to a luncheon to help inspire them for something new and original, without having to resort to shows about cowboys or doctors. Looking over the terrace, Transistor sees Elroy and Astro playing and suddenly it hits him: Space Boy and his Dog. The perfect new, original and exciting television drama that would sweep the Space Emmys for sure. Sending his writers to work on the script, Mr. Transistor approaches Elroy and is greeted by a bite in the buttocks from Astro. Suddenly, Elroy is summoned home by Jane and in the process, Transistor catches the name Jetson, and decides to follow them home... Once the producer arrives at the Skypad Apartments, he meets Jane and says he'd like her son to star in his latest show. She asks Elroy, who didn't seem to care one way or another, so it was all settled. In a muffled fit of hysteria, Jane calls George at work who, after being chewed out by Spacely again and again and is told he must work unpaid overtime that night, jumps at the good news of his son being a TV star and making more money than him, and quits on the spot. Spacely pleads for him to stay, offering a guarantee that he would not cut his pay. No dice. But what's worse, when Mr. Spacely tells his wife that George's son is going to be on TV, Mrs. Spacely demands he get their son Arthur on too;
But one member of the Jetson family isn't too happy for Elroy. Judy. Jealous for some reason, but tries to butter up her brother in hopes of getting a cameo on the show. Being smarter than his sister, Elroy declines, leaving Judy to simply shout, "kid brothers!" and laments she is only the big sister of "Space Boy, zoom!" Um...okay? George, Astro and Elroy soon leave to start filming the pilot episode. They arrive on Jupiter to meet with Mr. Transistor, who can't seem to keep Astro off the seat of his pants, sets up the scene, and all goes smoothly until George insists on helping, constantly wanting changes done here and there. Getting a sinister idea, Transistor casts George as the mad scientist who sics a robot on Space Boy and Astro. When pressing a button, the robot turns back and attacks its master...the mad scientist. George gets the bejesus kicked out of him and decides to quit. Transistor is pleased, until Elroy and Astro also want to quit for some reason. Heading home, George runs into Mr. Spacely who pleads for him to get his son on the show. Well, long story short, Arthur Spacely is now Space Boy, and Mr. Spacely is the mad scientist, after making numerous suggestions, and gets his butt handed to him by the evil robot. It was a tough, strenuous occupation, but nothing beats show biz.
Pretty good episode. That scene with Judy trying to get on Elroy's show can only be seen on the DVD. I guess commercials kept it off the syndicated airing. Too bad we never got to see what Space Boy, zoom! was really about. Super hero kid and super dog, I guess. I think in the 1970s there was a short-lived show with Astro as a super dog. I don't remember much about it, but I do know Astro was on it, and he was accompanied by some other dogs...oh well. That can be considered a Jetsons spin-off. So, when you get the chance, check out "Elroy's TV Show" or as they call it internationally, "The Jetsons."
