This show should have been called FRIENDS OF DAN AUGUST since the continuing theme is that Burt Reynolds' title character always winds up either investigating the deaths of or the innocence or guilt of his friends: being close with him is as dangerous as being looked up on by Columbo's wife, but that's another story...
Pretty good episode begins with a botched racetrack robbery and it was Dan's best friend (again, he has many) who died... His pretty wife Julie Mannix cries making Dan want to find out the truth even more, but there isn't as much urgency in the plot or script as Burt's initial stamina walking out from the headquarters to the small town, where the usual questioning occurs...
The mysterious element isn't WHO done it but who the guilty party is sending the widow money, and includes character-actor Michael Pataki as one of the hoods.
