FAMILY is director John Landis' second entry in the brilliant Showtime program, "Masters of Horror." Although he is better known for such screwball comedies as ANIMAL HOUSE and THE BLUES BROTHERS, he also directed AN American WEREWOLF IN London. So he is good at taking a sick, disturbing, scary story, and adding a little deranged humor in it.
In this installment, George Wendt, best known as Norm Peterson on "Cheers," plays Harold Thompson, a middle-aged single man living in a suburban McMansion who seems okay, but has human skeletons in his house which he calls his "family." Then comes a young married couple, Celia & David who move right across the street.
This episode is sort of like Landis' dark, comedic version of PSYCHO and THE Texas CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It has a TCM style death chamber in the middle of suburbia, which you can't help but laugh at. There is also an interesting twist in the last ten minutes of the movie, which should by no stretch of the mind be spoiled.
It was great to see George Wendt make an interesting comeback. His character is very sick on the inside, but lovable on the outside. Different character than Norm Peterson I imagine.
