A good movie, but...
ui1029 April 2007
I've just seen this movie in the Ferrara Plaza's cinemas and i liked, it's a good story, with excellent actors (José Eduardo, Pedro Alpiarça and Adriano Luz are great) but there are a lot of problems! Almost all the typical Portuguese cinema's problems. First there is a screenplay with good moments and a good story but without a logical sequence, then there is a bad direction, not a bad actor's direction, but the way this movie happens! there isn't a believable central story, it is too confuse and the edition is horrible! "Dot.Com" is a good movie, no doubts about that but if it had been directed, edited or written by other people, people who have talent with the camera and with the images, this could be brilliant...

Globalism reaches the end of the world
link_player6915 April 2007
This movie is a satirical critic to the difference between the young globalist generation and their grandparents who still live in small villages. A small village in Portugal called Águas-Altas is being sued by a Spanish multinational corporation because the village hosts a website that uses the same name as an international brand of mineral water,so a judicial battle for website begins, this however is quickly turned in to a media circus, thus the residents of this small village who are not even sure of what is the internet, are forced defend their website and their village's honor. A great comedy for all ages, and on a side note, you don't have to know what internet is to like the movie.

Hollywood directors: plz follow
antoniorego4 September 2008
Dot.com is a very good movie, therefore the 10 most people would ask why... since there are no super powers, no explosions or even explicit sex... which is the trademark of Hollywood...

my reasons for such an opinion follow: 1- the story is actually possible. plausible. there is not one single moment of the movie where you think «wtf this is bs!!». Remember we are talking about Europe. Portugal has more than 850 years of existence and a lot of our continents languages come from Latin, so its not a coincidence, but merely something bound to happen at some time, as said by the law of large numbers: too many villages, too many corporations. Plus, the fact that it all happens in 9 days.

2- the acting is very credible: for those of you that do not know the interior of Portugal, it might seem far-fetched, but actually it is very well portrayed. the mob mentality, the little villages gossiping, the reasons behind the ridiculous beyond all reason. All part o fa small town in an under developed area of a very old country.

3- you just don't expect what happens. that obviously comes from the mob mentality that changes like the wind. first tech equals bad, then its national pride at its best, then its money talks, and its all spiced up by good research by good consultants that know about the business world. the end is not only possible, but clever. we are in the age of leasing after all he-he.

a great example of what a small movie production company can do with a low budget, provided they work on a topic they know about.

Hollywood directors, less explosions, less Rambo's, less flaws in plausible deniability: give us stuff that is interesting, unusual, but not unreal. remember that most of the worlds battles were resolved without a single shot fired or a single drop of blood shed. thats why we invented the law. its worth exploring.

A wonderful comedy
jeremiah23299 March 2008
I recently saw this film at the Sedona International Film Festival. I found this to be a charming comedy about a village's battle with a multinational company and the Portuguese government over their domain name. As another reviewer said, it isn't necessary to have much knowledge about the internet and domain names to enjoy this film. When I explained the movie to some friends, I immediately told them not to worry about the intricacies of international law and trademark infringement that form the device that launches the movies plot. Why? Because this is a movie about people and it is filled with a cast of wonderful characters. No one is just a plot device. From top to bottom the characters are interesting, quirky and just fun to watch interacting with each other. I highly recommend this film My only complaint was that at times the subtitles were a bit difficult to read against various backgrounds. A truly enjoyable film!
