The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

It seems like the “trend” of quarantine film is here to stay, essentially providing an opportunity to filmmakers to shoot their movies in the most minimalistic fashion. “Insane” is one of those titles, focusing exclusively on a confession.
“Insane” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
The short begins with a slow-motion sequence through a series of narrow streets in a rundown neighborhood, thus setting the location the narrative is to unfold. Chanting-like music accompanies the movement of the camera, before it changes into something more cheerful that is revealed to be coming from the radio of a man who is preparing his coffee. The camera changes angles to show his movements, but his face is never revealed. That is until he moves into the next room, closes the door behind him, and soon places a camera in order to record himself. All the time, the annoying sound of a fly is heard.

Normally a sound sleeper, Adam McKay was restless. It was late October, and he’d just finished his new movie, Don’t Look Up. But that wasn’t the issue. The award-winning writer, comedian, director and producer was worried about the COP26 environmental summit thousands of miles away in Glasgow, Scotland. Leonardo DiCaprio, his ally in the climate change movement and the star of his new film, was attending the conference and would text McKay updates. McKay wished more was happening.
McKay may not be able to single-handedly solve the climate crisis, but he’s in firm control of his new film,...

Featuring, perhaps, the most serious discussion of first amendment rights from two grown men in clown makeup, “The United States of Insanity” dares you to laugh at the absurdity of Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope’s oddly-loved Insane Clown Posse before diving headfirst into a lengthy, and occasionally heady, conversation regarding the power structures behind who is allowed to dictate musical taste and the ways in which the government attempts to act as cultural curators.

Devonté Hynes fills the world of Luca Gaudagnino’s We Are Who We Are with airy piano scores and haunting synth numbers that give color and character to the Chioggia military base and its eclectic group of residents. However, when the Blood Orange front man isn’t tying the lush scenes of Italy’s coast together with original music, he’s part of the story – as an integral figure in the season finale and as an idol for Jack Dylan Grazer’s teenage protagonist, Fraser.
We Are Who We Are may be Hynes’ first venture into the world of television scoring, but the creator’s far from new to the Hollywood scene. In 2013 he composed original music for Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto and Melina Matsoukas’ Queen & Slim in 2019. Hynes recently took home an ASCAP London Music Award for his Ost for the drama starring Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya.

The Secrets We Keep just might be Joel Kinnaman’s most demanding film yet, and that’s saying something for an actor who played Alex Murphy in 2014’s RoboCop, Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon and Rick Flag in two Suicide Squad movies. Co-starring alongside Noomi Rapace and Chris Messina in Yuval Adler’s latest thriller, Kinnaman plays Thomas, a Swiss factory worker in the American suburbs who’s captured by Rapace’s Maja and accused of torturing her family during World War II. For much of the film, Kinnaman is bound and gagged as realistically as possible, which took its toll on Kinnaman.

We haven’t seen the Astronaut compete on “The Masked Singer” since he won a place in the top six back on April 8. He returns to compete on the April 29 episode, “The Battle of The Sixes: The Final 6.” Of the half dozen celebrities still in the hunt for the Golden Mask, the Astronaut has the strongest voice.
We were surprised when he ended up in danger of being eliminated on the quarterfinal, but blame his song choice, “If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes. He certainly redeemed himself with his cover of the Nsync classic “Bye Bye Bye.” He won over the four judges in the Smackdown with the Kangaroo; she was revealed to be Jordyn Woods.

The April 15 episode of “The Masked Singer” is a special sing-along edition. It showcases past performances by the contenders for the Golden Mask. The lyrics of each song will be seen on screen, allowing viewers to join in. Three of the lucky seven celebrities still in the competition — the Astronaut, Night Angel and Turtle — were featured on the first quarter-final on April 8 (the other four compete in quarterfinal 2 on April 22).
Of this trio, the Astronaut was the one at risk of being eliminated when he ended up in a Smackdown with the Kangaroo; she lost and was revealed to be Jordyn Woods. Doris Day finds herself the target of a malevolent murderer in Midnight Lace (1960), the performer’s last dramatic role prior to her retirement from filmmaking just eight years later in With Six You Get Eggroll (1968). Day, despite being best remembered for her bevy of Rock Hudson rom-coms from this period, was a celebrated method performer, and the toll of taking on a terrorized damsel in distress was enough for her to steer clear of venturing further into genre.…...

As a singer, Doris Day had a warm voice that captivated millions of post-war record-buyers. As an actress, she was a top box office attraction and her name became shorthand for nearly all 1960s romantic comedies: “It’s a Doris Day kind of film.” As a personality, she was loved by the public as a freckle-faced, common-sense gal who seemed like a lot of fun.
Privately, her life was peppered with divorces, tales of spousal abuse, bankruptcy and even connections to the Manson family. The difference between reality and her image were night and Day, so to speak. But it was a very different time. The public didn’t want to hear about the darkness; they just loved her sunniness. And that’s what fans will continue to remember.
She started out as the “girl singer” in the Big Band era, and the song “Sentimental Journey” in 1945 put her on the map.

Doris Day has died at age 97, her foundation said early on May 13. The actress, singer, and activist was one of the last legends of classic Hollywood, and her intense privacy for the last 30 years of her life only enhanced her mystique.
Day was 22 when she recorded her first number-one hit with “Sentimental Journey;” her final acting credit was the TV series “The Doris Day Show,” which ended its run in 1973. But what she packed into those 30 years is extraordinary: nearly 40 movies and five Billboard #1 hits. Although she started to withdraw from Hollywood in the ’70s, followed by the brief run of a Christian Broadcasting Network talk show in 1985-86, it always felt like there was more to discover in her body of work.
That talk show, “Doris Day’s Best Friends,” was legendary in its own right. In 1985, Rock Hudson, Day’s co-star in frothy comedies such as “Pillow Talk” and “Lover Come Back,...

John Collee (l) with Anthony Maras.
John Collee is not only among Australia’s most successful screenwriters, his strike rate of scripts-to-screen is the envy of most of his peers.
The co-creator of Happy Feet, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Tanna and Hotel Mumbai, Collee estimates that one in every three or four feature scripts he’s written has been produced.
He’s not boasting but his batting average compares well to that of Guillermo del Toro. The writer-director of The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Hobbit trilogy recently revealed on social media he had spent years developing 10 films which did not get made.
“Sometimes projects can be taken off you and written by someone else and your name is taken off then, but to have involvement in one of three films I’ve written is a pretty good record,” Collee tells If.

Some people see history as a linear progression, but Hollywood offers plenty of evidence that it’s cyclical. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman,” which opens Aug. 10, is based on true events in the 1970s, but it reflects the current battles over the rise of white supremacists. Back on Jan. 8, 1958, Variety critic Robert J. Landry wrote about the then-topical firestorm over integration, pointing out parallels to the 1915 D.W. Griffith film “The Birth of a Nation.” Landry said Griffith combined “the twin nightmares of folklore in America: rape and race.” He concluded sadly, “This film is woven inextricably into the tapestry of the American film industry.” Nobody tracked box office receipts then, but Landry estimated its worldwide gross was about $50 million, beating the official all-time champ, “Gone With the Wind” ($33.5 million). In other words, there was a huge audience for a film with the stupefying message that the Ku Klux Klan was...

A quick lesson in fan etiquette: If you run up to a Game of Thrones cast member on the street… you should at least make sure you know their character’s name first.

More than a year after Loras Tyrell was burned alive in the Great Sept, TVLine is finally interrogating the man responsible for putting him in the line of (wild)fire.
PhotosGame of Thrones: Jon and Daenerys’ First Meeting Captured
Before recurring on Freeform’s Shadowhunters, Will Tudor was busy stirring up trouble of a different sort on Game of Thrones. His character, a prostitute/spy named Olyvar, carried on a seasons-long affair with Margaery’s late brother — one which ended when he, under Cersei’s instruction, exposed Loras’ homosexual acts for which formal charges were brought against him.

Harmony is an ideal. If everyone just got along, the world could be one big campfire sing-along, a Coke commercial writ large, right? But unfortunately that’s not human nature; certainly not as it pertains to our fellow earthly citizens, or to the globe itself. The ‘70s saw the rise of the eco horror film; “Mother Nature’s back, and she’s pissed” practically emblazoned across posters from the likes of Frogs (1972), Phase IV (1974), and Day of the Animals (1977). Australia threw their hat in the ring at the tail end of the cycle with Long Weekend (1979), a fascinating look at environmental and personal disharmony.
Produced by the Australian Film Commission and the Victorian Film Corporation, and premiering at the 1978 Sitges Film Festival, Long Weekend was released in its native land and the U.S in March of ’79, and didn’t do much business at either end. Perhaps audiences were expecting something a little more visceral,...

Back in November of 2013, when 505 Games and Eko Software released How To Survive, the zombie genre was already beginning to feel stale. Sure, The Walking Dead is still killing it in the ratings, and upcoming titles such as Dying Light and Dead Island 2 look solid, but the undead menace isn’t as popular as it used to be.
Now, in a move to mine every ounce it possibly can out of the undead, 505 Games has re-released its zombie and hot lead mash-up, as How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition. Offering every piece of content the game ever featured, it’s currently available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
For those unfamiliar with the original, How To Survive centers around…well, survival.

Eko Software will be bringing How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this fall.
In case you missed the original release, or actively avoided it, How to Survive is a top-down zombie survival game that tasks players with escaping an island infected by our favorite cultural phenomena. Players can venture through the game’s story mode, or attempt to cross the entire island and reach the getaway vehicle by selecting a challenge mode. In order to survive, players must gather materials, craft weapons, and eliminate any walking corpses that happen to stand in their way.
This latest version of How to Survive includes all six Dlc packages to expand the game in a variety of ways. Players will find themselves exploring new islands, testing their skills in new difficulty settings, experiencing additional survival modes and taking on randomized scenarios, as they attempt to find and repair an escape vehicle.

Australia... it's a vast, beautiful, welcoming country. It's also full to bursting with things that can kill you, if the big screen is to be believed. Inspired by Mia Wasikowska's plucky 1,700-mile trek across the Outback in Tracks, we flag up the traps and tropes she should watch out for.
(Un)Natural Phenomena
Exotic wildlife proliferates Down Under, most of it deceptively lethal. Witness the baby stolen by a dingo in horrifying Meryl Streep-starrer A Cry In The Dark (1988). The same – real – tragedy loosely inspired Razorback, a mullet-tastic 1984 horror about a giant marauding pig, directed by Highlander's Russell Mulcahy (mooted tagline: 'There Can Only Be Oink'). The less said about the ballet-dancing were-roos of The Marsupials: The Howling III (1987), the better.
Much more convincing is the giant CG crocodile munching Radha Mitchell's boat tour group (ex-Neighbours actors constitute an Outback peril all of their own) in 2007's Rogue,...

Andrew talks us through the best of the Eighth Doctor Audio Adventures from Big Finish. No particular reason...
Contains spoilers for The Night of the Doctor and several Big Finish plays.
Now is a very good time to start investigating the Eighth Doctor stories from Big Finish audio productions. If you don't know why, you should probably look here immediately, and maybe have some coffee.
Mentioned in The Night of the Doctor are the names of the Eighth Doctor's audio companions: Charley Pollard, C'rizz, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew and Molly O'Sullivan. The reason this is a big deal is that the Eighth Doctor had previously only appeared in one television story (1996's Doctor Who TV movie), and as a result multiple continuities had opened up across novels, comics and audioplays. The audioplays are still ongoing, and have now been tentatively slotted into the TV continuity.

The big names in horror are frequently recognized by both the genre film community and mainstream entertainment culture. They are often showered with accolades by horror fans and film critics alike. Directors like John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven have secured their place in history.
Many talented directors live in the shadows and are rarely recognized for their hard work and noteworthy contributions to the genre. To remedy that, we are shining the spotlight on five of our favorite underrated horror directors.
Christopher Smith
Christopher Smith has churned out some truly underrated contemporary classics and he himself is vastly underrated on the landscape of horror filmmakers. His films Severance and Creep are vastly different in tonality but both display an affection and understanding of the horror genre not unlike some of the great genre film directors of years past. Severance is full of witty one-liners and contrasted by a hefty dose of ultra violence.

When music fans heard that Elvis Costello was collaborating with the Roots, a few wondered if he might be making his first hip-hop album. Their recently released Wise Up Ghost does have the Rock Hall of Famer eschewing complex melodic turns for vocals that are nearly recitatives over some fairly spare, bottom-heavy beats. But he already had a history of that: You might go back and consider wordy classics like “Pump It Up,” “Tokyo Storm Warning,” and “Episode of Blonde” closer to being rap records than this one is. It’s hard to pin down the spirit

If Hunter Hayes wants to feel as wanted as the person he croons about in his huge crossover hit, he's pretty much there.
Six bids in the Academy of Country Music Awards will do that. The young singer-composer of "Wanted" enters the 48th annual ceremony -- which CBS televises Sunday, April 7, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas -- as one of the top nominees, quite a leap from his being in the running for best new artist last year. Though he didn't get that honor, he did win the Country Music Association's equivalent last fall.

"As a new artist, you have nothing to compare it to, and nothing to prepare you for. People will tell you, 'This is probably how it's gonna go,...
