Doctor Who: The Twin Dilemma: Part 2 starts as intergalactic policeman Hugo Lang (Kevin McNally) relapses back into unconsciousness before he gets the chance to carry out his threat & kill the Doctor (Colin Baker), convinced something sinister is happening on Titan 3 the Doctor & Peri (Nicola Bryant) venture outside the TARDIS & onto the asteroids surface to investigate, there they enter some underground shafts & are captured by a couple of alien beings know as Jacondas & taken back to their base. Once there the Doctor recognises an old friend, Azmael (Maurice Denham) who now goes by the name of Professor Edgeworth & who is now working for an evil space slug named Mestor (Edwin Richfield) & nothing must get in the way of his orders, nothing not even friendship...
This Doctor Who adventure was episode 22 from season 21 that aired here in the UK in early 1984 & was Colin Bakers first story as the Doctor, directed by Peter Moffatt The Twin Dilemma isn't a particularly great choice for a first story although I prefer it to Peter Davison's first Castrovalva (1982). The script by Anthony Stevens isn't really going anywhere, the interest factor isn't there at the moment & the Doctor is just all over the place. He's unstable, has mood swings & there's an embarrassing scene here when he is threatened by gun wielding aliens so he hides behind Peri & blames everything on her, call me old fashioned but this just isn't Doctor Who although I will give some credit to the makers as they at least tried to do something a bit different even if it doesn't really work in my humble opinion. The basic story hasn't really gone forward that much other than the twins are being used for some mathematical calculations by the space slug. The new Doctor is still far from being likable but he's getting better as this story goes on. I can't really say that I'm enjoying The Twin Dilemma much but it's OK I suppose & it's got Peri in it dressed in a very short skirt, boots (even though they look great are high heeled boots really a sensible choice of footwear when navigating the treacherous, rocky & mountainous surface of an isolated asteroid?) & a fetching striped top which would make a lovely pair of curtains...
Speaking of costumes the new Doctor's costume is pretty hideous, whenever he's on screen he's just the centre of attention. He just sticks out like a sore thumb & his costume is just a horrible patchwork monstrosity of bright colours which has the unfortunate effect of having to make the makers dress everyone else up in garish costumes like the guy Hugo Lang who by the end of this episode looks like he's wearing a shirt made from multi coloured tin foil which is even worse than the Doctor's outfit, still at least we can count on Peri who would probably look good in just about anything. Wisely the makers decided not to have any close-ups of the space slug this episode.
The Twin Dilemma is OK at best, it's certainly not the best Doctor Who story I've seen but it's probably not the worst either. Worth a watch for Doctor Who fans but others may have little tolerance for it.
