- An astronomer is forced to leave the city where he lives in order to save his relationship. He ends up returning to the place he never intended to come back: The small town where he was born, stage of a great childhood trauma. Once there, he will discover the truth that will change his life forever.—Zencrane
- Francisco is a boy who comes from a small little town in the interior of the Southern region of Brazil. Like other young boys, he likes to ride his bicycle, fly kites, chase fireflies and is always trying to get away from his older brother. The year is 1969 and, seeing men landing on the Moon, on television, he is touched by the event. He already had an inkling that life was made up of much more than what others had told him about: his friends, his teacher and his father, who is a truck driver and is always on the road. His horizons are truly broadened by Richard, an American pilot who works spraying crops and raises the suspicions of all those in the little town. Of all those except for Francisco, who, with his inherent curiosity, overcomes his fear and gets to know the mysterious foreigner. And the mystery, way up close, turns into fascination and, through getting to know each other, a truly dear friendship is born. Richard, through his enthusiasm, his knowledge on astronomy, and with the help of his plane and his telescope, gives the boy the sky, the stars, and a love for the truth that shines beyond sheer appearances. And he receives, in exchange, a happiness which had been lost forever, lost on the battlefields of the Vietnam war, where he had served in the Air Force. But, for as often as he has promised Francisco a treasure, he himself cant find his own: the anguish that the past brings him is too strong an enemy and he ends up succumbing to it. An experience that truly marks Franciscos life. Thirty-five years go by, and we are now in 2005, and Francisco has become an astronomer held in high esteem, who works and lives in Curitiba (a large city in the Southern region of Brazil), carrying out scientific research and giving classes at a university. His old friendship has brought him a deep love for the Cosmos and for knowledge. But, something has shattered within him: as an adult, he lives as if he were lost in space, buried in his nihilistic view of reality. His nihilism, however, does not stop him from falling in love with Diana, a beautiful woman full of her own mysteries, who is much younger than him. Diana seems to represent, to Francisco, the world back down on Earth, a real and pragmatic existence, so far from the Universe that he seeks to understand. Diana has a strong personality and she is constantly challenging all of the philosophical choices that Francisco has made in life: everything that he believes in, his way of viewing life, is put to the proof at all moments by her. Franciscos desire for her, his tenderness towards her and his desire to get to know Diana better grow stronger and stronger, with each step in his life that he takes in her direction. When he thinks he is truly touching her, Diana slips through his hands, like a whispering wind, here one moment, to make his life more refreshing, yet gone the next. But the one who will end up knocking down all of the fragile certainties that Francisco has built is Greg, who comes into the scene, and is none other than the son of Richard, the American pilot from Franciscos childhood that he had buried in the past, along with the telescope. He seeks Francisco for he desires to know how that man in Air Force clothes, who has stared out to him from a picture frame since his childhood, lived (and died) in Brazil. Francisco, who is forced to become the guide in this trip to his past, will spot the glances exchanged by Diana and the son of his former best friend. And this will be the stone in his shoe that will force Francisco to face himself. After all, is the Universe a vast emptiness, as he teaches his students, or is the vast emptiness in his life?
