Laura Dern has hinted that David Lynch is planning a return to feature filmmaking.
The director has not directed a feature since 2006's Inland Empire, in which Dern starred as an actress who loses her mind in the course of seeking a comeback role.
"I will be working with David Lynch when I'm 80," Dern promised. "He is cooking, he's cooking up trouble, and I will be part of that trouble.
"He's the consummate renaissance man, he just makes art wherever he can get his hands on it. But film, ultimately, I know is his great love, and I think he will always circle back to it. He's definitely cooking."
In recent years Lynch has embraced the internet as a mode of distribution, producing a series of short films including 2002's Rabbits and DumbLand.
"Even if I had a big idea, the world is different now," Lynch said of his future as a director last year.

Shortly after the release of his masterpiece Mulholland Drive, David Lynch took a little downtime to create an early incarnation of the webseries: the aptly titled Dumbland. A profane series of vignettes centered around an irascible man, the bizarrely hilarious episodes feature Lynch’s own chicken scratch and characteristically strong sound design. You can watch all eight of them above, and be sure to stick around for the dancing ants featured in the final episode.

Ah, David Lynch, the highest of high-brows, the maker of swooning, subtle, surrealist masterpieces rich in cinematic lore and strange sexual undertones. And also of crudely animated shorts full of fart jokes, profuse swearing, obscene non-sequiturs and bestiality gags. Huh?No, really, this is a thing, and you can watch it all below. Back in 2002, post-“Mulholland Drive” and arguably at the height of his fame, Lynch chose to savor the moment by drawing and releasing online a short series called “Dumbland,” in which a crude, slobbish, Homer Simpson-like figure roundly abuses the sketchy (in both senses) world around him. The eight episodes together amount to half an hour or so of ultra-crude humor and ultra-simple animation. If this doesn't really seem very Lynchian, well, no, it isn't really. It has sloppily drawn hyper-violence, vague nastiness and incredibly low production values, the last of which is something particularly alien to Lynch.

In the early part of this century, Lynch spent a lot of time putting together his website David Lynch.com. Embracing the internet and the opportunities his own website afforded him, Lynch would make his own shorts available via this medium as well as the weird sitcom Rabbits and animated series Dumbland. Lynch also branched out into coffee sales as his own brand was launched and available through the website. His next film was an even more polarising and baffling effort than anything he had previously made.
Inland Empire (2006)
Financed completely independently and filmed over a period of two years on new digital HD camera’s Inland Empire was initially a collection of scenes cobbled together from both Lynch’s own website (the Rabbits shorts) and scenes he would film with Laura Dern. Eventually the project started to take on some form of narrative plot and Lynch filmed scenes involving...

Sailor (Nicolas Cage) has just been released after a two-year stretch for manslaughter and is picked up outside the prison gates by Lula (Laura Dern), who has been desperately awaiting his release. They set off across the southern states of the Us, heading for California despite Sailor’s parole restrictions and relatively unaware that Lula’s mother (Diane Ladd), who wants to keep Lula and Sailor apart, but is becoming increasingly unhinged, has despatched a series of peculiar/demented individuals to find them and kill Sailor.

David Lynch was awarded the coveted Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1990 for this, his fifth theatrical feature as a director and at that point arguably his most accessible film. Although Lynch’s distinctive dream-like visuals are laced throughout once again, disrupting the narrative and evoking something more impressionistic, that core narrative is in fact very conventional and wholly coherent. Young couple in love,...

David Lynch box set
The box set can be a blessing for those who file their movies. For instance, where would you put Eraserhead? Is it science fiction, horror or comedy? It's all and none of those. Better to put it with all the other David Lynch films, and now – thanks to this impressive Blu-ray box set – you can.
Where some great films have been a missed opportunity when transferred to HD, the Lynch collection does the job properly. The picket fences in Blue Velvet have never looked so perfect; Eraserhead takes you much further into its harrowing nightmare world; the flames that burn through Wild At Heart seem more dangerous and vibrant. Those Lynch films that are, often unfairly, held in lower regard are ripened for reappraisal: the wonderful Dune has some of his strangest and most imaginative moments, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me stands as a deep,...

After making magic from a mess with 'Mulholland Drive,' David Lynch retreated from Hollywood and created a red-curtained world on the Internet. There were no cherry pies and blue velvet in his Web wonderland, but there was dark, black coffee and short entertainment like 'DumbLand.'
Like most sites, buzz petered off over the years, becoming dormant as Lynch busied himself with transcendental teachings and miscellaneous art projects. But as his music projects increase, from red curtain singers to dark nights of the soul to self-released CDs, it was only a matter of time before his current interests breathed new life into past projects.
David Lynch is bringing back his .com as "a secret room filled with music," and you can set your clocks: It will happen on Thursday, "sometime between 1:23 and 1:38Pm Pacific time."

The idea of a future dependent on robots, with human jobs taken over by them, is now a staple of futuristic science-fiction. Robot doctors, robot cab drivers, robot maid… but what about those jobs you never expect would be taken over? Say, nude model for an art school?
It’s the idea behind The Unclothed Man of the 35th Century Ad, where art students have gotten used to drawing androids. In order to subvert this, a human rebel infiltrates an art school posing as a nude model android. His mission: to trick art students into drawing a human being without knowing it. With such a weird premise, you can expect the series to look as warped as it is. In look and tone, it kind of reminds me of David Lynch’s animated series Dumbland.
The four-episode series (with a fifth bonus making-of episode) is created by alt comics artist...

For the coffee drinking, cherry pie eating, chicken dancing fans of David Lynch everywhere, the announcement of his return to film making should be a glorious one. Yet, as always with the eccentric maestro, there is something of a catch.
The last decade has been a quiet one in the way of film work for David Lynch. Not that he hasn’t kept busy – aside from maintaining his web-site, working on shorts such as Rabbits and the animated Dumbland, adverts for Gucci, music videos for Moby, an exhibition in Paris and a transcendental book called “Catching The Big Fish”, Lynch has kept his fans updated with weather reports and his embracing of Twitter micro-blogging. But, in the way of films, the big-haired auteur’s output has been scant. After re-tooling Mullholland Drive from what was to be a pilot episode for a TV series, the creator of Twin Peaks has...
