Audrey Dalton: Ellen Curry

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Ellen opens her apartment door and meets Anthony on the threshold]  Mrs. Ellen Curry?

    Ellen Curry : Yes.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony, and I think I have a very pleasant surprise for you.

    [Enters the apartment]

Ellen Curry : You've had some news of John?

Michael Anthony : [Embarrassed]  Oh, I'm sorry, Mrs. Curry. No, this isn't about your husband.

Ellen Curry : Please sit down.

[They proceed to the sofa and sit]

Michael Anthony : I heard about your great loss.

Ellen Curry : He's going to come back.

Michael Anthony : I certainly hope so.

Ellen Curry : They never had proof he was dead.

Michael Anthony : I hope they never do.

[Opening his briefcase and pulling out a check]

Michael Anthony : But I've come to give you this. It's a cashier's check for a million dollars.

Ellen Curry : A million dollars?

Michael Anthony : It's a gift, tax-free to you, if you will sign this paper agreeing to the conditions.

Ellen Curry : I never did understand legal phrases.

Michael Anthony : Oh, it says very simply that you agree not to reveal to anyone the circumstances under which you received this money or the exact amount. Your benefactor must be anonymous. And if you do tell anyone, the remainder will be reclaimed.

    [Sadly]

Michael Anthony : You're not allowed to tell anyone except your husband, that is...

Ellen Curry : A million dollars. What this could have meant to John and me.

Michael Anthony : I know that money can never replace the happiness you had. But It can help you forget.

Ellen Curry : I don't understand this, but I don't know how to say thank you for a million dollars either. Thank you, Mr. Anthony.

    [Signs pledge]

Michael Anthony : Good luck, Mrs. Curry.
