- After Tintin & Haddock successfully escape from the Karaboudjan, they now find themselves lost in a desert. After passing out from the long walk through the vast hot sand they were rescued by an army that is stationed at a fort. After receiving water and camels for transportation, Tintin and Haddock head towards the nearest town. While they're there, Haddock discovers that the Karaboudjan is there only under a different name while Tintin discovers that Alan the Skipper who is leader of the crew's drug business is present in town. The only way to stop the mutiny crew is by finding the kingpin of the operations and Alan is Tintin's only link in finding the base of their operations.—J LeGault
- Escaping the ship in a lifeboat in an attempt to reach Spain, they are attacked by a seaplane. The seaplane lands in the sea for confirmation when Tintin manages to upturn the boat, which makes it difficult for the pilot to confirm if they are dead, from the air. Allan orders the pilot to check if they were all dead. Tintin and Haddock hijack the plane and tie up the pilot inside the plane. Tintin had already radioed the police in Bagghar, the next scheduled port of the Karaboujan. Tintin and Haddock fly towards Bagghar, but a storm allows the pilot to escape. The pilot attacks Tintin with a bottle of whiskey and escapes with the only parachute on board. The storm and the lack of an experienced and trained pilot causes them to crash-land in the Sahara.
They have to trek across the hot desert. Haddock is delirious with thirst and mistakes Tintin for a bottle of whiskey and attacks him. They both fall unconscious due to prolonged thirst. Tintin and Haddock reach a Moroccan port, after they are found in the desert by a camel patrol, led by Lt Delcor. Tintin hears news on the radio that Karaboujan sank in the storm and no survivors were found. Haddock is adamant that Karaboujan is a sturdy ship and there is no way that it sank without having time for the crew to launch themselves in lifeboats. Tintin and Haddock travel to the port of Bagghar. During their voyage, the caravan is attacked by bandits, who shoot and destroy Captain's stock of whiskey. Haddock is livid and charges at the bandits like a man possessed. Haddock is lucky as Lt. Delcor was just behind with his armed forces, as he had heard of bandit activity on Tintin's route. The bandits are forced to retreat.
At Bagghar, Tintin and Haddock are separated when Tintin spots Allan and follows him while Haddock gets left behind. Allan notices Tintin following him and manages to evade him. At the port, the Captain recognizes his ship (now renamed the Djebel Amilah) and is kidnapped by members of his old crew.
Tintin only hope is to track Allan down. Tintin finds the Thompsons in Bagghar and brings then up to speed on what he knows. He finds from a local hawker that all crab tins in the town come from the house of Omar Ben Salad. Omar is the wealthiest trader in all of Bagghar. Tintin disguises himself as a beggar on the street where he lost Allan. He finds Allan going down that street again. Tintin follows Allan through a back entry into Omar's wine cellar. Tintin saves the Captain from the house of Omar Ben Salad, where he was being tortured by Allan and his man in Omar's wine cellar.
Thompsons reach the Omar's front door and find Allan escaping through the front. Snowy knocks Omar unconscious, while Tintin follows Allan to the docks. Allan tries to escape in a speedboat, but Tintin manages to lasso him. Kuroki is freed from the holds of the Karaboujan Tintin discovers the necklace with the Crab with the Golden Claws on the now-subdued owner of the wine cellar, Omar Ben Salaad, and realizes that he is the leader of the drug cartel. After capturing Allan, the gang is put behind bars. First time Captain Haddock is revealed in Tintin comics.
