Yesterday we told you that Joe Johnston's Not Safe for Work was going to be headed straight to video. The news came from an interview the La Times did with producer Jason Blum that made things sound kind of grim. Apparently that's not the case at all.
The original comment was as follows: "Some of my movies work, and some of them don't," Blum said. "I want to be able to say to the studio, 'We missed; let's go to VOD.'"
Bloody Disgusting got in touch with Blum, who clarified his remarks. He wasn’t addressing the quality of any film in particular, just whether one of his movies would work as a wide release. Moreover, in the above quote he was talking about his model and preference of options rather than directly addressing any specific movie or the quality of the film. And, for the record, he “thinks it's great.

Simon Boyes and Adam Mason, the pair behind The Devil's Chair and the upcoming Not Safe For Work, will provide the screenplay.
The plot of Equinox has not been officially revealed, but the trade likens the story to a outer space version of Phillip Noye's 1989 thriller Dead Calm.

Long-time FEARnet fave Mortiis is known around the world for his brutal brand of industrial rock, but his skill with dark experimental electronic soundscapes has led to collaborations with horror filmmakers like Adam Mason (Broken, The Devil's Chair), and he's got a couple of horror-themed music videos waiting in the wings to promote his band's upcoming album The Great Deceiver (check out our in-depth interview with Mortiis for more details and some glimpses behind the scenes). During that album's recording sessions, the track “Geisteskrank” was born, and that haunting piece serves as the pulsing black heart of Vardøger, a shocking new short film from controversial Norwegian director Reinert Kiil.
Mortiis describes the collaboration as “sleazy, strange, disturbing, and extremely violent,” with the music “sonically fused” to the unsettling visions, which he believes reveal the filmmaker's personal demons. “I can relate to that, the grit and the decadence. It was a...

Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston got a nice career boost thanks to the success of his WWII superhero movie, but surprisingly Johnston isn't moving right back into the big movie arena with his next project. He's just signed to direct a 'micro-budget' thriller called Not Safe For Work, which is produced by Blumhouse Pictures, which has a first-look deal with Universal. It sounds like quite a departure from making movies on the scale of Captain America, The Wolfman and Jurassic Park III. Adam Mason and Simon Boyes (The Devil's Chair) wrote Not Safe For Work, which THR [1] says is about "a young paralegal who is trapped in the office with a killer on a mission to destroy files for another corporation." This will be by far the smallest movie Johnston has made, with a budget of only $2.5m. It's an interesting choice for him, but the appeal...

Joe Johnston has chosen his followup project to last year's Captain America: The First Avenger and it's Not Safe For Work . The Hollywood Reporter says he'll helm the low-budget thriller for Blumhouse Pictures and Universal. Scripted by Simon Boyes and Adam Mason ( The Devil's Chair , Broken ), the project has a paralegal facing off against a killer from a rival corporation intent on destroying information in his office. To be shot for roughly two-and-a-half million dollars, Not Safe For Work should represent a very different kind of filmmaking than Johnston has shown in the past with films like The Wolfman , Jurassic Park III and Jumanji .

If there's one thing that director Adam Mason (The Devil's Chair, Luster, Pig) is very, very, good at, it's exposing you to the darkest and most violent side of human nature to the point that no matter how hard you try, you just can't look away. If the latest stills from his new film Junkie are any indication of what's to come, it perfectly follows suit.
Believe it or not, even though this is the first time we are hearing about it (Mason is prolific and ultra-sneaky), the film has already wrapped principal photography and is now in post-production.
Long-time Mason collaborator Andrew Howard, Caroline Guivarch, Robert Lasardo, and Daniel Louis Rivas all star in this tale of addicts doing extremely horrific things. Look for more soon if you have the stomach for it.
Check out the stills below courtesy of Twitch Film, and hit up that link for a few more.

It has been a long road for Adam Mason and Luster, his third collaboration with his The Devil's Chair and Blood River star Andrew Howard taking long enough to make its way to completion that the duo actually started and finished a fourth film together - the grueling single take horror picture Pig - while this one was in post production.
Well, now it's done. Or at least very, very close to it - word is the final tweaks to sound mix will be completed next week - which means the film will soon be unleashed upon the world which, in turn, means a new trailer is required.
Thomas Luster is a troubled businessman who tries to make sense of a life being driven out-of-control by a force closer to home than he first realizes. When he discovers that the man working against him is another side of his own...

The quest to discover randomly chosen treasures in the Horror section of Blockbuster began at the store on North Mesa. After sitting through four double features picked from that location, it's time to branch out and see what the Blockbuster on North Resler has to offer. To get things rolling, we have two movies involving a mentally unbalanced person and an evil chair (how many such movies are there, exactly?). The Devil's Chair (2006) A guy takes his girlfriend to an abandoned asylum for a date, where they find a chair that appears to be...

[Adam Mason's Blood River has walked a difficult path from production to release and so, with the film now screening at the Sitges Film Festival, I re-present now the review I wrote for the picture roughly two and a half years ago when it was wrapping up post production.]
Over the past few years we have kept close tabs on British director Adam Mason in these pages, drawn in first by his remarkable ability to manipulate tension and accomplish rather a lot on very tiny budgets, and then further impressed by the remarkable steps forward Mason has been taking from film to film. And fresh off of an appearance by his feature The Devil's Chair in the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto Film Festival that constant striving forward continues with his latest effort, the genre defying Blood River. By far Mason's most cinematic film to date it is also his more personal work and features the most thematically complex script from Mason and writing partner Simon Boyes to date. A simmering study of Old Testament style sin and retribution, Blood River plays like a slow burning Faulkner by way of Deliverance.

[Editor's Note: This was published during the 2010 edition of the Fantastia Int. Film Festival. We are republishing the article to coincide with the theatrical release.] I Spit on Your Grave has two strikes against it right out of the block: one, die hard horror fans are very vocal about their distaste for remakes of their favorite films of yesteryear; and two, the fact that it's a remake of one of the - if not the - most brutal rape revenge films ever made means that even if it's good (it is), the subject matter is way up there on the controversy barometer. So the big question is: did I Spit on Your Grave need to be remade for a 21st century audience? Director Steven Monroe (Wyvern, Storm Cell), a huge fan of the 1978 original (also known as Day of the Woman), seems to have thought not, but made the film out of a sense of necessity: at the pre-screening introduction of the film's world premiere at Fantasia he said that when he saw the rights...

The horror/comedy isn't a tough sell; audiences love to laugh while watching blood spatter and limbs fly through the air. Well, audiences who attend festivals like Fantasia, anyway. The horror part of the equation is easy. It's the comedy part that usually falls flat or is out of balance with the horror elements. Few entries into the canon over the past couple of years come to mind; after Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, there just haven't been very many horror comedies with mass appeal. Until The Revenant, that is. Writer/director Kerry Prior (Roadkill) has come up with a buddy flick that manages to be a touching treatise on frendship while also offering up spot-on social commentary about life in Los Angeles. The fact that one of the buddies is a recently deceased Iraq war veteran who has inexplicably come back from the dead and turned to his...

True story: A couple weeks back I spent a whirlwind couple of days in La for a block of meetings and one of the nights there I was whisked away to a whiskey bar in some part of town where I had never been before. Not even two minutes after walking through the door - literally - my pocket buzzed with a message from a phone number that I didn't recognize. "Todd, are you in La? At a bar in Silver Lake?"
I didn't know. I had to ask. And, yes, that's where I was. And hiding in the back corner of the same bar - completely by random coincidence - were Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, the writer-director duo behind Broken, The Devil's Chair and Blood River and, more importantly, hosts of an on-again, off-again podcast series here at Twitch.

While fans of Broken and The Devil's Chair director Adam Mason have been awaiting the arrival of his dark comedy Luster - a film that has finally completed a lengthy post production only recently - the director himself has been cooking up a little something on the sly.
Together with frequent collaborator Andrew Howard, Mason has completed an entirely different film during the waiting period for Luster. Shot on the cheap and on the sly, with any word kept carefully out of the press until the film was complete Pig is a grueling exercise in single take horror, a savage satire on American gender roles built around a lunatic central performance from Andrew Howard. With the run time dominated by a single 70+ minute take this is something entirely new from Mason, a technical experiment that builds on the themes and approach of his earlier work.
But where to see it?...

Love his work or hate it, you can't deny that British filmmaker Adam Mason ( The Devil's Chair , Blood River ) is at least trying to pull off original horror-thriller fare rather than succumb to remakes and sequels. The man is back with a new feature called Pig , which he shot under the radar with actor Andrew Howard. Twitch describes the film as "a grueling exercise in single take horror, a savage satire on American gender roles built around a lunatic central performance from Andrew Howard. With the run time dominated by a single 70+ minute take this is something entirely new from Mason, a technical experiment that builds on the themes and approach of his earlier work." Interesting. Can you handle non-stop Howard? A film festival premiere is forthcoming, check...

It's been just about a year since we've had any kind of update on Adam Mason's indie thriller Luster, but since one of the stars is The Twilight Saga's Billy Burke, it only makes sense that it would come up during Burke's multiple interviews for the upcoming New Moon.
Burke, who's been plying his trade for years, has become much more of a household name thanks to his portrayal of Charlie Swan (Bella's dad) in the Saga. He recently chatted with MTV and had this to say about Luster:
"I did a film called ‘Luster,’ that was being done by friends of mine, and we threw that one together in 3 to 4 weeks. It’s a psychological thriller. My wife [Pollyanna Rose] is actually in it too," he said with pride. "She plays a crazy movie starlet."
Of special note is that the film features the couple's one-year-old daughter in her movie debut.

- British writer/director Adam Mason's previous films, Broken and The Devil's Chair, have been described as many things, but subtle is not one of them. With Blood River, Mason and regular writing partner Simon Boyes have done a complete one-eighty (well, maybe one-forty) from the brutality and gore of their prior efforts and have delivered a psychological thriller with religious undertones. Clark (Ian Duncan, Creep) and Summer (Tess Panzer, in her first starring role) are a young couple on a road trip through the Nevada desert on their way to tell her parents that Summer is pregnant. When one of their tires has a blowout and the only soul around is a hitchhiker (Andrew Howard, The Devil's Chair) they had rather rudely brushed off earlier, the table is set for an intense tale of sin and retribution that leaves the audience wondering who the true hero of the movie is.

If the name Adam Mason sounds familiar, then congratulations, you're a serious horror fan. While his two best features (Broken and The Devil's Chair) got a fair deal of attention on the festival circuit, Mason has yet to "break out" with a mainstream flick. His next one is a fine thriller called Blood River, plus he's also putting the final touches on another film called Luster. And he's got a few colorful studio projects on the back burner that just might make Mason more of a household name. Well, a horror household name anyway! Last week there were rumblings from the Twitch lab alluding that the core team behind the wildly inventive scifi short, Greenside, were moving into the world of feature filmmaking. Well, not only are they indeed moving into features, but Eric Lim and directors Niko Pueringor and Sam Gorski are doing it in style with an awesome looking scifi/horror hybrid called Infected.
The film tells the story of a group of researchers sent to a remote island where experimental research has unleashed an anamorphic creature with the ability to move quickly from host to host - hence the film’s title - destroying everything in its path.
