Norma and Ed seem to have finally found their happy ending. Nadine, still riding a high from Dr. Amp’s vlog, marches to Big Ed’s gas farm, golden sh-t shovel in hand, and releases Ed from their marriage. She claims to be “better” now. She only wants Ed to be happy. And then, to the sounds of Otis Redding wailing “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” Ed goes to the Double R Diner to take Norma into his arms. Momentary jeopardy arises when Norma must first dispense with Walter and his diner franchise plans. But while he waits,...

Katie Holmes is thinking good thoughts as she uses her gift to impart the wisdom of The Secret.
Katie Holmes is set to headline a feature film adaptation of hit 2006 book The Secret. Rhonda Byrne didn’t just write a self-help book series with her works. She created the law of attraction, which breathed new life into the New Age spiritual movement. The Secret spawned the follow-ups The Power in 2009, The Magic in 2010, and Hero in 2013. Byrne aims to bring joy to the world by helping people control the universe with their minds, using the teachings of Madame Blavatsky and Norman Vincent Peale and a little bit of quantum physics.
The Secret will be directed by Andy Tennant, known for romantic comedies like Sweet Home Alabama and Hitch. The adapted screenplay is being written by Bekah Brunstetter, (NBC’s This Is Us), with help from Tennant and...

From Scientology to self-help, it's been announced that storied actress Katie Holmes will star in a film adaptation of The Secret, the 2006 best-selling self-help book by Rhonda Byrne. Trusting in the kindness of the universe (and a bunch of movie producers and financiers hoping to cash in on the lingering popularity of a decade-old self-help book), Katie Holmes is gearing up to star in a film version of The Secret.
For those poor souls in our audience who don’t maintain an encyclopedic knowledge of everything Oprah has ever told humanity to do, The Secret was a very popular self-help book from the mid-2000s, which basically said that the secret to happiness was to collage all of your hopes and dreams onto a piece of corkboard, and then wait for the universe to manifest you a big ol’ stack of cash. The book—written by Rhonda Byrne—was actually based on a 2006 documentary of the same name, itself based on the more blatantly honest The Science Of Getting Rich.

You may not realize it, but Lara Flynn Boyle’s Donna — the heart of the original series, the activated burgeoning girl detective, my one true love — returned to Twin Peaks Sunday.
Where exactly was she in the show? Well, it’s complicated. First, her face appeared in an old framed photo (of Laura and Donna, from the original series) sitting on a side table in Sarah Palmer’s living room. Then her voice (it was indeed Boyle’s voice) wafted out over the Road House as James Hurley sang his sweet, crazy, retro 50’s ballad “Just You And I” from Season 2. (Yes,...

Katy Tur felt the crowd turn. As Donald Trump scolded the NBC reporter from the stage, calling her “little Katy” because he didn’t like her coverage, the Trump supporters around her began to feel “like a large animal, angry and unchained.” The Secret Service felt the tension too: Agents took the unusual step of escorting her to her car. The December 2015 speech in Mount Pleasant, N.Y. was just a preview of things to come. Since Trump’s election, the attacks on reporters have gotten physical. On Thursday, Republican Greg Gianforte won a Montana congressional election despite being charged...

The book claims that positive thinking can create life-changing results. Also Read: John Oliver Returns to Blast 'Pathological Liar' Donald Trump (Video) “What I’m saying is,...

Tonight, CNN airs the documentary Enlighten Us: The Rise and Fall of James Arthur Ray. The film is a cautionary tale of a narcissistic and charismatic man. Then one film rocketed him to Oprah Winfrey’s orbit: The Secret. DaguerrotypeDear Fern,I've heard a lot of mixed things here about Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time, so I'm very pleased at your enraptured praise. Did you know from the first moment that you liked it so much? Sometimes, in those rare special occasions, you know right off that a film is great. From the first shot of Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women, a grainy Montana landscape grayed by winter, with hills so soft in they could be painted on, and a train arcing its way towards the camera, it is clear this film is special. Based on stories by author Maile Meloy, the film takes the unusual form of a sequence of three stories, all set in small town Montana, and each foregrounded on a woman and her conflicted yearning.Laura Dern is a lawyer whose client (Jared Harris) in a dead-end malfeasance lawsuit gets increasingly dejected and unhinged...

Editor’s Note: I met Sean Williams at Comic-Con’s Hall H between panels on the first day of the Con this past July, chatting as people do. It turns out that Sean is a filmmaker, and he’s working on a sci-fi project – travel to another planet! strong women! – that sounds really great.
Last week Sean let me know that he was ready to start “officially” talking about the project, and wanted to know what I’d like to know. I told him I wanted to know, basically, everything. How the project got started, who’s involved, where he is in the process, etc. What follows is the narrative he wrote up on the spot on his phone and sent to me via Facebook Messenger in response. One long narrative that was completely engaging. He even copied and inserted biographies as he went along. It’s no wonder the man has won writing awards.

The Bling Ring
Written and Directed by Sofia Coppola
USA, 2013
Her career was born in the excesses of the 1990s and Sofia Coppola’s career trajectory has brought her through one of the worst economic crisis’ in recent history and a period of social seriousness that she seems quite frankly out of step with. In spite of this, she has found popularity (mixed in with good doses of controversy) for taking the passive “villains” of this era and making their vapidity interesting and their environment of excess reason for victimhood. Her characters often lack a sense of autonomy and are ultimately trapped by their beauty and youth in a hazy state of ennui. Based on true events, her newest film The Bling Ring features perhaps her most active characters and perhaps unintentionally, her most vapid as well.

Returning for its fourth edition this year is the ‘City to City’ programme, which puts a spotlight on filmmakers working and living in a certain city, introducing audiences to local independent films from around the world. This year’s city of choice is Mumbai.

In terms of documentary film servings in the fall (pre Idfa in November), in the hands of Thom Powers, Tiff’s former Real to Reel section now simply known as Tiff Docs is the equivalent to riding the gravy train. To be housed at the new spanking brand new Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, this year’s docu items included such names/titles as Ken Burns and what looks to be the Telluride preemed The Central Park Five, Julien Temple’s London – The Modern Babylon, Marina Zenovich’s sequel Roman Polanski: Odd Man Out, another hot topic subject for Alex Gibney with Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God and an exec produced item from Errol Morris with Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing side by side with with the latest from Crossing the Line helmer Daniel Gordon (9.79*) and Operation Filmmaker helmer Nina Davenport (First Comes Love). Accusations that Greg Mortenson lied about his past and abused charity funds are hitting his hometown hard-and also taking their toll on Mortenson. The Daily Beast visits remote Bozeman, Montana, and finds:
• The Secret Service paid a visit to Bozeman, Montana, recently to ask questions about Mortenson.

• The recent allegations are taking a toll on Mortenson. Police were recently called to his home, and a source at the local hospital says he checked in "to get out of the pressure."
• Cai initially hired Burson-Marsteller to handle the publicity surrounding the 60 Minutes report-and Karen Hughes, the former top aide to George W. Bush, was the point person.
• Mortenson underwent open-heart surgery on Friday, according to a spokeswoman.
Nothing was stolen, and the doors of the SUV were still locked. But the back windshield of my rental car had been smashed to bits.

After attending many courses led by self-help guru James Arthur Ray, Dennis Mehraver says he developed great trust in his mentor and came to believe that Ray "knew how far I could go better than myself." But as Mehraver and others struggled to remain conscious in the stifling heat of a sweat lodge during a retreat with Ray in 2009, their leader did nothing to stop the ceremony or to check on their well-being, Mehraver says. Mehraver's last memory was an urge to flee, and when he finally came to after passing out, a smiling Ray was sitting in a chair and saying,...

Books: They’re just like movies, only without CGI.
So it’s no wonder that over the past century, Hollywood has consistently turned to books to provide the basis for some of its best works. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” for instance, was based on a book, while “Gigli” wasn’t. See how that works?
With that in mind, then, we decided to put together a sneak peak of all the coolest books currently being turned into major motion pictures (like “The Help,” left). Because these days, the best library you can go to is your local Cineplex.

There would be more than 19,000,000 and counting of those minutes given that is the number of copies of The Secret that have been sold to date. And that doesn't include collateral minutes born of purchases of her CDs, DVDs, wall calendars, key rings, and assorted other inspirational tchotchkes available for sale. Plus, her new book, The Power, is now number one on the New York Times advice bestseller list, so there are many more minutes ahead for many more suckers to be born. After reading a recent New York Times essay about these two books authored by Rhonda Byrne, I got to thinking about what makes her messages so compelling and why so many believe her ideas even though they seem so implausible as to be laughable. Ms. Byrne's basic premise is that people can get what they want in...

'The Good Guys' (9Pm, Fox)
Until Tom Selleck returns to primetime next season on CBS' cop drama 'Blue Bloods,' we have to give it up to Bradley Whitford's 'Good Guys' moustache for the Best Supporting Performance by Facial Hair in a Drama Series. Really, look at that thing ... it's truly Selleck-worthy. Meanwhile, there's much to love elsewhere about this quirky new series (which actually falls more in the dramedy category), concocted by 'Burn Notice' creator Matt Nix. Whitford's Dan Stark was once a great cop ... in the '80s, a decade he can't seem to let go of, from the 'stache and his wardrobe to his drinking and his love of his Trans Am. But now he's partnered up with the by-the-book Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks), who embraces modern police techniques and desperately wants a promotion. Jack's more,...

Unless you’ve been living in a cave somewhere, you know that this Sunday, envelopes will be opened, names will be announced, and Oscar statuettes will be handed out! There’ll be cheer; there’ll be tears; there’ll even be anger and frustration – and all before the first award is even given
So, who’s going to win what? Will there be any surprises, or have previous awards shows already made sure that there aren’t any? Tune in on Sunday night to find out, like everybody else!
However, we can certainly have some fun with it all, and give our choices for whom we think will win each award; and I’m going to do just that – at least in the major categories – Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture. I’ll also give my spoiler picks for each.

Self-help guru James Arthur Ray was arrested Wednesday in Arizona on manslaughter charges in the deaths of three people during a sweat lodge ceremony. Ray was being held on $5 million bond at a sheriff's station in Prescott awaiting transfer to the Camp Verde Detention Center, according to a statement by Yavapai County Sheriff Steve Waugh. As I expected, there are really no big surprises. The names and titles that have been nominated in previous awards events (like the Golden Globes, SAG, DGA, Critics, etc) have pretty much carried over.
Maybe the surprises will come when the trophies are eventually handed out on March 7th.
Of note, Precious received nominations in almost every major category – Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Now if only there were 2 prominent roles for men in the film, it just may have been nodded in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor
Morgan Freeman received a Best Actor nomination for his role in Invictus, and The Princess & The Frog is nommed in the Best Animated Feature category.
Lee Daniels, by the way, becomes only the second African American to be nominated in the Best Director category. Can you name who was the first (and no,...

Coming off the holiday weekend, Fox continues to lead the summer as the top-rated network, while CBS leads among total viewers and is the only network to post gains versus the same week last year.
Fox (4.2 million viewers, 1.5 average rating in the key adults 18-49 demographic) led the week in the demo, followed by CBS (6.9 million, 1.4), NBC (5.4 million, 1.4) and ABC (3.7 million, 1.1.).
NBC's "America's Got Talent" (13.1 million, 3.7) took the lead Tuesday as the top-rated show, hitting a season high, followed by Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" (7.7 million, 3.0) on Wednesday.
CBS continued to keep pace with competitors while airing mainly repeats. Although "Got Talent" continues to perform, Wednesday's new drama, NBC's "The Philanthropist" (5.7 million, 1.4), fell from its premiere, and Thursday's "The Listener" (3.3 million, 0.9) on CBS continued to struggle.
ABC matched its all-time low adult-demo weekly number even as "The Bachelorette" (7.9 million, 2.7) hit a summer high; on Monday's episode, it slipped from that number.

Lululemon has created a cult following for its yoga gear. Its secret? The Secret, as well as other controversial self-help classics.
I'm balancing on my head, and I don't think I've ever been more relaxed. I am one of about 30 women who have assumed similarly vertical positions early on a Sunday morning in a yoga studio on New York's Upper East Side. Tibetan chants and dimmed lights block out the city's chaos just beyond the door. Motivational quotes painted on the walls -- jealousy works the opposite way you want it to! -- seep into my consciousness.
Seconds after our petite Indian yogi leads us through our final "ommm," piercing lights flicker on. People roll in tables of merchandise like stagehands between acts of a play, converting our urban ashram into a retail temple. The women gathered at Lululemon Athletica -- the Mecca of yoga lifestyle gear -- know the drill.

Drew Heriot, whose documentary-style DVD The Secret has garnered a cult following and sold more than 2 million copies, will make his feature film directorial debut with the spiritual fantasy/adventure The Aquarian Gospel.
The story, based on Jesus Christ's missing years as a young man in the Bible, revolves around his journeys from Israel to India, Tibet, Persia, Greece and Egypt and the encounters he has with people of various backgrounds along the way.
John F. Sullivan and William Sees Keenan (Poor Things) penned the script, which was inspired by Levi Dowling's "The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ," Nicholas Notovitch's "The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ" and from what Sullivan and Keenan describe as "the lost gospels that shed light on Jesus' secret teachings predating the four canonized Gospels."
Keenan is set to produce the $15 million film, which he said will be shot in the U.S. in a stylized high-definition format. Thaddeus Carlson is co-executive producing.
"I literally felt goose bumps when Will told me this story, and knew immediately it was my next project," Heriot said.
