I was lucky enough to check out a screening of Moore's latest film at the Toronto International Film Festival. Though Moore usually stars in his films, this is the first time that the bulk of the film is about him. It's about his quest and struggle leading up to the 2004 presidential election to inform Americans about the importance to vote and the reasons not to vote Republican. We know from the start it has a tragic ending as Bush was re-elected, but the magic of the film lays in Moore's efforts.
Through his films Moore has become a key political figure who fights for a better quality of life that cannot be bought. He has shined light on issues such as the flaws of the corporate structure, the harm of guns in society, the corruptness of the Bush administration, and the failure of health care in American. Personally I have trouble seeing how a person with common sense and the slightest bit of morality can be against what Moore fights for but unfortunately many people are against him and that is actually what this film is about. We see his attempts to fight back against the confused and misinformed whether it's the media calling his work propaganda, a Christian Youth group praying during one of Moore's rally's as though they were in depths of hell, or just ignorant people bashing Moore for his views without having even watched his films. In every instance he cleverly strips down each of these attacks to show not only is there no logic behind what they are saying, but through the rationally of what he says in response why they are in the wrong.
This film ultimately works as fight against those who are against Moore and his quest to better the world. There are very powerful scenes in this film that I don't want to spoil but Moore's respect for the troops and his lover for his country becomes very clear in this film. It wasn't till the Q and A after the film where I learned attempts were made on Moore's life during the tour that didn't make it in the film. That is when I realized Moore wasn't trying to paint himself as a hero but rather just get his message across, which sadly for the film is the real proof that Moore is a 100% authentic and a true hero.
In my opinion the major flaw of this film is actually that Moore doesn't accept it became a story of why he has become a champion for all of humanity at a very scary and crucial point in time and instead revolves more around the 2004 election, which is no longer relevant. What is relevant and important is Moore himself and what he has to say and how he has gone about fighting for what he believes in. Had Martin Luther King Jr. made a film documenting him self delivering speeches and his struggle to get his message out, it would be on par with this film. I can only hope this film will still carry the same impact when Moore isn't sitting in the theater.
I must add that being someone who didn't consider myself a big fan of Moore and just went along with a friend, I honestly felt for the first time ever that I was in the presence of a great man. The standing ovation and roar of applause carried on through the entire credits and even minutes after until he humbly got on stage and waved for people to stop.
