After Addams Family Values struggled at the box office, another film still followed a few years later. But Addams Family 3 this was not...
Were the world right, then in 1993, Addams Family Values would have got both the rich acclaim and enormous box office it merited. A deliciously playful sequel, it’s 94 minutes of tightly put together comedy, with a bunch of performers that come close to defining ‘perfectly cast’. Christina Ricci, clinging to a fence as she’s threatened with the Harmony Hut, remains a comedy highlight of 1990s cinema.
But the film didn’t really hit. As much as it was liked, its box office was less than half of the original. It was released the week before Mrs Doubtfire in the Us, and it was the latter that become the widely seen family comedy of Christmas 1993. Addams Family Values would do okay at best, but...

That remake of the 1983 gaming geek classic WarGames Hollywood have been trying to crack for the past few years is getting a new make over in the form of script writer Noah Oppenheim. The Hollywood Reporter says Oppenheim will write the movie that Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon was assigned to in June.
Not much is known about Oppenheim as yet and without a finished production credit to his name he is one of the most untested screenwriters in Hollywood. He’s currently working on two films, The Maze Runner, and another called The Secret Life of Houdini, but they won’t be hitting the screen until 2013 and 2014, respectively, at least according to IMDb.
In particular his Houdini movie must now be in question as Water For Elephants director Francis Lawrence is working with Rise of the Planet of the Apes writer Scott Frank on their own Houdini movie which...

Who doesn't love War Games? Communists and pedophiles, that's who. It's a ridiculously badly dated piece of 80's candy. Matthew Broderick was utterly adorable (although, that hasn't really changed), as was Ally Sheedy. It had an ominous undertone, a strange, faceless enemy that seemed viable at the time, and for fuck's sake, nuclear war is averted via a games of Tic Tac Toe, resulting in an insane supercomputer understanding the concept of hopelessness and deciding to play chess instead. It sounds stupid. It is stupid. And if you speak ill of War Games, I will hit your mother with a shovel, then jam the shovel up your ass.
It's been revisited before, most recently in the wretched, abominable WarGames: The Dead Code, which is 90 minutes of my life I'd like to scour from my brain with industrial chemicals, or maybe just Irish whiskey.

Seth Gordon, director of the fantastic documentary The King of Kong and the upcoming Horrible Bosses, is set to remake 1983’s WarGames for MGM.
Deadline reports Gordon will be given a “wide berth for a new take” the original, which starred Matthew Broderick as a computer whiz-kid who nearly starts World War III by playing a game with a military computer program. The studio released a direct-to-dvd sequel in 2008 titled WarGames: The Dead Code, which still never explained why there is an easily accessible “game” capable of starting a nuclear holocaust.
Since emerging from bankruptcy and nearly $4 billion in debt, MGM has been raiding its own vault for dusty brands to revive and revisit. The Hobbit was the first, a no-brainer, followed by a greenlight for Bond 23 with Daniel Craig back in action. They also have their hearts (and bottom lines) set on a reboot of RoboCop, which once...

Looks like another '80s property is being dug up and dusted off over at MGM this week as they are reportedly in the early stages of putting together a remake of the 1983 thriller WarGames. The original film starred Matthew Broderick as a computer whiz kid who hacks into a military computer and plays games against it, only to find out that he is actually on the verge of starting World War III. The director that they have chosen to reboot the franchise is an interesting one, although I'm still not entirely convinced that this a good idea. According to Deadline [1], Seth Gordon (The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters) has landed the gig although it's not clear if this will be his next project or not. A couple of years ago, MGM put together a direct-to-video sequel to WarGames called WarGames: The Dead Code, and while I haven't seen it,...

How would a new version of WarGames work in the age of Anonymous [1] and LulzSec [2]? The original film was released in 1983, when hacking was, to most people, almost a sci-fi concept. So when Matthew Broderick played a kid who hacked into a government installation and almost started Wwiii through what he thought was an innocent game of chess with a supercomputer, the movie earned a response more due to paranoid fears of political instability and technological dependence than because anyone really thought that a kid would hack the machine brain of the defense department. But now we're nearing a time when most people will have felt the effect of malicious hacking, whether through identity theft, phishing scams or the exposure of personal data (or, again, paranoid fear of it) thanks to something like the LulzSec attacks against Sony. That means that it is a particularly good time to reboot WarGames,...

Seth Gordon has become attached to a big-screen remake of the 1983 John Badham film WarGames , Deadline reports. The original film starred Matthew Broderick as a young computer genius who hacks into a government system and, thinking it all a game, accidentally initiates a computerized countdown to a nuclear weapons launch. Gordon, no stranger to video games, is still best known for his documentary King of Kong . He subsequently helmed the romantic comedy Four Christmases and directed the upcoming Horrible Bosses at Warner Bros. An MGM film, WarGames received a direct-to-dvd sequel in 2006 with WarGames: The Dead Code .

This week in theaters, Tom Hanks plays a Harvard professor working against the clock to save the fate of the Roman Catholic Church in “Angels & Demons.” When the Pope and his successor candidates begin dropping like flies, the chances of his success start dwindling along with them. A conniving underground society like the Illuminati is always a great way to keep the tension going in the face of a high-stakes doomsday scenario like the destruction of Catholicism. Here are five more time-bomb scenarios that play out with maximum drama on film, earning each of them a spot on the watch list of the MTV Movies Blog.
“WarGames” (1983)
Full-scale thermonuclear war is the doomsday event in the doorway for most of this classic computer-game flick starring a young Matthew Broderick. The kid genius thinks he’s just playing a game when it turns out he’s actually hacked into a government...

It's about time. Jeez, WarGames has been dying for a remake for at least half a decade. The original, released in 1983, is just so outdated but the potential is an absolute goldmine.
Now, Leonardo DiCaprio has apparently stepped up to produce the remake through his bourgeoning Appian Way production company. Production Weekly reported the story, offering very few details. We can tell you that this is probably not at all connected to the direct-to-dvd sequel Wargames: The Dead Code, and we should all be thankful for that, according to the reviews.

Production Weekly has come out with an interesting tidbit about "WarGames". Through its Twitter feed, the trade breaks out that Leonardo DiCaprio is looking forward to work with MGM in producing a remake to the John Badham-directed 1983 sci-fi hacker film.
Aside from the possibility of the 34-year-old actor producing the reboot with MGM, no other detail about the proposed feature film project has been shared by Production Weekly. Meanwhile, both MGM and DiCaprio have yet to release any statement regarding this report.
The original "WarGames" is written by Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes. Starring Matthew Broderick as the lead actor, it tells the story of a young hacker and his effort to prevent a super intelligent military computer from causing World War III. Collecting over $74 million after five months in the U.S., the film also received three Oscars nominations.

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Paramount Blu-ray Extravaganza! Thanks to Comic Con my Blu-ray watching abilities were basically destroyed. I came home to several new Blu-ray discs that arrived in the time I was away and out of all of them eight of them hit the shelves today. Six of them I am going to detail here as they are catalog titles. The others I will get to in a second. The first one was Top Gun of which I reviewed on HD DVD (review here) and was not very kind to considering the HD DVD edition contained none of the features from the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD. Well, I am happy to say the Blu-ray comes with all the goodies (documentaries, music videos, commentaries, etc.) that I loved from the DVD. On top of that... included is a DTS soundtrack, a Huge step up from the HD DVD Dolby DigitalPlus.
