This show ran on ABC during the 1960-61 season and on NBC during the 1961-1962 season. Jack Spear, in addition to being the producer and director, played Pip, a flutist who was related to both Peter Pan and The Pied Piper. As such, Pip had special talents: he could fly when needed (and in fact, the beginning of every show had him coming down from the skies on a cloud). He could lure friendly animals with his flute; then he would communicate with them. Wife and co-producer Phyllis Spear played Miss Merry Note, and Lucien Kaminsky, who wrote most of the song arrangements, played Mister Leader and wore a band leader's uniform. The three of them, plus a few animal puppets and an occasional guest, were the cast and crew of the show.
The show was done simply and tastefully, without any frills. The idea of each story was to teach children right from wrong, and to do so in an entertaining way that kept the kids' attention. At the end of each show, Pip would sing a song that reinforced right and wrong. The show would seem corny by today's standards, but it was anything but corny to the audience of that day, and during its half-hour Saturday morning time slot it surely entertained and charmed the kids who watched it, while helping teach them a lesson about taking the right path in life.
