Jim Beaver has been all over our TV screens lately, and we're loving it. Following his surprise return to "Supernatural" this week and his critically-lauded arc on Season 4 of "Justified," the beloved character actor is visiting ABC's "The Middle" on April 10.
Beaver will play Brick's (Atticus Shaffer) "not-so-trustworthy" Scout Master Mr. Stokes, who apparently has a fairly relaxed policy about letting his charges play with knives and axes.
In The Huffington Post's exclusive clip above -- which has echoes of Beaver's fan-favorite "Supernatural" character, Bobby Singer -- Mr. Stokes proves reluctant to divulge the "classified" location of the group's expedition into the woods, much to Mike's (Neil Flynn) chagrin.
As if Beaver's appearance wasn't enough casting candy, "30 Rock's" Jack McBrayer also makes an appearance in the episode, playing Dr. Goodwin, a potential employer for matriarch Frankie (Patricia Heaton).
Check out the official description for the April 10th episode of "The Middle" below.

It’ll be a case of “hello grey sky, goodbye blue” for Atticus Shaffer’s Brick Heck during The Middle‘s Season 4 finale.
Happy Days vet Marion Ross has been cast in the season finale of ABC’s Wednesday-night comedy as the vice principal of Brick’s elementary school — and yes, she’ll be having a run-in with the Heck family’s idiosyncratic youngest child.

Some of Ross’ most recent primetime appearances have come in episodes of Up All Night, Childrens Hospital, Grey’s Anatomy and Brothers & Sisters.

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage. Modern Family is such a hit for ABC that entertainment president Paul Lee just referred to it as simply “Modern” during a morning TCA panel. Everyone on the planet would know what show he meant. But if ratings are any indication, the TV viewership is not on such a first-name basis with another ABC Wednesday night comedy, The Middle. At today’s late afternoon panel on the show, executive producers DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler joked that they were going to go to a bar and have a drink for every time a TV critic calls the show “underrated.” Related: ‘Body Of Proof’ Producers On Season 3 Changes: TCA Still, the producers and cast members who attended the panel (Eden Sher, Atticus Shaffer, Neil Flynn and Patricia Heaton), said they are pretty satisfied with the show’s 8 Pm time slot and the...

The cast and creators of The Middle don’t mind being called "underappreciated” or “underrated” or any of the other kind adjectives critics apply to the ABC comedy that has been mostly ignored by Emmy voters and gets a fraction of the fawning media attention of the network’s breakout hit Modern Family. Photos: Overheard at TCA: Sound Bites From TV's Winter Press Tour “We thought in the writers room we would have a drink every time a critic says 'underrated,'” said Middle executive producer DeAnn Heline. “Obviously, it would be great to have even more awards or more recognition,”

Always one to champion the little guy or gal, theTVaddict.com wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that The Middle — also known as one of the small screen’s most delightful gems — returns tonight with a brand new episode. And here to preview that very episode, as well as delve a little bit more into the show is none other than series star Patricia Heaton. See for yourself, after the jump.
Reflecting on four years of The Middle are you surprised this little comedy that could has done so well for itself amidst an increasingly competitive television landscape?
Patricia Heaton: Well you know, when I first read the script, I saw great writing, great characters and great potential, but in television you never know! I don’t think a lot of fans realize that the show was done before as a pilot with a different cast [Editor's Note: Ricki Lake played Heaton's role in the original pilot]. But...

Question: I appreciate how you are one of the few critics who recognizes how good a family sitcom The Middle is. I'm not American, but I can so relate to the Heck family, and they really hit it right out of the park with the family dynamics. Frankie and Mike's 20th anniversary was another terrific episode, and I want to give kudos to Atticus Shaffer's performance when Brick told Axl why books are so important. Strong words that captured a lot from the joys of reading to getting to know the struggles of a kid who's socially inept. I'm happy this show lasted this long and will reach 100 episodes by next season. Now that the show has enough episodes for syndication, do you think The Middle has a chance to grow even more in the ratings?...

Frankenweenie
Directed by: Tim Burton
Cast: Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Winona Ryder
Running Time: 1 hr 17 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: October 5, 2012
Plot: Inspired by his science teacher, a boy brings his dog back to life.
Who’S It For? Kids and any parents and adults who look back on classic horror movies fondly.
Expectations: I’m taking a stand against expectations and go into movies blank these days. It saves me from feeling like Hollywood punched me in the face.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, and Charlie Tahan as, respectively, Mrs. Frankenstien, Mr. Frankenstien, and Victor Frankenstien: The dialogue is colorless and to the point. It adds no flavor to the film; it only furthers the plot or introduces us to characters. But that’s not why we’re here to see this movie: we are here for the incredible stop motion animation.

With much of the Alphabet Network’s focus, not to mention marketing budget, reserved for this week’s splashy September launch, The Middle — or as it’s better known around theTVaddict.com as “the little comedy that could” — once again is forced to rely on one of its top secret weapons to promote tonight’s hour long premiere. Namely, the ridiculously well-spoken Atticus Shaffer, who was only too happy to spend some time previewing tonight’s season opener, what changes are in store for Brick and which ABC series he’d most like to crossover to.
With The Middle heading into its fourth season, is playing Brick still as exciting as it was when you first started?
Atticus Shaffer: It’s actually more of a middle ground, no pun intend! Certain parts, like the first part of the season are exciting because we’re back again which is awesome,...

In May, ABC’s The Middle ended with a wedding, when Rusty (Norm Macdonald) haphazardly got hitched at the Heck home. Frankie (Patricia Heaton) went out of her way to try to make the day nice, but — as tends to happen to the Hecks — everything went to crap. And that — yes, crap! — tends to be a theme for the family sitcom, which will find itself mired in quite a lot more of the stuff this coming season.

Those familiar with ABC's family-focused comedy The Middle may recognize a familiar voice among the cast of Tim Burton's upcoming 3D stop motion-animated comedy horror Frankenweenie. Two clips have arrived online which give us a look at the character voiced by young Atticus Shaffer, who's likely best known for his role as the youngest Heck, Brick, in The Middle. Inspired by Frankenstein, Tim Burton's Frankenweenie follows young Victor (Charlie Tahan), a boy who loses his dog Sparky and uses the power of science to bring him back to life. It seems that miracle was something he was hoping to keep a secret, because he doesn't seem very thrilled in the clip below, which has Shaffer's Edgar revealing that he knows about the dog. Edgar appears to be a troublesome little Igor-ish guy (in need of some serious dental work). The next clip, which comes courtesy of iTunes, has...

Herewith, some outtakes from those interviews, in which these women talk about their comedy icons, whether ratings matter, and getting flack on the Internet.Overnight ratings seem to be increasingly out-of-date with measuring how people watch TV, and yet they're the ones that get reported widely. Is the whole modern ratings system just a mess? Emily Spivey: Yeah, it’s very confusing. With my show, most of the viewers are DVRing it. Even my own parents are like, “We DVRed it! We’re watching it!” It’s a little frustrating.

Terry O'Quinn as Gavin Doran in "666 Park Avenue" (ABC/Andrew Eccles)
ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
It’s tricky to get a solid feel...

"iCarly" (2007- ): The first situation comedy to use the Web and interact with viewers, features a Web show within it and has allowed the kids to grow up, but not too much. Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) has a genuine sweetness; her best friends, bad girl Sam and nerdy Freddie (Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Kress), put on the Web series with her. Carly's older brother, Spencer (Jerry Trainor), is her wacky guardian, as their parents are in the military.
"The Middle" (2009- ): If you're looking for a comedy to watch with your kids, this is it. Patricia Heaton is fearless as Frankie, who takes two-second "showers" in the kitchen sink to rinse her underarms and colors her gray roots with marker. Neil Flynn is her perfect match as her loving husband, Mike. Axl (Charlie McDermott), the son who seems to only eat, sleep and grunt, is solid. But the two younger kids get the funniest situations.

Shows that exemplify the “everyman” don’t come around that often. But one wonderful and warm exception is ABC’s comedy series The Middle. Rather than depict a super-human family genetically engineered to accomplish their life’s bliss, The Middle recognizes and celebrates the kind of family that most of us probably have – one where money is tight, the children are a shade off from “normal,” and yet everyone undeniably loves each other through the thick-and-thin — and more often than not, finds a way to make lemonade when handed a basket of lemons. In fact, The Middle seeks to cherish and commemorate what makes being a family a special joy in today’s world of everyday stress, pressure and worries.
At a special event in its honor at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, key cast members of The Middle stopped to chat about their family-friendly show.

First up, Michael Weatherly from NCIS gives me a little scoop about Jimmy’s bachelor party (and possible best man choice!), then Atticus Shaffer from The Middle answers a clairvoyant reader’s question, and last, Tim DeKay talks about the White Collar finale. And guess what, folks? It all happens under three minutes! That’s, like, a microwave burrito. You can spare that.
Now, check it out below. And if not for all that goodness,...

Much like many of his beloved small screen alter egos, actor Neil Flynn is a man of few words. Thankfully for fans of the talented comedian — who famously turned a one episode guest spot on Scrubs into eight seasons of hilarious janitorial hi-jinx — what Flynn lacks in verboseness he more than makes up for by choosing his words wisely. Or at least that’s the distinct impression we were left with following a brief one-on-one chat with the actor who can currently be seen each and every Wednesday night at 8Pm playing Mike Heck in the hit ABC comedy The Middle. See for yourself, after the jump.
After 9 years spent working with Zach Braff and Donald Faison was it a challenging transition to work on a comedy with such “adult” actors like Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer?

Tonight’s Valentine’s Day-themed episode of The Middle appropriately tackles the meaning of love. (All together now, “Awwww.”)
And when 13-year-old star Atticus Shaffer stopped by EW’s offices this week, he raved about the current love in his life: Stop-motion animation. In fact, he was nice enough to show us his talent by putting together an exclusive display of his skills. (And it was no small feat; it took him three days in between a crazy shooting schedule!)
So check out Lego Brick and his impressions below.

There may be sitcoms that are flashier, edgier or more ironic than The Middle, but you'd be hard-pressed to find any that are funnier. Since premiering in 2009, ABC's hit comedy about the Hecks, a working-class Midwestern family of misfits, has proven that it doesn't take a right- or left-coast sensibility to produce laughter — thanks in no small part to the performances of Charlie McDermott (Axl), 21, Eden Sher (Sue), 20, and Atticus Shaffer (Brick), 13. TV Guide Magazine played hooky with the trio for an afternoon of mini-golf at Castle Park in Sherman Oaks to find out if they're equally entertaining off duty.

ABC had a strong showing on its television schedule this fall with new hits like Revenge, Once Upon A Time and Suburgatory, but they also had their share of missteps with Charlie’s Angels and Pan Am, which is bound for the cancellation block. However, the new offerings this spring such as Gcb, the sitcom Don’t Trust The B---- in Apartment 23, and heavier dramas The River and Shonda Rhimes’ new series Scandal.

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s coverage of TCA. Do shows like Don’t Trust the B— In Apartment 23, CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and the Fox series New Girl mean we’re in some kind of women’s renaissance in network TV? At this morning’s TCA session on Apartment 23, creator/executive producer Nahnatchka Khan concluded, well, maybe. But in an afternoon panel featuring producers from ABC’s successful Wednesday night comedy block, the female showrunners of The Middle, Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, pointed out that they’ve been funny for some time now — behind the scenes. “It’s exciting, but we always thought women had funny things to say,” said Heisler. “I think Tina Fey — and us — poked a little hole that allowed for this. We’ve been doing it for a while, and we’re glad to have company.” The Middle is a family show, not a...

You know the sound that's made as a coyote is eating a cat? That’s the noise that comes to mind when Modern Family creator Steve Levitan hears a multi-camera laugh track. “I just can’t take it any more,” says the producer of a staple of multi-cam shows, a genre that he's thrilled to have moved away from with his latest comedy. The outburst came Tuesday during a panel with ABC’s other single-camera showrunners, including Suburgatory’s Emily Kapneck, Happy Endings’ David Caspe and Jonathan Groff and The Middle’s Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. Officially speaking, it was Instant Dance Hour on Dancing With the Stars, but it might as well have been known as Night of 1,000 Nicknames. Len re-dubbed Ricki Lake as Ricki River. Hope Solo wanted to be known as “just a girl.” And Tom Bergeron referred to Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus as “The Bickersons.”
Still, competitively speaking, it was J.R. Martinez who snagged the title of “potential champion” with a perfect score of 60 over two dances, and Nancy who got a “sacrificial lamb” stamp on her forehead. Whether or not those roles will stick, however, remains to be seen.

At just around 10 million viewers per episode this season, ABC’s The Middle is certainly one of the network’s most quiet hits.
But docile as fans of show might be (it doesn’t blow up Twitter during every episode), the show’s youngest star, Atticus Shaffer, says that doesn’t mean the comedy’s blue collar, heart-filled humor doesn’t hit close to home for many. “It’s something kids and adults can relate to because it is so real,” he says. “People can relate to being tight on money and then the dryer just got destroyed or the dishwasher just exploded.

When your parents name you after a character in To a Kill a Mockingbird, a passion for reading probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. What should come as a surprise though is that Atticus Shaffer’s love of the printed word is partially responsible for where he finds himself today, playing Brick Heck, the hilarious youngest child on The Middle. We recently had the pleasure of catching up with the incredibly well-spoken young actor to find out what he’s reading now, which big-time movie star he’d next like to see play his teacher, and the fringe benefits that come with being one of the break-out stars of a hit ABC series.

While he was a mere high school student when we last saw him on screen as "Glee's" Sam Evans, Chord Overstreet returns to prime-time Wednesday (Sept. 28) evening on "The Middle" as an elementary school teacher. Talk about range.
Overstreet guest stars as Mr. Wilkerson, Brick's (Atticus Shaffer) teacher -- a teacher whose new age-y teaching philosophy (there's an "answer ball" involved) doesn't fly with Brick's dad, Mike (Neil Flynn).
Oh, and if you're having trouble recognizing old Trouty Mouth, he's rocking his natural sandy-brown hair color.

Fallout from The L Word's Leisha Hailey being escorted from a Southwest Airlines flight continues. Southwest released a statement saying their investigation had revealed numerous complaints that Hailey's affection was "excessive." I used to fly a lot, and I mean a lot, and I've seen people join the Mile High Club in the cabin, so this must have been amazing. Interesting complication: Southwest is the official airline of GLAAD.

If you’re a fan of ABC’s darling sitcom The Middle, you know exactly what the “Brick whisper” is. It’s almost too hard to explain unless you watch, but basically, it’s a weird tick from eccentric character Brick (Atticus Shaffer), who puts his head down and repeats the last words he’s said in a creepy whisper. It sounds weird, but it’s truly funny on screen.

Some people refer to “The Middle” as “Modern Family’s” less attractive cousin. You know, the one that doesn’t win all of the awards, gets significantly less attention but is actually the funnier of the two?

Turns out, not everybody loves Raymond. Or at least The Middle's Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton) doesn't.

Glee’s Chord Overstreet has fast-tracked through graduation as he moves from McKinley High as a student to Orson Elementary as a teacher for a guest spot on Season 3 of ABC’s family comedy, The Middle.
Overstreet will be appearing on the September 28th episode of The Middle as Ralph Wilkerson, a new fourth grade teacher that has Brick (Atticus Shaffer) in his class. This in itself might not be a bad thing, but EW.com reveals that Wilkerson’s “innovative and involved teaching methods run counter to the more relaxed parenting style used by the boy’s parents.”
