- Bill Buchanan: [Over the phone] we just got word from the field teams at your brother's house: Graem's dead
- Jack Bauer: What happened?
- Bill Buchanan: We'll know more after an autopsy. All signs point to cardiac arrest
- Jack Bauer: Because of the interrogation?
- Bill Buchanan: The medic on site believes that was the factor
- Jack Bauer: My father knows?
- Bill Buchanan: Yes, he was there. But your sister in law and nephew were already on their way to CTU when it happened
- Jack Bauer: I'd really appreciate it if you can break the news to them
- Bill Buchanan: Of course
- Reed Pollock: [Talking privately] what happened?
- Tom Lennox: The President just rejected everyone of my proposals right there in front of the Cabinet: not only he changed his mind on the internment plan, he is rolling back on the detention facilities that are already in place
- Reed Pollock: I thought he was on board?
- Tom Lennox: So did I. Now his putting forth his own agenda to try and appease the Muslim population
- Reed Pollock: His hoping they'll cooperate? Help find the nuclear weapons?
- Tom Lennox: That's it and all he will succeed in doing is to prove to the terrorists that he does not have the stomach to do what's necessary and inevitable
- Reed Pollock: Ok, then you need to use your "influence" to change his mind
- Tom Lennox: [Raises his voice] my "influence"? You don't get it, I have no "influence." Not here: not in this Administration. No, I'm resigning
- Reed Pollock: Sir, that would be a terrible mistake
- Tom Lennox: My "mistake" was to believe Wayne Palmer has the courage and vision to fill this Office. Clearly, I overestimated him: he is certainly not his brother
- Reed Pollock: Which makes it all the important that you stay. Sir you have the support of great many people here, the least of which is the Vice President
- Tom Lennox: Unfortunately the Vice President is not the one in power and this country is being lead to slaughter by the man who is... no I can't in good conscience be a party to this
- Reed Pollock: Sir this is a terrible mistake...
- Tom Lennox: [Interrupts him] I cannot talk about this any further: go now and draft my letter of resignation and bring it back to me to sign
- Marilyn Bauer: [Talking privately] what is it?
- Bill Buchanan: I'm very sorry to have to tell you this: your husband is dead
- Marilyn Bauer: How?
- Bill Buchanan: He "appears" to have suffered a heart attack
- Marilyn Bauer: [Sternly] what did Jack do to him?
- Bill Buchanan: I assure you there will be a thorough investigation. Your father in law is accompanying Graem's body here for an autopsy unless you have an objection?
- Marilyn Bauer: [shakes her head] I have to tell my son
- Bill Buchanan: Of course
- President Wayne Palmer: I checked out your background and despite my "understandable" skepticism, I do believe you are serious about wanting this negotiated peace
- Hamri Al-Assad: On my own terms: yes
- President Wayne Palmer: Let's consider your terms for the time being while we discuss mine. My country sir, has suffered a nuclear attack by the very same terrorist who used to follow you, thousands of innocent Americans are dead or dying as we speak
- Hamri Al-Assad: I am aware of the tragedy in California, I was there
- President Wayne Palmer: Then you understand that if Fayed successfully detonates anymore nuclear weapons on US soil, there will be no choice what so ever for a peace agreement: the American people are demanding we strike back and not just the organizations such as yours but at the governments that support them. Now, if one more nuke goes off, we don't have a choice. Do you understand me? We're talking about war
- Hamri Al-Assad: You don't have to tell what is at stake but I still understand what you want from me?
- President Wayne Palmer: I would like you to appear on public television to address to the world: declare your intention for peace and appeal to members of the Islamic communities everywhere to come forward with any information regarding Fayed
- Hamri Al-Assad: You flatter me if you think I hold sway over Islam
- President Wayne Palmer: No, sir, not all. Just the extremists who share your hatred of the west, I certainly can't reach out to them for help but I know you can
- Hamri Al-Assad: But perception is everything so I must present my agenda to my own people on my own time. Not by appearing American television from the White House. Fayed has called me a traitor and many others will follow him if there is a suspicion that I am an American puppet
- President Wayne Palmer: Not a "puppet", a partner at least when it comes to finding these nuclear weapons and that is what we have to be for your "peace" initiative to have any chance of working so get used to it. Between you and me sir, I really don't give a damn how and when you want to present your agenda: the time is now, you want to lead this "peace" initiative? Then lead
- Tom Lennox: This memo says Palmer is arranging for Assad to make a televised statement?
- Reed Pollock: I heard
- Tom Lennox: Not only are we providing free airtime to a mass murderer and a vowed enemy of democracy, we are proving terrorism works. Do you have my resignation?
- Reed Pollock: No sir, I don't
- Tom Lennox: Why not?
- Reed Pollock: Because you can't resign while this country is being brought to the brink of a nuclear holocaust by a weak misguided President
- Tom Lennox: Damn it I explained this, I cannot get the President to budge on policy, there's nothing I can do about this
- Reed Pollock: What if I told you the "the climate can change"?
- Tom Lennox: What does that even mean? "The climate can change"?
- Reed Pollock: I'm just saying there are people who believe like you that more aggressive steps need to be taken to crackdown on terrorism both here at home and abroad and that a change in leadership is imperative to ensure this nation's security
- Tom Lennox: [Stands up and walks to the front of his desk] who?
- Reed Pollock: [Nervously] excuse me sir?
- Tom Lennox: Who are these like minded people we're talking about?
- Reed Pollock: Oh, I was just speaking "abstractly." But you'd have to agree that your plan would have all the support it needed if the Vice President was the man occupying the Oval Office
- Tom Lennox: Wait, I may dislike the President's current course of action, I hardly think that warrants his removal
- Reed Pollock: I'm not talking about holding hearings: something more "immediate" would have to happen
- Tom Lennox: Oh my God, you can't possibly be "intimating" what I think you are
- Reed Pollock: I'm not "intimating" anything, I'm just simply "musing"
- Tom Lennox: Careful: that kind of "musing" will get you thrown in prison
- Reed Pollock: I'm sorry sir, that you "misunderstood" me
- Tom Lennox: I certainly hope so, for your sake. I think you have a letter to draft for me
