The Arm-chair for the Day-dreamers
theatrum-113 January 2007
"The Arm-chair" is the first part of the legendary Czech TV series from the late sixties - The Song for Rudolph III. This original serial is a set of differ stories about Prague butcher Rudolf and his family (consequent but naive wife, resourceful daughter Sárka and her boy-friend Vanek). Their episodes, that are connected with the theme of day-dreaming, are supplied with the songs (in a form of clips outgoing from the context of each story) of famous contemporary Czech popular singers and songstress (e. g. Waldemar Matuska, Marta Kubisová, Vaclav Neckar).

In this part the story is beginning with Vanek's present for Sarka - old-fashioned arm-chair. She wants his father to dream in it and he starts to imagine that he owns a castle and all singers come to him... The story is a mixture of scenes from Prague reality and a dream. This combination is a well of humor and nice atmosphere. The songs (almost written for this occasion) are beautiful and the clips have impressive choreography and stylization.
