Happy Birthday to you, Ciara! The singer turns 32 years old today, and she certainly has a lot to celebrate. Not only did she welcome her second child—a baby girl named Sienna Princess—into the world with hubby Russell Wilson, she's also been busy raising her 3-year-old son, Future, all the while continuing on in her successful career. Speaking of the music, this year also saw Ciara sign a new deal with Warner Bros. Records with whom she's working on her seventh studio album. Though she's been tight-lipped about it, she did tell Harper's Bazaar, "I want to make the world dance." And we wouldn't expect anything less because that's truly what...

"We Shall Overcome," the iconic anthem of the civil rights movement, has itself overcome copyright control. On Friday, a New York federal judge partially granted summary judgment to those seeking to free it from the grips of a publisher.
The lawsuit against Richmond Organization and Ludlow Music came in April 2016 from the same legal team at Wolf Haldenstein who previously got Warner/Chappell to back off from ownership claims over "Happy Birthday to You." In the complaint, the plaintiffs — which would later include the producers of Lee Daniels' The Butler — alleged that the song emanated from an old African-American spiritual before being picked up...

Happy birthday to you, Cameron Diaz! The actress—who's been taking a break from the spotlight recently—is probably ringing in her 45th birthday alongside her hubby, Benji Madden, and close group of A-list gal-pals (like Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Richie) today...but we've got other plans. First of all, it's hard to believe Diaz is 45 when we think back on her start in the industry and the many roles she played that still have a special place in our hearts (some of us make it a point to watch There's Something About Mary at least once a month). In fact, the blonde beauty first made waves in the industry at just 21-years-old, starring alongside Jim Carrey...

In her own words, she was only good for making tunes. So why does this film feel the need to mythologise?
Amy’s opening minute is also its best. In the stairway of a north London semi, a 14-year-old Amy Winehouse joins her friends in an impromptu performance of Happy Birthday To You, only to break from the pack and launch into a transcendent solo rendition of the song’s final line. It’s a flash of brilliance rooted in something otherwise ordinary, which – the film suggests – is also how Amy saw herself. “The more people see of me, the more they’ll realise that all I’m good for is making tunes,” she says later on. “So leave me alone.”
From its glitzy opening title sequence onwards, however, Amy seems determined to prove its subject wrong, insisting that her life – and not just her music – was of some divine significance.

Read More: A Filmmaker's Guide to Music Licensing After a publicized legal battle, a U.S. District court has ruled that "Happy Birthday to You" -- apparently, the most popular song in the English language -- is "potentially free from copyright" and should be considered part of the public domain. Federal judge George H. King ruled in the suit that the copyright first filed by the Clayton F. Summy Company in 1935 only applied to a specific arrangement of the song, not the entire song itself. Moreover, the judge ruled that Summy never even acquired the rights to the song’s lyrics, and that the defendants' objections were "implausible and unreasonable." Per the ruling: "Because Summy Co. never acquired the rights to the Happy Birthday lyrics, Defendants, as Summy Co.’s purported successors-in-interest, do not own a valid copyright in the Happy Birthday lyrics." Warner/Chappell Music has been licensing the song since 1988, when.

The two-year-old "Happy Birthday to You" class-action suit that challenged the validity of the song's stringent, decades-long artistic copyright finally received a ruling Tuesday: The six-note ditty is now officially part of the public domain and can be used for free, in any piece of art, by anyone. Federal judge George King said the companies that have held the song's original copyright, including Warner/Chappell Music most recently, were "granted only the rights to specific piano arrangements of the music, not the actual song," according to the L.A. Times. "Because [original owners Clayton F.] Summy Co. never acquired the rights to the Happy Birthday lyrics," King wrote, "Defendants, as Summy Co.'s purported successors-in-interest, do not own a valid copyright in the Happy Birthday lyrics." Warner/Chappell, which has the option to appeal King's decision, had acquired the song's copyright for $15 million in 1988, and has since been attempting to collect royalties.

For a song as iconic as "Happy Birthday," the rights issues behind its usage in films have been as confusing as any flow chart explaining which Marvel characters belong to which studio. But no matter how you sliced it, before today you couldn't use that famous song of songs to commemorate a fictional character's birthday without paying. Times have changed. Variety broke the news that after decades of the lyrics being copyrighted by private companies, the most recent being Warner / Chappell Music, "Happy Birthday To You" is officially a part of the public domain. This means that anyone can sing the lyrics to "Happy Birthday" in a film, and not have to spend one red cent on either the rights to the song, or on songwriters to create a new substitute. Considering the tune to "Happy Birthday" has been in public domain since 1949, this is a pretty big step for...

At the stroke of midnight Sajid's buddy Salman who happens to be the leading man of Kick rolled in a cake shaped like camera. And the fun began. Says a member of Sajid's core crew, "It was just too overwhelming for Sajid. Salman, Jacqueline Fernandes, choreographer Ahmed Khan and the entire crew sang 'Happy Birthday To You' and other birthday songs tapping their feet, clapping and dancing. It was very heartfelt spontaneous and unplanned." To top it all Sajid family also dropped in to wish him. When Sajid's wife, son and mother walked in to wish him, he couldn't take it anymore.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Have you ever seen the Spanish short film HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU? If you haven't, try and find a way to see it, because it's absolutely extraordinary. After playing dozens of festivals, director David Alcalde is finally set to make his directorial debut here in the States with a remake to the '70s Spanish horror flick, WHO CAN KILL A CHILD? Co-written by Alcalde and David Muñoz, IN THE PLAYGROUND will follow a vacationing couple arrive on an island where the native children have gone crazy and are murdering adults. Gold Circle Films is producing.
