According to Spike Lee, Denzel Washington isn’t planning to add to the four films that he’s already directed.
Whilst Denzel Washington continues to be one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons as a movie star, he may well be done as a director.
Despite helming four films (with one of them receiving a Best Picture Oscar nod: that’d be Fences), Washington is reportedly finished with directing. That news comes from Spike Lee, who revealed Washington’s decision during a Variety interview with Bradley Cooper.
Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have been friends and collaborators for a long time, so there’s no reason to doubt Lee’s comments. Assuming that Washington is finished, it would certainly be a shame for him to exit directing, given that he’s proven himself really rather decent at it.
As it stands, Denzel Washington’s directorial filmography includes The Great Debaters,...

Steven Spielberg is no stranger to tackling dark material like Schindler’s List and War of the Worlds. But when it came to this Denzel Washington feature, he just wasn’t in the right place in life to helm the project.

The world could’ve seen a rare collaboration between Washington and Spielberg with The Little Things. The film came out in 2021, and saw Washington playing a detective hunting a serial killer in the 90s. The project ended up being directed by John Lee Hancock, but the film initially arrived on Spielberg’s desk.
The film’s script had been floating around for years. According to Hancock, by the time the story found its way to Spielberg, he had his fill of dark material.

Denzel Washington once again proves his movie star status as his Equalizer 3 is currently looking at a solid $35-$37 million weekend, with around $43 million 4-day take, which falls perfectly in line with our predictions from Thursday. That number will put it squarely in the number two spot for the Labor Day holiday, pulling ahead of Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of Halloween which opened with $30.5 million and behind Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ $94.6 million in 2021.
The thing I didn’t realize going in to this weekend is that this is the first fully theatrical movie Denzel has starred in since the last Equalizer film hit theaters in 2018. He would take time to star in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway for which he would earn rave reviews and a Tony Nomination. In 2021 Washington had three movies released: The Little Things, which is an excellent throwback thriller starring Washington,...

"The Equalizer" has been a sturdy franchise for Sony over the last decade. Based on the 1980s CBS series starring Edward Woodward, the films are a model of narrative simplicity: Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a world-weary yet principled ex-CIA operative who bounces around the globe to help powerless people overcome viciously corrupt criminals. They're self-contained vigilante yarns powered exclusively by one of Hollywood's most magnetic stars in full-on badass mode. Aside from their extrajudicial nature, they're basically Charles Bronson's "Death Wish" movies absent the racism and wretched treatment of women.
As such, they're utterly critic-proof, and Washington, a two-time Oscar winner who's widely considered to be one of our finest actors, shows no compunction about playing to the cheap seats. He knows audiences dig him in this kind of badass role, and, thus far, he's been proven right at the box office. The first two films (barely...

Actor Denzel Washington made a career for himself as one of Hollywood’s most popular and consistent leading men. But despite his accomplishments, there came a point where Washington considered walking away from acting for good.
What helped Denzel Washington stick with acting Denzel Washington | Miikka Skaffari/FilmMagic
Washington’s filmography is full of memorable and lauded material. A few of them have even been nominated and won Oscars. But over time, the actor started becoming disillusioned with his career. Not because he wasn’t being offered work, but because he wasn’t interested in the work he was being offered.
“A couple of years ago I was really bored and I was getting some great roles but just thought I can’t do this anymore,” Washington once told Movie Hole.
This changed after he directed the feature Antwone Fisher. The 2002 movie was based on the real-life story of the titular figure,...

Creed III opened on March 3rd, making it the ninth movie in the Rocky franchise and the third in the successful spin-off series. The film also marks star Michael B. Jordan‘s debut as a director. Several of the fight scenes, especially one in particular, look vastly different from a typical boxing movie and even past Creed films. Critics say Jordan left his creative mark on Creed III, and anime was a clear inspiration.

There may be no crying in baseball, but there were tears all throughout the world premiere of Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own.”
Co-created and executive-produced by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”) and Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle”), “A League of Their Own” debuted at Tribeca 2022 on June 13. The TV reimagining of Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 film of the same name was a “labor of love that has taken most of our adult lives,” Jacobson joked while introducing the pilot episode, which premieres on Prime Video August 12.
“We had a chance to talk to Penny before she passed away,” Graham explained. “She told us these stories changed her life and it will for you too. As much as we love the movie, it’s really the stories underneath it, including the ones of queer women, of women of color, those ones that didn’t make it into the 1992 film.

Denzel Washington received his 10th Academy Award nomination for his performance in "The Tragedy of Macbeth." The performance received widespread acclaim from a major director in Joel Coen taking quite a big pivot from his usual work. Entering his late 60s, Washington keeps showing us new, exciting things on screen that prove why he was one of our finest living actors.
Did you know Washington also directed a movie that came out in 2021? And that it starred Michael B. Jordan? Based on the film's paltry box office receipts, not many of you did. I saw "A Journal for Jordan." It was ... fine. The...

"A Journal For Jordan" united two of the most prominent Black actors working today: Michael B. Jordan and Denzel Washington. Jordan stars in the film as First Sgt. Charles Monroe King, who writes the titular journal as a guide for his infant son Jordan. Washington directs and, in a career first, chooses to stay behind the camera rather than casting himself in a role. And while "A Journal for Jordan" itself was less than well-received critically, Jordan took more from the film than just warm memories; he also described the experience of working with Washington as a "master class" in acting and filmmaking.

Peacock has released the first trailer for Season 2 of its original comedy series “Girls5eva,” which follows a ’90s girl group of the same name as they attempt to rise to pop star relevance once again.

In 1997, UCLA cinematography professor William McDonald was home with his newborn daughter. As he looked into her eyes in his sleep-deprived state he began to wonder what her life would be like if she grew up and wanted to become a cinematographer. Would she have the same opportunities as men who wanted to study cinematography? Would she be able to find work after getting a degree and experience?
At the time, female cinematography students were few and far between. Things looked similarly bleak for working female DPs during that period. McDonald thought that could change if more women had the opportunity to study and train in the field, so he set a goal of admitting 50% female students into cinematography studies each year.

After 15 years, Will Smith is ready to revisit the postapocalyptic ruins of New York City in an "I Am Legend" sequel, but he's not facing the zombie-vampires alone. Smith has enlisted the help of "Black Panther" star, Michael B. Jordan, to create the follow-up film, according to Deadline. As part of their first collaboration, Smith and Jordan will produce and star in the upcoming feature. "Gonna be good," Smith captioned a screengrab from the film on Instagram on March 4.
The movie will be written and produced by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who is responsible for adapting Richard Matheson's postapocalyptic horror novel, "I Am Legend" (1954) into the 2007 film. Following its initial release in 2007, "I Am Legend" opened with $77,200,000 in box office sales and eventually raked in $585,400,000 worldwide.
As of now, the sequel does not have a dedicated director or a set release date.

Will Smith is set to return for a sequel to his 2007 movie “I Am Legend” at Warner Bros., and he’ll be joined in the cast by Michael B. Jordan, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
In the original film from 2007, Smith starred as the last man in New York after a plague has wiped out most of humanity and turned the rest into zombies. A sequel to the film has been in the offing ever since, but never quite came together. Until now.
While plot details are being kept under wraps for the new movie, Akiva Goldsman is returning to both write and produce the follow-up after he originally adapted the “I Am Legend” screenplay based on a book of the same name by Richard Matheson.

The remaining previously non-home available titles among Best Picture and acting Oscar nominees by tomorrow will all arrive either on PVOD, VOD, streaming, or some combination. “West Side Story” hits HBO Max and Hulu and PVOD, “Drive My Car” VOD and HBO Max (the latter tomorrow), while “Licorice Pizza” is out on PVOD only.
Meanwhile, Tyler Perry’s blockbuster Madea franchise moved to Netflix in one of the streamer’s most significant franchise acquisitions, with “A Madea Homecoming” immediately taking the top position.
“Drive My Car” is making the most interesting news. As of today, it is listed at Vudu and Amazon Prime to rent at $5.99 and iTunes $6.99. Google Play lists is still as not released.

Damson Idris reflected on his early days working on FX’s Snowfall, and the words of inspiration he received from series creator John Singleton. Singleton died in 2019 at the age of 51.
“In essence, that symbol implanted in me was to just be truthful,” Idris said during the show’s Ctam panel on Thursday. “To just stay true to the story, true to the people of the times, and really respect this time. We often talk about the bad that came out of this time, but there’s so much good that came out of it too. It had a huge impact on pop culture, fashion, music, and that’s what the show shines a lens on.”
He continued, “Singleton would always say, ‘Everyone that you meet on the way up you’re going to meet on the way down.’ So I’d say the seed was actually making me a leader.

Costume designer Sharen Davis is having a big year, having worked with both Denzel Washington, who directed “A Journal for Jordan,” now in theaters, and with Will Smith, who stars in “King Richard,” on HBO Max.
“A Journal for Jordan,” based on the heartbreaking true story of a soldier deployed to Iraq who keeps a diary for his infant son, is the latest of her frequent collaborations with Washington. Davis says she worked hard to dress down “fashion icon” star Michael B. Jordan. Since the character was in the military, she decided he would have a suitcase with few items. “We want to see how he manages all these visits with five shirts and three pairs of pants,” Davis says.

Denzel Washington never saw a production of “Macbeth” in high school or college. So when he was offered the titular role in Shakespeare’s great tragedy, which he’d only read in the past two years, he wanted to make sure that he could wrap his head around how director Joel Coen would shoot the film with him and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. “Let’s talk about the black and white of it all,” Washington recalls saying to Coen in an early conversation.
Coen began to respond, “Well, you’re Black …” before Washington stopped him. “No, no, no,” he interrupted. “I’m talking about you shooting in black and white!”

In the midst of a busy Spider-Man: No Way Home week saw four new releases including A Journal For Jordan, Denzel Washington’s latest directed feature starring Michael B. Jordan as First Sergeant Charles Monroe King, a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Dana Canedy. This was Denzel’s fourth feature film as a director, but unfortunately, A Journal for Jordan is his weakest effort as critics gave the film a middle-of-the-road score of 49% on rotten tomatoes.

Spider-Man: No Way Home held the top spot of the box-office weekend for a third straight weekend. Again, the film finished atop second-place film by quite a considerable margin; this weekend by $33.1 million. As it adds to its total as the highest grossing domestic film of last year, No Way Home now sports a three-week tally of $609.9 million.
In its third weekend of release, Spider-Man: No Way Home added another $52.7 million to the bank. This was more than enough to ensure dominance over Sing 2 which, despite holding onto second place for a second straight week, managed only $19.6 million over the holiday weekend. This gives the film a two-week total of $89.7 million. Climbing a spot to land in third place this weekend, was The King’s Man which, despite mixed reviews, added $4.5 million to raise its two-week tally to $19.5 million. Despite having the second-biggest Christmas-period grosser ever with “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony), this New Year’s-adjacent weekend plunged decidedly below similar ones. A roughly $95-million total places it far below the normal range, even without adjusting for inflation, of $140 million and above for the three days.
“Spider-Man,” at $52.7 million, continues its spectacular run with one of the best three-weekend results ever. It sold 56 percent of the domestic tickets. Add in #2 “Sing 2” (Universal), also having a stellar run ($89.7 million), and the two successes sold three-quarters of tickets.
The rest come in at mediocre or worse. The overall result is a weekend, despite the big numbers at the top, that did only 67 percent of the same period two years ago. Despite the “Spider-Man” surge, the four-week rolling average sits at 73 percent of the corresponding 2019-2020 period.

Sunday Am Update: Comscore has estimated the 2021 domestic box office at $4.55B, which is +100% from last year’s $2.28 billion and off 60% from 2019’s $11.4 billion. While it would be impossible to think we’d come raging back to 2019 norms, it is arguable that the domestic box office recovery isn’t as robust as many expected.

Without “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony) this weekend, it might have been lights out for theaters. Literally.
With it, Covid Christmas No. 2 is a reasonably successful season. The incredible domestic 10-day total of $467 million (and reaching $1 billion worldwide) — as much as double expectations — does raise hopes that the end is in sight for gross-challenged exhibitors. That this comes in the face of the Omicron surge — with holiday plans disrupted, Broadway and other events shutting down, some sports postponed — has to be seen as a major boost for exhibitors’ viability.
Still, the totals for the weekend, and even more so the individual results for most of the films, suggest some stockings got filled with coal. The three-day total of all films will come to around $145 million. That’s 73 percent of the last unchallenged Christmas-adjacent weekend in 2019 ($198 million). December 24-26 fell in the middle of the week that year and took in $188 million,...

Bouncing between multiple timelines before, during, and after the US’s “War on Terror,” Denzel Washington’s A Journal for Jordan is a film that unfolds rather predictably, but is nevertheless impactful thanks to the charisma of leads Michael B. Jordan and Chante Adams. Like Clint Eastwood, Washington has again crafted another exploration of masculinity that could dismissed as “cry(ing) macho”––Jordan’s 1st Sergeant Charles Monroe King is just that, keenly aware of his duties, obligations, and that time may be running out. It must be reported that in the advanced preview screening I saw, with an audience of the general public, there was barely a dry eye in the house.
Straight forward and very sentimental, the film is at its core a love story between sophisticated New York Times reporter Dana Canedy (Adams) and 1st Sergeant King, a man who puts faith and country above all else.

Michael B. Jordan is preparing to make his directorial debut with “Creed III,” the latest chapter in Adonis Creed’s saga, which is set to hit theaters Thanksgiving 2022.
When news broke that Jordan would take the helm of the franchise, in addition to starring as the boxing champ, the first-time feature filmmaker released a statement explaining why he wanted to take on the challenge.
“Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right,” Jordan stated. “‘Creed III’ is that moment — a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally and learning from the Greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect. All of which sets the table for this moment.”
