A film for Coutinho aficionados
gmenezesborges2 July 2020
A Treat of Coutinho (2019) is an unprecedented interview with Eduardo Coutinho mixed with scenes from films directed and performed by the director. For the viewer who doesn't know Coutinho, the Treat is nothing more than an interview about a guy who "smokes cigarettes and makes movies", as he defines himself. The film is made for an audience that already knows the director's professional life career, for who has watched all his films, who has seen and read interviews with Eduardo Coutinho, it's made for the Coutinian audience who knows that the film reveals almost nothing new about the director. But if it's made for the public that will find nothing new, why should we watch to the Treat? First because the montage made by Eugenio Puppo and Gustavo Vasconcelos brings together film recordings with memorable characters from movies like The Ending and the Beginning (2006), Strong Saint (1999), Scene Game (2007) and Babylon 2000 (2001), in addition to showing scenes from the director himself in dialogues behind the cameras. Secondly, because we like to see Coutinho verbalize on themes that pervades his works, such as life and death, work, the art of encounter that presupposes conflict, his magical materialism, unequal power relations and his reasons for making cinema. Last but not least, because we, Coutinians, have not seen any new conversations with the director since the posthumous launch of the Latest Conversations (2015), and we don't know if anyone will ever come up with new material about Coutinho which has had his life taken in 2014. Thus, the Treat is like the last cigarette in the pack. Let's smoke it.
