It's tough for TV shows to recover from bad storylines, but Community, Parks and Rec, and Friends managed to bounce back. Community's "gas leak year" and Friends' Joey/Rachel arc were disliked, but the shows course-corrected with new seasons. Always Sunny faced backlash over Dennis leaving, but the show brought him back while Stranger Things moved on from its lowest-rated episode.
It can be very difficult for a TV show to come back from an awful storyline, although there were a select few who managed to do just that. From misjudged romantic encounters to characters whose stories just weren’t working, an awful storyline can be the death of a great TV show, but luckily, creators, writers, and showrunners have occasionally spotted their mistakes and come back from the brink of disaster. It can be difficult to undo an awful storyline, but, when there was enough good faith from viewers,...

Great TV shows take time to find their identity through non-archetypical characters and plotlines. Sitcoms, like Parks and Rec, struggle with early identity until characters fully form. Even iconic shows like Seinfeld need time to fully find their unique voice and identity.
Even the best TV shows were not without their faults and one common occurrence in acclaimed series was taking some extra time to find their identity. While this happened across many series, it tended to plague truly great shows more because they were the ones trying something new and embracing non-archetypical characters and plotlines. It makes sense considering that actors, directors, and writers needed some time to truly discover the strengths of a series before it goes on to achieve greatness and be remembered in the collective memory as an amazing show.

Found footage horror has become increasingly popular, with many movies using the technique to create tension and engage audiences. The Blair Witch Project pioneered the found footage method by incorporating real-life elements to make the story appear authentic, quickly becoming a classic horror film. Other notable found footage horror films include Rec, Lake Mungo, and Unfriended, each utilizing the technique creatively to tell a suspenseful and chilling story.
Found footage horror has grown in popularity since the success of The Blair Witch Project with dozens of movies now utilizing the approach to add tension and draw audiences in. Found footage is the technique of telling a story through the use of material that has supposedly been discovered. The people behind the cameras are also the characters featured in the story, with natural movement, conversations between those filming and the subjects, and occasionally other recorded footage as well, including security cameras.

Working at Paddy's Pub is a safety risk, with terrible disasters always looming and newcomers becoming victims of the gang's gruesome tasks. The White Lotus Hotels may offer beautiful scenery, but employees constantly get roped into toxic situations and endure torture from guests. The workplace at The Office may have fun antics, but the monotonous and bleak atmosphere, intense office politics, and a micromanaging manager make it a frustrating environment.
Dramas and sitcoms alike have romanticized the workplace, but in reality, some of television's most famous workplaces would be terrible places to clock in. Even the zaniest and most absurd series like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Parks and Recreation, or The Office can create a sense of sentimentality toward their iconic sets, potentially prompting viewers to consider what their lives would be like in similar situations. While the gags and humor may seem appealing, there are major drawbacks to each location.

Some horror movie jump scares can still evoke terror even when they're expected, hitting harder on the second or third viewing. Certain horror films have elevated the jump scare into a veritable art form, employing converging elements to build and delay tension for the perfect surprise. Iconic jump scares in horror history, like the ones in Se7en, Rec, Ringu, The Conjuring, Psycho, Jaws, The Shining, Audition, and The Thing, continue to be terrifying and memorable even on rewatch.
Horror movie jump scares that are even more terrifying on rewatch are somewhat rare. This is because jump scares rely on the element of surprise, and this effect can significantly diminish when the viewer knows what's coming. However, there are moments like this that still evoke terror even when they're expected. Indeed, after the audience is given a chance to absorb a film for the first time, a jump scare and its...

Coming like a bat out of hell to theaters September 14th is the long-anticipated Latino anthology horror film Satanic Hispanics. Filmmakers Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) and Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead) spearhead this fun, yet creepy grindhouse-like horror adventure, combining their artistic forces with horror filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), and Demián Rugna (Terrified). These five Latinos groundbreakers in horror bring their unique styles in distinctive segments that are intertwined in a police investigation of a mysterious and sadistic massacre, with a lone survivor telling horrific tales that are beyond belief.
All five directors share what films and filmmakers impacted them, how Satanic Hispanics came to be, their segments, and the importance of Latino participation in horror.
What is your favorite horror movie?
Mendez: I have two, my favorite horror movie and the best horror movie. The best horror movie is The Exorcist.

Pawnee has taken on Hollywood, as cast members of Parks and Recreation teamed up to join the picket line amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. L’il Sebastian even helped the Parks and Rec team say (K)nope to the AMPTP!
Major Parks and Rec cast members included Adam Scott (Ben Wyatt), Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson), Aubrey Plaza (April Ludgate), Jim O’Heir (Jerry/Garry Gergich), Retta (Donna Meagle), and Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio Saperstein), while those that played smaller characters – Alison Becker (Shauna Malwae-Tweep), Colton Dunn (Brett), Kirk Fox (Sewage Joe), Joe Mande (Morris Lerpiss), Susan Yeagley (Jessica Wicks), and Allan McLeod (Trodd Frankensteip) also turned up. Even Sam Elliott, who turned 79 just a couple days before and played Ron Swanson’s Eagleton rival in three episodes, made an appearance. Schwartz shared a few photos on social media:

Horror is slaying the box office in 2023, accounting for 12 of the year's top 45 films through July. The genre is also killing it with critics: 43 horror movies are rated "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. 2023 will likely go down as one of horror's greatest years, but not because of those reasons.
Horror fans know kills mean nothing without context. Because of ticket costs, comparing eras through the box office lens is like judging your waistline in a funhouse mirror. Similarly, critical praise can mislead because modern horror critics are often genre fans while, older generations many times did not understand the genre's value. When comparing horror eras, you need to close your eyes to tomatoes and ticket sales, and instead focus on your heart and your gut — then let it all spill out.
While ranking the 14 greatest years of horror cinema, I gave greater weight to foundational horror because it laid the groundwork for modern horror's ascension.

There’s a reason that Dracula has endured as a figure of fascination for horror filmmakers for more than a century. Bram Stoker’s vampire creation proves endlessly malleable, subject to all sorts of depictions from actors as far afield as Max Schreck, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman and, most recently, Nicolas Cage. The role is catnip, especially since the Count can be as sexy as he is menacing, as seductive as he is deadly.
That is, until his portrayal in André Ovredal’s Gothic horror film based on a single chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Stoker’s 1897 classic novel. As portrayed by Javier Botet, this is a vampire who seems more a feral wild creature than anything resembling a figure who could reasonably pass among human society. He’s one of the viscerally scariest Draculas ever seen onscreen, but he’s also one of the dullest.

While I Am Legend was a $585 million hit upon the original movie’s 2007 release, its upcoming sequel I Am Legend 2 must fix a lot of issues if the follow-up wants to repeat this success. 2007’s I Am Legend was a post-apocalyptic sci-fi blockbuster starring Will Smith. A very loose adaptation of author Richard Matheson’s iconic horror novel of the same name, I Am Legend saw Smith play Dr. Robert Neville, the lone survivor of a plague that turned humanity into mindless monsters. Matheson’s novel featured a twist ending wherein Neville learned that the so-called Darkseekers he hunted were actually living, thinking beings, but the adaptation jettisoned this.
In the novel, the title refers to Neville’s disquieting realization that, among the Darkseekers, he was as much of a faceless monster as he considered them. However, I Am Legend’s title meaning was changed when the movie’s theatrical...

Parks & Recreation won the audience over with its sense of humor, relatable characters, and fun and heartwarming stories, and there are a couple of behind-the-scenes details that make the series even better. In 2009, Michael Schur and Greg Daniels took viewers to the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana, to meet the characters of Parks & Recreation. Led by the always cheerful Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), Parks & Recreation followed Leslie and her closest friends and coworkers from the Parks Department through both their professional and personal lives.
Every character in Parks & Recreation had their own comedy style, which was key to the series’ success and the popularity of the characters. While Parks & Recreations has a lot of memorable moments, thanks to the comedic talents of its cast, its various celebrity cameos, and some Easter eggs here and there, a big part of the magic of Pawnee comes from behind-the-scenes...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always had the benefit of highly-skilled and popular actors to bring Marvel comic characters to life. The biggest MCU movies have massive star power with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Samuel Jackson, and Chris Hemsworth, while the Guardians of the Galaxy movies also have plenty of big-name actors to work with.

The whole thing felt like a glorious fluke from the get-go. Never mind all those top-tier, name-recognized Marvel superheroes that were being trotted out in the name of establishing a multimedia, cross-branded empire. Let’s spend a lot of money on an obscure late ’60s comic-book title, using characters from its 2008 reboot run, and make that a franchise. We’ll give it to the guy who used to make Troma films. Cast the Parks & Rec doofus as the lead. It’ll be perfect for filling time between Avengers movies.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt and Charlie Day choose the perfect actors to play Wario and Waluigi. This year’s highly-anticipated animated movie based on the video game Super Mario Bros. is already stuffed with great Mushroom Kingdom characters, including Pratt’s Mario and Day’s Luigi. But even with so many classic characters set to appear, the film is still missing a lot of fan favorites, including Mario and Luigi’s mirror-image nemeses Wario and Waluigi.
The evil versions of Mario and Luigi could of course still turn up in a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and if that ever happens, Pratt and Day have perfect suggestions for who should voice the characters. Speaking recently to Digital Spy, the Mario and Luigi stars were asked which of their famous sitcom co-stars should appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, and both had no problem...

It was a heartbreaking moment in Parks and Recreation when Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) and Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) broke up in season 4. As colleagues at Pawnee City Government, the two became close after Ben arrived in season 2 to help Pawnee with its budget crisis. Although Leslie had some strong initial feelings that contradicted Ben's plan for Pawnee, the two came to an understanding and became friends. In season 3, episode 2, "Flu Season," Leslie fell ill with the flu and Ben's concern over her health hinted at a possible romance.
What followed were indecisive feelings and two people hiding their true desire for each other out of professionalism. Leslie Knope's goal was to save Pawnee, but that was hard to do when she was pining over someone she couldn't be with. Chidi and Eleanor were more than just a good romance in The Good Place — their unlikely pairing was essential for the show's themes. Though they were supposed to torture each other for all eternity, they ended up helping one another improve ethically, which ultimately extended to the rest of the group. The Good Place is known for challenging the standard expectations of the afterlife, the concept of human souls, and the idea that humans are morally black and white. Ultimately, each of these topics was supported by the connection between Eleanor and Chidi.
Throughout the four seasons of The Good Place continuity nightmare, Chidi Anagonye, Jason Mendoza, Tahani Al-Jamil, and Eleanor Shellstrop became the best versions of themselves, even though each had been eternally damned to hell after their deaths on Earth. Prolific Andalusian production company La Claqueta has tapped award-winning screenwriter-producer Alberto Marini to direct rural thriller “Últimos días de caza” (“Last Days of Hunting.”)
Penned by José Cabeza, co-scribe on 2016’s “7 Years,” Netflix first Spanish original movie, “Last Days of Hunting” has a completed screenplay and has initiated financing.
The aim is to close the financing phase during this year and begin shooting second quarter 2024, probably in northern Spain.
“Last Days of Hunting” leads a growth-period for Seville-based La Claqueta, which is raising the ante in terms of film production ambitions.
“This is a noir that revolves around torpid masculinity; it is the story of volcanoes that don’t know how to release lava when they should and that explode inwards,” said Marini, who debuted as a helmer with 2015 horror feature “Summer Camp.”

With The White Lotus star Aubrey Plaza hosting Saturday Night Live, the sketch series hilariously spoofed the popular anthology with a new show: The Black Lotus. On the surface, The Black Lotus mirrors the real HBO series as it follows wealthy vacationing tourists, only at this resort, the staff “has no time for this nonsense.” The skit begins with Chloe Fineman reprising her Jennifer Coolidge impression as she checks into the resort. When she realizes she has forgotten her credit card, she asks the hotel concierge (played by Kenan Thompson) if he can trust her enough to allow her to pay later.

As the calendar flips over to 2023, Prime Video is attempting to start a new year on the right track with fresh seasons of some major originals.
Prime Videos’ list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by Hunters season 2 on Jan. 13. The first season of Hunters was set in 1977 and followed young Jonah Heidelbaum’s (Logan Lerman) introduction to a world of Nazi-hunting. After a lengthy wait for season 2, the fresh (and final) batch of episodes will find Jonah and friends venturing to South American to take out none other than Adolf Hitler, himself.
While Nazi-hunting undoubtedly takes up a lot of streaming space, two other Amazon original series of note arrive in January. The Rig, a supernatural thriller set on a Scottish oil rig, premieres Jan. 6. That will be followed by season 2 of fantasy role-playing animated series The Legend of Vox Machina on Jan. 20.

While other horror franchises can be accused of rehashing themselves with each new entry, every part of the Rec series feels like a different movie. The original sets things into motion with staggering execution and results, and the follow-up expands on the lore. After the events of Rec 2, it made sense for Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza to explore the world they had created. So the duo split up for the remaining two movies in the zombie series, with Plaza taking on the third installment. While it would seem like Balagueró got the better end of the deal — his sequel Rec 4: Apocalypse ties directly into Ángela Vidal’s story — Plaza was handed a golden opportunity to do something outside the main plot.
When asked about the new changes of Rec 3: Genesis, Plaza said he and Balagueró “wanted to get some fresh air.” However, their decision didn’t sit well with everyone.

La Pietà.Something strange is brewing in Spain. At this year’s Fantastic Fest, the biggest genre festival in the US, two Spanish horror films picked up major awards: Eduardo Casanova’s La Pietà won the top prize in the Main Competition, and Carlota Pereda’s Piggy won best picture in the Horror Features category. This year’s selection included not just one or two, but eight Spanish-made horror films (plus one co-production and a series): the sci-fi adjacent Amazing Elisa and The Antares Paradox; new work by established names like Carlos Vermut with Manticore, Jaume Balangueró with Venus, and Casanova with La Pietà; and the series Garcia! (In the interest of full disclosure: I’m a programmer at the festival.) The Parks Department crew in Parks & Recreation was pretty much a family, and as such, they supported each other and stayed by each other's sides through many highs and lows, but they also went too far sometimes, such as with Jerry Gergich (Jim O’Heir) – but Parks & Recreation actually had an employee worse than Jerry at one point. Parks & Recreation took viewers to the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana, to meet the crew at the Parks Department, led by the always optimistic and cheerful Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Through her, the audience met her closest friends and coworkers, among them Jerry Gergich, who became a running joke himself.
Jerry, whose real name was Garry Gergich, was the office manager of the Parks Department, but his clumsiness and tendency to get involved in all types of awkward and embarrassing situations made him the office’s target of (often mean) jokes and bullying.

The impact that 2007's "Rec" has had on the found-footage subgenre can't be understated. While not obviously the first of its kind, it did help popularize it in the early 2000s thanks to its clever framing device of a late-night public access show. It also didn't hurt that the gross special effects, effective jump scares, and intriguing take on the "zombie" made it genuinely terrifying to watch at times.
Fast forward 15 years later, and "Rec" co-director Jaume Balagueró can't seemingly shake the shadow of the film he made with Paco Plaza. That's because his latest film, the Toronto International Film Festival entry "Venus," feels more like a loosely Lovecraftian version of "Rec" rather than its own thing. While "Venus" isn't a copy-and-paste of the 2007 film, there are far more blatant similarities than one might want to see, especially given how its premise promises so much more.

Marshall’s credits include “Game of Thrones,” for which he received an Emmy nomination, “The Descent,” for which he won best director at the British Independent Film Awards, and, most recently, 2019’s “Hellboy” and 2020’s “The Reckoning,” which also starred and was co-written by Kirk.
Kirk became front-page news in Hollywood after her extramarital affairs with Kevin Tsujihara, at that time CEO of Warner Bros., and Ron Meyer, the then vice chairman of NBCUniversal, led to their dismissals.

“Nope.” That’s the maddening morsel of a clue writer-director Jordan Peele gave audiences before unleashing his third horror flick into theaters on July 22: “Nope.”
Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott star in this science fiction horror outing set against the legacies of horse ranchers in Hollywood (we think). Although Peele’s latest project has been somewhat vague in its rollout, he’s not the first horror auteur to make their monosyllabic mark with a title that’s doggedly vexing and slyly sinister. Dating back to the earliest days of the movies, films such as “Noseferatu,” “Dracula,” “Freaks,” “Maniac,” “Bedlam,” “Godzilla,” “Rodan,” and more have kept things scary and succinct with titles that practically demand audiences venture into theaters to uncover the terrors behind these single word hints.

A common setting in many a genre outing over the years is the apartment complex due to its familiarity yet isolation. Living in close proximity to other people yet not knowing what’s going on behind their doors offers limitless potential for thrills and chills, which is best exemplified by outings like Roman Polanski’s so-called ‘Apartment’ trilogy including “Repulsion”, “Rosemary’s Baby”, and “The Tenant” but also spreading outward to titles including “The Sentinel”, “Poltergeist 3”, “Dark Waters” and “Rec”, to name just a few. Now, filmmaker Vikram K. Kumar attempts to provide his own take on the setting with this Tamil-lensed chiller that has quite a lot to like about it.

The Málaga Festival Industry Zone (Mafiz) wrapped Thursday, March 25 with a slew of awards parceled out to productions from across Spain and Latin America.
Several projects by women filmmakers dominated the event, which kicked off on March 21.
Spanish documentarian Carla Subirana’s fiction feature debut, “Sica” made off with three private-sector plaudits, including the Aracne post-production cash prize of €20,000 as well as the Rec and Abycine awards, comprising participation in their respective industry labs.
Backed by Alba Sotorra’s Cinema Productions, Galician firm Miramira, Spanish pubcaster Tve and Catalonia’s Tvc, the coming-of-age drama turns on 13-year-old Sica who waits by the Costa da Morte, a Galician fishing shoreline, for the sea to give up the body of her fisherman father who perished at sea.
Other Work in Progress (Wip) awards went to documentary “Of Books and Women,” by María Elorza of Spain and “Nothing” (a working title) by Brazil’s Adriana Guimaraes.

Years before the MCU began, Heroes built a fun universe of superpowered characters. And much like the MCU, the charm of Heroes came from its ensemble cast who helped bring humanity to these characters who could do amazing things.

Parks and Recreation stars Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza are both getting a lot of love on social media as fans celebrate the two stars on their shared birthday. On the hit comedy series, Offerman famously played the role of Ron Swanson, the director of the Parks and Rec department in the town of Pawnee, Indiana. Fans will also know Plaza for her role as apathetic intern April Ludgate, who ends up getting hired as Ron's assistant.
As it turns out, Offerman and Plaza are birthday buddies in real life as well. With a fond appreciation for them both, fans have been taking to social media to pay tribute to the Parks and Recreation stars in honor of the occasion. Posting a group of images of the pair together, one fan wrote, "Many happy returns to two of my favourite people in the world, Aubrey Plaza and Nick Offerman, both celebrating their birthdays today.

Although Parks and Recreation is widely considered to be one of the best comedy shows of the past few decades, most fans will agree that it got off to a rocky start. Season 1 only consisted of six episodes and it was seen as something trying too hard to replicate the success of other similar shows.

Are you religious? Why yes, I follow the Necropath.
Necropath is three short films in one, as a grindhouse-style triple-header of stories all set in the same zombie outbreak. Made on a shoestring budget, and with a very lo-fi, student feel to it.
Our first tale kicks off with some of that classic B movie acting where you get the sense the actors have never experienced a real human interaction before. Even though this particular action is sexual in nature. Our unexpected, unappealing, car bound, oral sex is rudely interrupted by some neck slashing from a creepy looking Gollum type. Gollum proceeds to act very intensely, before taking vast quantities of an unspecified drug via injection. He then runs about again forcing a lady to say “get away from me, I...

Chile’s Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic), and Mexico’s top genre festival Morbido have announced the six titles set to participate at the Sanfic-Morbido Lab, held March 23, a Covid-era online rejigging of their existing co-venture.
“Although the pandemic forced us to postpone the August 2020 in-person version of Factoría Morbido-Sanfic, this did not prevent us from continuing our alliance and redesigning the space for an online version in March,” Sanfic Industria head Gabriela Sandoval explained to Variety. “We firmly believe it is necessary to continue developing and promoting Latin American genre cinema, despite the setback.”
Projects will pitch to a jury headed by Spanish horror legend Paco Plaza, creator of the massively successful “Rec” franchise which was a box office and critical hit in Spain and in territories abroad, spawning several international remakes including 2008’s U.S. version “Quarantine.”

Ron Swanson is often considered the breakout character of Parks And Recreation. Many aspects of the character are based on actor Nick Offerman's real life. Parks and Recreation is undeniably one of the most beloved comedies of the 21st century, and a lot of that can be attributed to the show’s sunny disposition. While comedies like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, South Park, and Parks’ direct inspiration The Office were often fueled by nastiness, cynicism, and boorishness, Parks and Rec used the unrelenting positivity of its main character and the warm relationships between its ensemble to create a feel-good atmosphere that naturally lead to laughs.
Parks’ cheery portrayal of competent, well-meaning civil servants running into the grossly ill-informed, misplaced anger of their constituents has earned it the reputation of being the defining comedy of the Obama era. Throughout the tumultuous and divisive Trump presidency, populated with government employees who seemed as outwardly hostile toward the departments that they represented as Ron Swanson, fans and critics wrote about finding solace in old episodes of the NBC comedy.

Library deals, remake rights deals, movie production — Spanish film sales agents are diversifying in multiple ways to battle the uncertainty of current times.
The coronavirus pandemic has added another wrinkle to an already complex landscape, with sales agents at the crossroads between traditional distribution and streaming platforms.
In February, as the shock waves of the Covid-19 crisis threatened to reach the Berlinale, Spanish sales companies were rapidly doing business. But deals were already impacted by the impending pandemic.
“Everything was rushed after Berlin,” says Iván Díaz, head of international at Filmax, who at the European Film Market clinched several territory-by-territory sales on David Victori’s psychological thriller “No matarás” (“Cross the Line”), toplining Spanish star Mario Casas.
Mainly acquired for theatrical release, the film’s buyers include Wild Bunch in France, Russian Report for Cis, Cai Chang for Taiwan and Dexin for former Yugoslavia. Further contracts negotiated at the Efm were signed several weeks after.

Ruggero Deodato’s 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust is a horror classic. It pioneered what would become known as the found footage genre, which eventually spawned classics like The Blair Witch Project, Rec and the Paranormal Activity movies. It tells the tale of an American film crew becoming lost and brutally murdered in the Amazon rainforest, with the footage being discovered later.
Cannibal Holocaust is notoriously violent, with the gore being so realistic that authorities assumed that Deodato made a real snuff film. He was even charged with the murder of cast members. His defense wasn’t helped by the fact that the cast had agreed to lay low for a year so the director could make audiences believe in the movie’s fiction. Fortunately, he managed to get in touch with them before he was convicted and got them to confirm that they hadn’t actually been fed to cannibals.
