Gautam: The premier of your first film is always special, but not if Diwali is on the same day. People are generally busy with celebrations at home. It is unlikely that all the invitees will turn up - especially if it's an off-beat film.

Once in a while, a movie comes along which revolutionizes the way people think about cinema. Although this movie does not reach that level, the fact that it may be a trendsetter for Indian cinema is commendable. I have been a fan of Hollywood art films like 2001 A Space Odyssey, Taxi Driver, A Clockwork Orange,Raging Bull and the movies of Akira Kurasowa. However I have not watched one Indian movie before in the ranks of The Last Lear. I have missed earlier movies of Rituparno Ghosh and regret not watching them earlier. The cast comprising of Amitabh, Arjun Rampal and Preity couldn't have been more perfect. Amitabh hogs the limelight though. Your focus is always on him in any of the shots he is present in. Such is his screen presence! The Shaenshah of Indian Cinema has given his best for the movie and his lines from the Bard's plays are memorable. The first half begins as a light entertainer. The second half is a little more serious. An interesting sub-plot regarding the curtailment of freedom of Indian women is pretty engrossing too. This movie has no traditional Indian song and dance sequences, music or love as its themes. It focuses on one man's passion and a problem of women in a particular country. This movie is one of the finest to come in recent years from the Indian stables and sure to win accolades worldwide. Kudos to Rituparno for not bowing down to the pressure of the industry.
