Money bins in space

While not completely consistent, the "Super Ducktales" arc was generally a very enjoyable one and prefer it a little more over the other five part Season 2 'Ducktales' arc "Time is Money". The second part "Frozen Assets" for me was the best and the most creative, with the only episode in the arc to disappoint being the previous one "The Billionaire Beagle Boys Club" (which had, considering the characters, potential to be the best part but was spoilt by the ridiculous story).

As far as the five parts in the "Super Ducktales" arc go, the fifth and last one "Money to Burn" is bang in the middle. Not as good as "Full Metal Duck" and especially "Frozen Assets", but better than "Liquid Assets" and a vast improvement over "The Billionaire Beagle Boys Club". On its own, without judging it against anything else, it is more than solid and concludes the arc very satisfyingly, doing exactly what a story arc conclusion should do.

There is not an awful lot wrong with "Money to Burn" actually in my mind, though the initial set up was on the far fetched side and moments early on happen somewhat too conveniently, like the aliens appearing out of nowhere and disrupting the momentum temporarily somewhat.

However, much of the story enthrals and once the adventure kicks in it is non-stop excitement with touches of genuine heart. MEL also adds a lot and it is very difficult to not feel for Scrooge. Fenton adds a lot of heart to this episode and seeing the good in both him and Gizmoduck is touching and sees the viewer seeing another side to them. Making me so happy at how far Fenton has come on as a character since being introduced in a mixed bag way in "Liquid Assets". Scrooge's behaviour is easy to buy and helps make the ending rewarding and not too pat.

Still continue to have no problems with the animation, the vibrancy and attention to detail being great. The scoring is typically dynamic and the theme song is irresistible. The smartness in the writing remains too, as does the ability in making a story that excites and is emotionally investable. The characters are engaging and the voice acting suits them perfectly, great to hear how well Hamilton Camp has settled so quickly into the character and show.

All in all, very solid. 8/10

31 years later, "Super" DuckTales pt 5 - Money To Burn, holds a special place in my heart ^_^

Warning: Spoilers
Wow, I just watched this DuckTales episode on DVD collection 3 and all the memories washed right back in! This is a very, very unique episode of DuckTales, the Season 2 Finale episode and conclusion of the Super DuckTales story arc (super being "unbelieveable" LOL).

Ma Beagle crashes the Money bin into the ocean, everyone and their cousin goes to fish it out and a Star Wars Star Destroyer inspired ship takes the bin a-la Leia captured ship in the original first movie. Scrooge leaves earth with Launchpad and Gizmoduck to retrieve the bin, leaving the boys behind safely on earth. What is interesting about this is it is one of the few times in the original DuckTales that the kids do not have a necessary plot to feed, which was fulfilled in the previous episode rescuing Gizmoduck. I have to be serious for a moment; this is memorable for me as the story was aimed at more of a teenager / adult audience. How to express that is to continue through the plot...

PLEASE NOTE: I speak of some more mature content following but I speak so to explain the significance of this episode:

Our heroes arrive on an a robotic alien world, Gizmoduck hits on a robot with a female form, the group goes incognito in robot disguise and learns the bin is to be melted. Scrooge and Gizmoduck get captured and led to the Robot leader MEL (inspired by Mastermold from X-Men) where MEL invasively removes the Gizmoduck armor from Fenton. I remember as a very young child, who did not understand much, how terrifying it was to see the armored hero helpless, his secret identify revealed to scrooge, and being sent to death for being organic to be used as grease for the robots. Over many years I am well rounded in much animation and I must say this has the taste of inspiration from the Galaxy Express 999 movies and the 1986 Transformers the Movie. In Galaxy Express, the main character Tetsuro's mother is killed by a Robot, he goes to the planet Andromeda to get an eternal Robot body so he is never hurt again, and as he adventures he finds the people who became robots lost their souls. In the context of Gizmoduck, Fenton feels he is invincible with the suit of armor, but when it comes to a foe mightier than his armor...

So continuing with the plot, the writers show us Fenton is the central part of this episode, scrooge only thinks of his money, and Fenton perseveres, using his mind and devises a solution nobody would have thought about. We go all the way back to five episodes where Fenton's boring job is a bean counter. HE is the best bean counter and challenges M.E.L. to a bolt counting dual. The speed of Fenton's mind shorts out M.E.L. and he gets his Gizmoduck suit back! Fenton rushes back to scrooge who are going to be melted down a-la Unicron in Transformers the Movie. Launchpad and Scrooge rush back to the ship while Gizmoduck faces down the robotic adversaries. Scrooge and Launchpad get away while the planet explodes (a-la Star Wars), the Star Destroyer-esque ship engulfs their ship (a-la Star Wars LOL) where they find Gizmoduck has rescued the money bin! They descend upon earth with incredible Transformers the Movie-esque pans of the planets that give a cinematic moving feeling. Launchpad accidentally drops the bin out the bay into outerspace and Scooge Hilariously jumps out and rides it back to earth in an homage to Dr. Strangelove. ^_^ The heroes get back safe and sounds and Fenton get's a date with Gandra Dee who liked him all along (in the first appearance of Fenton as a Bean counter he wants to find a better job because he felt Gandra did not notice him as he was just another bean counter). Fenton's experience built up his confidence and he now stands up for himself. ^_^

Overall the action is fast paced, the writers and animators squoze so much into this episode it is exciting as a stand-alone and very fullfilling as a story arc conclusion. I highly recommend to any fan of animation, comedy and adventure! This is one of my all-time favorite DuckTales episodes!
