Trouble with Bubba

When younger, 'Ducktales' was one of my favourite animated shows, ever as well actually. Luckily, it still is and has held up very well. For me it is even better through adult eyes, the quality is higher, the humour cleverer and funnier and understand the content more. Always needed, and still do need, antidotes and distractions through numerous hard times that still happen on a relatively regular basis now, 'Ducktales' is perfect in this regard.

Season 2 consisted of two arcs, "Time is Money" and "Super Ducktales". Both made up of five parts. Both are enjoyable and well done but neither are among the best of 'Ducktales', find "Super Ducktales" to be the better arc, more consistent and prefer the supporting characters. The third part of "Time is Money", "Bubba Trubba", was a disappointment for me. It may have contributed more to the arc in terms of advancing it and felt less like filler than the previous part "The Duck Who Would Be King", but this was lesser 'Ducktales' from personal view. Always get frustrated when personal favourite shows have episodes that don't make the grade and that's my feeling watching "Bubba Trubba".

It, beginning with what is good, is well animated. That was never an issue with me at this point of the show. It is very vibrant, fluidly drawn and the attention to detail in the backgrounds is also note-worthy. Can say nothing wrong about the music, the score is dynamic, beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Just as animated shows of this kind should be. It is impossible to resist or forget the theme song, one of the catchiest in animation and ever.

There is evidence of smart dialogue writing in "Bubba Trubba", and there are some lovely moments like the musical number, Scrooge talking to a littler version of himself, Mrs Beakley (felt sorry for her) having more of a presence and the Beagle Boys are hilariously awesome as usual. Cannot fault the voice acting either, with Terence McGovern, Russi Taylor and Alan Young to name a few born for their characters.

"Bubba Trubba" does have one very major problem that takes over the whole episode... Bubba himself. There is far too much of him and it all centers around his trouble-making and mishaps, which get overplayed and repetitive and while the regular characters are great and in character the episode misses the opportunuty to fully explore their frustration towards Bubba (excepting Scrooge, his was buyable and understandable). Worse, Bubba as a character didn't do much for me, he is not amusing and is not easy to endear to. Actually found him pretty annoying and his mishaps idiotic and easily avoidable.

Quickly "Bubba Trubba" becomes pretty routine and the trouble-making needed much more variation to work. The story is over-reliant on Bubba's antics and Bubba's presence, and the lack of variety and subtlety makes it feel tired. The ending of the episode also undermines a crucial character's change of heart that nearly gave the episode depth but then the ending makes it feel like it was for nothing, which is just frustrating.

Summarising, disappointing but watchable. 5/10
