Mad Max - Not So Mad at All
gensbill29 December 2019
I'm going to watch anything with Max Martini in it. Check him out in SGT Will Gardner.

This episode is the best of the bunch for this season, with plenty of fairly well done violence...and there is Mad Max.

Worthy beginning.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I'll say this-Esme's story ended great, she died for a purpose and she did her job. Ryan died by her side good too. America or New Orleans now knows the full extent of the NFFA's bull crap, a rebellion is being formed by the Purge survivors.

We are sure gonna get a third season, but are we gonna get the same characters or even story out of the 3rd season? We have no idea what's gonna happen, The Purge 5 gonna lead the same story but without those characters? No idea.

Until I hear "renewal! Same character rumoured to cameo or show up with Rebellion storyline." I just can't get my head around all of them surviving with two characters dying, Ben "GOD" should've died although I'm glad he didn't somehow, Marcus should've killed him but he didn't. Tommy should've died, Sara should've died. There must be a reason why they kept some of these people alive-if not for a new season then A movie.

Renew us!

Stumbled at the finish line.

Warning: Spoilers
Not as focused as the previous 9 episodes, it felt a little unsatisfying.

I really didn't like Ryan's last moments, especially breaking the key card in front of Esme, what was that all about? he essentially committed suicide in front of her to show off? To gloat? It seemed pointless for him to do it as his character was through the whole season one of adapting, and destroying the card removed one option for him, and served no purpose. Very out of character for a series that had done so well to keep everyone in character and has mostly not fed us the common show destroying "smart people doing stupid things" plot devices. Ryan was not stupid, until this episode.

And what's with this "everyone throwing their lives" away carry on? Suddenly everyone's a hero laying their lives down to be a martyr? Esme's ex boss's stair well actions just scanned badly, that whole scene was weird. Esme's inside girl taking a bullet for her and going way out on a line that she knows leads to execution just didn't seem smart or real. The boss not shoot Esme in the back of the head as she walked past with her gun down cos she could kill him, and did?

Thankfully Marcus's story was solid, his character stayed the course saving lives and doing the right thing. The heist team in brasil also seemed cheesy. And for a team that played by the purge rules what was with the explosives breaking purge rules at the end?

Overall the series was excellent and I don't know why such a well plotted and intelligent series didn't have the all important ending charted. I thoroughly expected it too and do feel a little let down but just this one episode, but even so it had its good moments. I'm sad to see the end of some really good characters.

A side note, a few reviewers are dissing season one, which I also really enjoyed. I'm not getting the hate for it. It was quality, just like series 2 minus half of the last episode.

The most improved tv show of the year.
nlight-3631218 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
For us Purge fans, the ones who stuck with it through the first season, the second season had us asking "Are we watching the same show?". In the past, The Purge franchise started to become pretty formulaic. The four films would primarily only take place from beginning to the end of the purge night excluding a 20 minute exposition before commencement. We hardly had a chance to see what goes on to our characters during the other days of the year. The first season of the television show was pretty much the same formula as the 2 hour movies but stretched into 10 hours. A ton of flashbacks were added as well. This gave the show a very sluggish and dull pace. You'd spend some episodes wondering if the plots have even progressed at all. But it seems that the writers really took notes on the complaints of season 1 to deliver a far more unique exploration of the universe with much needed fast paced energy and suspense, as well as an attempt to address questions that previous installments have shyed away from explaining. In every single episode of season 2, there were major plot progressions for each of the stories.

The season premiere started in the middle of purge night with an introduction of new characters. We saw as Ryan, Esme, Ben, and Marcus navigated their way through the night. That purge kickstarted their own stories throughout the next year for the following purge. There was Ryan, who was a money heist trying to help pay for his ill mother. Esme, who was trying to investigate why one of her dearest friends were supposedly murdered during the purge. Ben, who escaped a God mask wearing rapist by murdering him on purge night and is slowly progressing into a psychotic killer. And Marcus, who is investigating a failed hit on him during the purge.

There would always be a fun little mini story happening before the intro. In the season 2 finale, Ethan Hawke reprises his role as James Sandin from the original film. It was a fun and nice little callback treat. This episode gave an action packed and shocking finale for these main characters. Some are given a happy conclusion, some are given a tragic conclusion. Some are even left open ended. They all feel right.

The acting was superb from beginning to end of the season. Max Martini, Paola Núñez, Derek Luke, and especially Joel Allen, doing exceptional work.

As far as I'm concerned, Season 2 of The Purge leaves that problematic Season 1 in the dust. It is a show that has truly found its rythym after a rough start at first. I hope there is a Season 3. Will any more movie characters return? Will any previous season characters return? What other times and places of the purge will we see? The further possibilities on what could be explored are endless.

It's not perfect but it's pretty damn close
tamaraisameal20 December 2019
So I'll keep this spoiler free but this series has done nothing but surprise me. When I watched the first three episodes I didn't expect much. Maybe because I wasn't into the idea of it being based off purge. Disclaimer I'm huge fan of the purge franchise as a whole but a lot of the time the content is usually lacking in some way. You know, bad acting, too much obvious racial politics, plot holes etc. But this series really built up well.

I'll list some cons first. Slow burner for sure but I was addicted by the 4th episode. Bad acting at times but not from the main cast. I also think it would have done better as a feature film or in 1.5hr segment episodes. And unless I'm missing something several stories that weren't concluded.

Anyway, this finale was really intense to watch. I feel character arch's conclude well but left space for another series which I'm really hoping for. With the same story and cast please! Lots of excellent action scenes, I sometimes felt like I was watching a Hollywood film. I was disappointed with the ending in some ways as I was expecting a typical predictable ending and you don't get that. You'll see why that's disappointing when you watch. Lastly, this series is better than any other Purge offering. They're all dull in comparison, I hope this continues and is included in the main film series. Also very happy this is available on prime video in the UK.

Give it watch and stick through it. I almost gave up very early on as I wasn't set on the idea but it works better than any of the previous Purge films or concepts.

Ps. Maybe I enjoyed it so much because I wasn't expecting to at all? Anyway. Still going down as one of my favourite tv shows of all time (S2 only!)

Good finale, but very unsatisfying...
matthijsbrouwer-3363015 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was overall a good ending to the storyline. I'm glad to see that a resistants movement is starting to form as a legacy of Esme. But please, why did Ben get to survive and Ryan and Esme not? It's so unfair. I never hated a tv-show character SO much as I did with Ben. Marcus should have killed him when he got the chance. Letting him survive makes it a really unsatisfying ending!

Far far better than the garbage purge films
searchanddestroy-118 May 2022
I am amazed by the quality of this series, very well made and full of surprises, not destined to silly theaters audiences, always seeking for so predictable schemes. I did not expect such quality and the movies for large screens are even more unbearable and stupid after this series. No super heroes, no winners, no political messages. Just something different. A must see.

Improved and entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
This review contains spoilers.

The Purge's second season finale is entitled "7:01am." The episode concludes the purge for the characters in the second season as they wrap up plots they discovered in the first episode. The episode takes place immediately after the ninth episode and ends with the purge's conclusion.

The tenth episode wraps the story in a satisfying way. I enjoyed how each of the character arcs intersected and concluded in a way that was conclusive and aligned with how their characters were written. The characters all had their fun moments in the episode with the doctor and college student having a tense moment.

The difference between this season finale and the first season finale is that it felt like the second season finale was going to set up a related following season. The first season was more of a stand-alone season which had some characters surviving. The second season has Ben, the campus killer, surviving and becoming heavily involved with the purge. It seemed like the next season would have had him return to try to stop the anti-purgers.

I would recommend "7:01am", the second season finale of The Purge.

Grade: B

The Purge Season Two

The Purge season two concerns new characters that are not connected with the first season. The second season tells multiple stories spanning different characters. A hospital doctor fights off a hitman and tries to discover the funder of his assassination attempt. A college student goes out during a purge night and finds he must defend himself. A New Founding Fathers of America observer has a crisis and discovers a dark secret. A group of bank robbers are caught at the last second and must rescue a member of their crew.

The Purge's second season is much more refined than the first season. The Purge television series has a longer running time and the plots that are on display in this season are more realistic and grounded than the movies. This is one of the best traits for this season as the season has a better overarching story. For instance Esme has a season-long story arc that has her confronting ugly truths about the New Founding Fathers of America. The doctor has many investigations and a moral to uphold. The bank robbers operating throughout the season have the audience learning about the more professional gangs throughout the purge. However the standout story is Ben the college student.

The story that the college student goes through is engaging to watch but utterly ludicrous. The actor did a good job with making the character start grounded and switching into a psychotic purger was the highlight of the season. Ben does ridiculous actions such as killing someone over incorrect change, and killing a student in the dorms. The miraculous aspect is that somehow Ben gets away with the crimes. Despite the crimes happening on non-purge days, Ben successfully evades detection from the police state of the New Founding Fathers of America. In addition, the New Founding Fathers of America with a wide surveillance network do not uncover his whereabouts or identify him correctly. The New Founding Fathers of America state that they were incentivized to stop off-purge violence as it threatens their political hold. This aspect made the season inconsistent but still enjoyable.

I would recommend The Purge season two.

Grade: B.

Disappointing
conspiracaotvbr18 December 2019
It was a cool season up to the bad conclusion in the last couple episodes. I really thought this would be a nice season finale, but it was the worst episode of the season. Maybe I had created too high expectations and forgot this has always been a silly franchise. Hoping for a season 03 anyway.

Less good, much wasted.
saptesh78623 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Just completed season 2 by me. First three episodes are interesting but between episodes from 4 to 7-8 are boring and not watchable only waste of time. Whereas 8,9 and 10 are watchable, but last episode is disappointed. At least I could not expect this drama eventually like it. Why do Ryan and Esme get killed unnecessarily ? Why do Marcus spares Ben when he was nasty men killer ? Why not Marcus kill ben with any poison injection? He could do this easily. This part is not realistic and seems foolish sequence. Ben was a man who is ne.
