Sex & Nudity

  • Very little of concern for young audiences
  • Ballet costumes are tight and slightly revealing thoughout the movie.
  • Li shares a passionate moment with his girlfriend, kissing and caressing her. She says she is a virgin, and tries to explain to him what sex is (he doesn't speak good English). She explains it is a man and woman making a baby.
  • The final performance involves Li dancing in a brief costume, with another woman in tight clothing.

Violence & Gore

  • In training, Li undergoes physical pain to become a dancer. He hurts himself often.
  • Li has a dream that his entire family is arrested by Communist forces and shot to death. (We see a gun pointed at his mom's head, then the scene cuts)
  • Li is arrested by Chinese forces and locked up. He is punched, kicked and dragged away.

Profanity

  • A man shouts the b-word.
  • A racial slur referring to a person of Chinese ethnicity is brought up.
  • A man almost says the s-word, but stops himself. A few mild uses of a__ and he__. A single, almost inaudible use of the Lord's name in vain.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • During a nightmare, Li's family is seen briefly being executed with a gun by Chinese authorities.
  • The idea of an 11 year old boy taken from his family by the government is an intense concept.
  • As a boy, Li cries in bed at boarding school, and his threatened by being callled weak.
  • Talks of arrests and torture.
  • In America, Li is worried that the Chinese government is still watching his every move.
