Actor Adam Scott, who was recently seen by some movie-goers in Madame Web, has chosen the project he wants to make his feature directorial debut with – and while Scott is probably best known for his performances in comedy projects like Knocked Up, Step Brothers, Parks and Recreation, Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, Ghosted, and Party Down, he’s not going to be directing a comedy. Instead, his first directorial effort is a revenge thriller called Double Booked, which he’ll also be starring in… and Deadline reports that he has chosen a great supporting cast to surround himself with. His co-stars in this one are Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), and Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus).
Scripted by David Levinson (Welcome Home), Double Booked will tell the story of a successful self-help writer (Scott) and his heavily pregnant wife (Beetz) who organize a weekend away at a secluded lodge,...

Park is partnering with Lionsgate Television to develop a series adaptation of the impressively f***ed-up story and will produce the show along with his frequent collaborator Syd Lim. "Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing 'Oldboy' into the world of television," Park said in a press release. Past Lionsgate Television productions range from "Mad Men" to "Party Down" to "Yellowjackets," and given the company's wide-ranging list of past streaming and network partners, it's still too soon...

Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft,...

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” led all series at Monday night’s Astra TV Awards, scoring six trophies — including best streaming drama series. HBO’s “Succession” was close behind with five wins, including best cale drama series.
Organized by the newly renamed Hollywood Creative Alliance, the also-redubbed Astra TV Awards were formerly known as the Hca TV Awards. The Astras are unique in separating broadcast, cable and streaming into their own categories.
In broadcast, the biggest winner of the night was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” which won four prizes — including best broadcast network comedy series.
Also on Monday, “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke was presented with the TV Icon award, while composer Ariel Marx (“A Small Light”) was given the Artisan Spotlight award. 2023 was another great year for television. Despite streaming beginning to show some wear and tear and the delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, we got a ton of new series and returning favorites over the last twelve months. We could barely watch everything from event series to revivals, comedies, dramas, and genre offerings. With hundreds of shows to choose from and thousands of hours of programming, here is our list of the best TV shows of 2023.
Being the entertainment gluttons that we are, we put together a nice video of the Top 10 series of the year, while the full-text list of the 25 best is ranked below.
Honorable Mentions
Perry Mason (HBO), Yellowjackets (Showtime), The Power (Prime Video), Citadel (Prime Video), The Righteous Gemstones (HBO), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+), The Witcher (Netflix), Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (Prime Video), The Afterparty (AppleTV+), Foundation (AppleTV+), Archer (Fxx), One Piece...

Starz on Wednesday canceled Shining Vale after two seasons and removed the horror comedy starring Courteney Cox from its digital platforms. In an interview published Thursday, Minx star Jake Johnson told Deadline that he did not expect a Season 3 renewal for the period erotic comedy, which had been rescued by Starz after its cancellation by Max.
Shining Vale and Minx are Starz’s last remaining current comedy series. The premium network, which is in the process of separating from Minx producer Lionsgate Television, has about a half-dozen upcoming scripted series, all of them dramas.
According to sources, Starz executives in private conversations with producers have lamented that comedy is not working on the network.
There have not been development announcements for comedy projects set up at Starz in a year and a half, and I hear the network is not top of mind when comedy pitches are taken out.

With each passing year, cataloguing the best TV shows of the previous 365 days becomes harder and harder. That which we call “television” is such an enormous, broad concept that it seems impossible to even categorize it, let alone rank it in a neat fashion. Basically any TV show you could ever dream of can be found with the right combination of cable packages and streaming subscriptions.
Want the best video game adaptation ever? Boom. It’s done. Feel like watching a bespoke eight-episode saga that brings the works of Edgar Allan Poe to the present day for a political horror satire about the opioid epidemic? Off to Netflix you go. What about a cartoonish dramedy featuring a nun overcoming the trauma of losing her Las Vegas magician father by finding the literal holy grail to turn off a world-ruling artificial intelligence? You’re gonna have to try harder than that to trick the algorithm.

The entertainment world was recently dealt a heartbreaking blow with beloved actor Andre Braugher passing away unexpectedly at the age of 61. Braugher was best known for his roles on shows like "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Before the actor's passing, he had been working on a new TV show for Netflix called "The Residence." It will now serve as the actor's final project. Much remains in flux, but we know quite a bit about the show already.
The eight-episode series hails from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, with Paul William Davies on board as the writer and showrunner. It is based on Kate Andersen Brower's book "The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House," but interestingly, it's said that the show will only use the book as a jumping-off point, so it won't be an outright adaptation. According to a February report from Deadline,...

The late Andre Braugher’s now-final project — Shondaland’s comedic murder-mystery The Residence — remains unfinished thanks to a shut down sparked by the WGA strike months prior. Although the series had been gearing up to resume production, Braugher’s death Tuesday raises significant questions for the Netflix series’ future.
Four episodes of its eight-episode order were shot during the early days of the writers strike more than six months ago, Deadline reports. While the series is slated to resume shooting Jan. 2, it’s unclear if that date will stick, as producers must now figure out how to proceed without the actor.

What made the original "Frasier" series so good? It's a question we at /Film have been feverishly searching for answers to in light of Paramount+'s release of the "Frasier" revival, which is quite mixed, if it's the original series you're holding it to as a standard. There aren't as many jokes per minute, the understanding of its central character isn't always perfect, and they're only just figuring out which elements from the original series were okay to discard, and which needed to be in the mix for the cake to come out tasty.
One of the shakier aspects of this calculus has been the revival's handling of its character dynamics. This is a fully defensible area of weakness -- character dynamics are both the hardest aspect of sitcoms to iron out and the singular aspect that makes them soar or sink. Opinions vary, but if you ask for mine,...

As previously reported, he will star opposite Eleanor Tomlinson in the Starz/Channel 4 series The Couple Next Door.
Now, months before the series premiere, we have the official trailer.
Let's just say it looks like a must-see drama, complete with twists and turns that will turn up the heat on those cold Winter nights.
In addition to Heughan and Tomlinson, Jessica De Gouw, and Alfred Enoch.
"When Evie (Tomlinson) and Pete (Enoch) move into an upscale neighborhood, they find themselves in a world of curtain twitching and status anxiety," the project's official description reads.
"But soon find friendship in the shape of the couple next door, alpha traffic cop Danny (Heughan) and his wife, glamorous yoga instructor Becka (De Gouw)."

Starz to Lay Off 10% of Staff and Pull Away From UK and Australia as Separation From Lionsgate Nears
Starz is set to reduce its staff by 10%, a spokesperson confirmed Friday to TheWrap. The move comes as the premium cable network separates from its former parent company Lionsgate to become its own independent company.
The company will also cease operations in the U.K. and Australia, the Starz spokesperson told TheWrap. This comes after the company announced it was moving out of Latin America during a recent earnings call.
In a company-wide memo, CEO Jeffrey Hirsch explained these changes were made “to align our organization with the growth areas of the business and to prepare us for our next chapter as a standalone company.” The same memo also credited the company’s “laser focus on the changing environment” and ability to adapt as a reason why Starz remains “one of the only profitable premium networks.”

Where to Stream ‘John Wick’ Prequel Series ‘The Continental’ and Get Tickets to Its Hitman Hotel Bar
Before there was John Wick, there was Winston Scott, the manager of Manhattan’s high-end hitman hotel. That’s the premise of The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a three-part prequel series that begins streaming Friday on Peacock.
Based on the Keanu Reeves action film franchise, The Continental takes place in 1970s Manhattan and explores how Winston (Colin Woodell) came to lead the hotel for professional assassins. When his brother Frankie (Ben Robson) steals something “very important to a lot of very dangerous people” from the current Continental hotelier Cormac (Mel Gibson), Winston assembles a team of killers to save his brother and take on the hotel — and every assassin in it.
To celebrate the action-packed spinoff, Lionsgate and Peacock are bringing the assassin underworld to the Big Apple with Welcome to the Continental: The Hotel Bar Experience, a three-week-long pop-up that kicks off today in the Financial District.

Starz is lowering the price of its annual streaming subscription from $74.99 per year to $69.99 per year.
“As one of the few streaming networks that is profitable, we are always looking for ways to drive success for the business while providing great value to our customers,” Starz domestic networks president Alison Hoffman said in a statement. “Our annual plan subscribers are some of our most valuable customers, so we wanted to find ways to drive more people into the plan and reward our existing customers.”
Existing Starz subscribers will see the price adjustment in their next billing cycle.
The move comes after Starz hiked the price of its monthly subscription from $8.99 to $9.99 per month in June – its first increase since 2016.
In its latest quarter, the Lionsgate-owned premium cable and satellite television network reported a total of 29.4 million global subscribers, a sequential decline of 300,000 customers. When looking at streaming specifically, Starz...

Though his long career has been full of box office hits, critically acclaimed projects and some truly scene-stealing performances, James Marsden landed the role of a lifetime on the Amazon Freevee series “Jury Duty” playing … James Marsden.
It is, however, an exaggerated (we hope) version of himself, due to the premise of the show — that everyone taking part in a fake trial is an actor in on the joke except for “star” Ronald Gladden. Marsden shines as a self-centered actor convinced that he deserves special treatment while simultaneously bemoaning his fame isn’t remarkable enough. In one tantrum, he screams, “Let’s all feel sorry for the guy from ‘The Notebook,’ who’s not even the guy from ‘The Notebook!’”
It’s a tricky balance — and add to it the fact that Marsden is improvising without scripted lines and finding himself in situations he has no way of predicting.

As much as we like to try and predict the key Emmy races, some categories are more tough to figure out — and therefore, more interesting — than others. Outstanding drama series? Shhh, I think we have a pretty good hunch what’s going to win. This year’s acting categories have some obvious favorites. However, I would not be surprised by almost anything — particularly as performers have stopped campaigning in the wake of the SAG/AFTRA strike.
One of my favorite categories this year, however, is lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie. And here’s the top reason: This is the only acting category this year that features not a single previous Emmy winner among its nominees. As a matter of fact, half of them have never been nominated at all. Other categories come close. But lead actress in limited/anthology/movie is the only category where I can,...

Molly Gordon on Making Directorial Debut ‘Theater Camp’ and Reuniting With Ayo Edebiri on ‘The Bear’
This interview was conducted before SAG-AFTRA authorized a strike on July 13.
In 2019, Molly Gordon worked for three days on Ramy, the Hulu show about a man exploring his faith in New York City, and it changed her life. She was 23, in the nascent stages of a career she had been dreaming about since childhood. That year, she had roles in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys, but her time on set with creator Ramy Youssef and executive producer Chris Storer served as what she describes as a “turning point” creatively.
This summer, she marked another professional milestone with the July 14 release of Theater Camp, her screenwriting and directorial debut, which she had been working on for years with longtime friends Ben Platt, Noah Galvin and Nick Lieberman. Gordon also stars in the mockumentary-style comedy about an eccentric group of artists working to save their summer camp for kids from financial ruin.

Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

Christopher Miller created the American murder mystery comedy tv series The Afterparty Season 2 is set to release in July.
The plot of the series revolves around an after-party at a high school in which a murder takes place. Each episode of the series offers a different perspective of characters about what happened at that party.
The series is an exemplification of “the millennial whodunnit” which is a new subgenre of the murder mystery. In this type of mystery, the investigation becomes a medium for characters to seek personal fulfillment, second chances, and an escape from oppressive boring everyday life.
When Is The Afterparty Season 2 Releasing? IndieWire
The idea of ‘The Afterparty’ came to Miller during the early 2010s which is influenced by his love for the murder mystery genre. He wanted to make a show in which witnesses will be able to showcase their different perspectives.

What makes a good revival series? Ask the cast of “Party Down” and they’ll be the first to admit returning for a third season 13 years after the show went off the air was a risk — both commercially and creatively.
“It’s pretty easy to tarnish the legacy of the show,” star and executive producer Adam Scott
told TheWrap. “No matter how much goodwill you have with an audience, and no matter how great the cast is, if you don’t have a good story and a good reason for those characters to be there, it doesn’t really matter. You can squander that goodwill within the first 10 minutes of the first episode.”
