Atlantic Rim may be a cheap, DVD imitation of Pacific Rim, but it also works remarkably well as an unofficial prequel, Ryan writes...
History is full of uncanny coincidences. Mark Twain was born on the day Halley's Comet swung by Earth in 1835, and died when it hurtled around again in 1910. The writer Morgan Robertson wrote a book about the sinking of a huge ocean-going liner 14 years before the Titanic collided with an iceberg in 1912. And by an uncanny twist of fate, last month saw the release of Atlantic Rim, which appears to have anticipated Guillermo del Toro's giant-robots-versus-giant-monsters flick Pacific Rim by several weeks.
American film studio The Asylum has a spooky knack of releasing its own similarly-named film just before a major blockbuster. Transmorphers appeared just before Transformers in 2007. I Am Omega appeared at around the time of I Am Legend. Other...

Update: Influential science fiction and fantasy author Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, The Twilight Zone) died yesterday from natural causes at his home, surrounded by friends and family. He was 87. “For having such a fantastic imagination, he passed very peacefully,” son Richard Matheson Jr. told Deadline. “He was not only a monumental talent, he was also every bit a father, friend, and husband.” Friend and fellow author Harlan Ellison wrote today, “I am downsmashed.” The celebrated writer began his 6-decade-plus career in 1950 with the story “Born Of Man And Woman,” published in The Magazine Of Fantasy And Science Fiction. Matheson’s best-known and oft-adapted works ranged from short stories like “Button, Button” (which Richard Kelly adapted into The Box) to novels including I Am Legend (adapted four times into features The Last Man On Earth, The Omega Man, I Am Omega and I Am Legend). Matheson wrote more than a...

Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies Review (dir Richard Schenkman, 2012)
I have to admit something. I’ve never been a fan of The Asylum or their mockbusters.
When they release a flick like Titanic II or Paranormal Entity to coincide with a bigger release, to me it comes off as cheap and parasitic, something right down there with porn titles.
I also have to admit something else, up until recently, I’ve never watched an Asylum title. I completely based my opinion on just looking at the DVD covers and my film snobbish personality. To sum up, I’m a jerk and a snob.
That’s not to say that I was wrong about The Asylum. I don’t know how much merit there is in titles like 2 Headed Shark Attack or I Am Omega, but after watching Richard Schenkman’s Abraham Lincoln Vs Zombies, I’m...

Unsurprisingly, the cunningly titled “The Paranormal Incident” is yet another low budget found footage affair, in this case following a bunch of unfortunate lame-brains as they wander around the usual abandoned lunatic asylum. The film marks the writing and directorial debut of Matthew Bolton, who previously worked on a variety of schlock rip-offs such as “2012 Doomsday” and “I am Omega” – though even these delightful films aren’t quite dreadful enough to prepare the viewer for the mind-raping catastrophe on offer here. For the terminally curious, or those with a perverse desire to surgically scrape the bottom of the barrel, the film lands shortly on region 2 DVD via Arrow Films. The asylum in question is the apparently infamous (though oddly casually unguarded) Odenbrook Sanitarium, where a mass suicide took place some sixty years back. In the present day, a gang of 6 monstrous college students head inside with their cameras, hoping capture evidence of the paranormal.

If someone were to ask you if The Asylum was ever going to make a theatrically released film, you’d probably respond, “Don’t hold your breath!” Turns out Don’t Hold Your Breath will be the title of their first ever big screen bound slasher flick starring “30 Rock” beauty Katrina Bowden.
You would expect with The Asylum building a reputation producing mockbusters and outlandish “mega” movies that their first foray in big screen moviemaking would be cut from that cloth. And you would be wrong. Don’t Hold Your Breath is an original horror flick in the vein of Shocker, The Horror Show, and Fallen.
Are you familiar with the old wives' tale that you should hold your breath when passing by a cemetery lest an evil spirit rejected by both heaven and hell gets inside of you when you inhale? Someone in a carload of college kids on...

Movies from the “golden age” of black and white films (approximately the 1930’s through the 1950’s) almost invariably contain well-written dialogue and strikingly subtle humor, making them a favorite among many fans of cinema. The horror movies of this more subtle period in film history are therefore of a cerebral nature, primarily relying on the viewer’s imagination to generate the true sense of horror that modern movies generate through more visual means. It is these oft-ignored horror movies that will be the focus of a series of articles detailing the reasons why true fans of horror movies should rediscover these films.
With this third installment in the Forgotten B&W Horror series, we move beyond the normal confines of our golden age time period to a movie that certainly deserves more credit than it currently receives from horror fans. The Last Man on Earth (1964), starring Vincent Price, is the...

If you're not familiar with the asylum, they make rip-offs of Hollywood blockbuster then beat them to the punch by getting the DVD in your local store before the film (in this case, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) appears in theatres. While the films are generally bad with low production values, I can't help but watching them (eg: I am Omega which ripped off I am Legend) and I have to admit I am looking forward to Nazis at the Center of the Earth. As for Abe, check out this logline: While the brutal Civil War rages on, Abraham Lincoln must undertake an even more daunting task; destroying the Confederate Undead! Yes, this baby is now casting, so we will get to see it!

The Asylum is famous for copying big blockbuster films and beating them to your local video store via dvd. They turned I am Legend into I am Omega. However, every now and then they pull from the cinematic zeitgeist and do zombie apocalypses, or in this case, nazis. We've got some production stills for you, but be warned, we only yanked the cool looking ones. As with any other Asylum "productions", the production values are terrible. The DVD is due on April 24th, 2012.

Author Richard Matheson is selling the film rights to 150 Books, Plays, and Scripts. Richard Matheson is the author of the 1954 short story I Am Legend, which has already been adapted into three films: “The Last Man on Earth in 1964, as The Omega Man in 1971, and as I Am Legend in 2007, along with an unofficial direct to video production capitalizing on that film, I Am Omega. It was also the inspiration behind the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead”, as well as 1983 novel What Dreams May Come (made into What Dreams May Come), the 1970 short story Button, Button (made into The Box), and the 1956 short story Steel, which was adapted into Reel Steel, a film premiering today in the United States theaters.
With positive film reviews coming in for Reel Steel, this was a very opportune time for Richard Matheson to make this move, especially if Reel Steel is number one...

I just bought one of those Midnight Horror movie packs for $5 at Walmart. I mostly bought it for Demonic Toys, but it also features the Asylum film I Am Omega. Believe it or not it was actually better than Will Smith's I Am Legend. It features the guy from Iron Chef (Mark Dacascos) in the Robert Neville role, and instead of vampires it has mutants. I recommend it to people who enjoy low-budget post-apocalyptic movies. Asylum is currently working on another film entitled 2 Headed Shark starring Carmen Electra, Brooke Hogan, Charlie O' Connell, Christina Bach Norman and David Gallegos. I have a feeling this one won't be as good as I Am Omega. Check out Electra and her huge boobs on the set below.

If memory serves, Asylum hasn't produced a zombie film since the mixed bag that was I am Omega. We'll in the wake of Walking Dead, the upcoming World War Z film and, well, just zombie mania in general, the famous mockbuster production company is bringing the dead back to life in Zombie Apocalypse.
Synopsis:
Zombie Apocalypse is an action packed adventure about a band of humans trying to survive a post-apocalyptic world full of flesh-hungry zombies.
Months after a zombie plague has wiped out 90 percent of the American population, a small group of survivors fight their way cross-country to a rumored refuge on the island of Catalina.
The films has managed to get a cast in Ving Rhames, Taryn Manning, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Johnny Pacar, and Eddie Steeples star in the film directed by Nick Lyon.
Check out some images from the film below.

What if you wanted to knock-off Jonathan Liebesman's Battle: Los Angeles and you only had 1% of the budget? Well, you would still have 700K and you could name your film something very similar like Battle of Los Angeles. This is what The Asylum is known for and 700K is not the budget of their latest.
In 2007, The Asylum tried to capitalize on the blockbuster I Am Legend, with I Am Omega. The result was a decent film (I Am Omega Review). The Asylum has copied other looming big budget films like Transformers, with Transmorphers and James Cameron's Titanic with Shane Van Dyke's forgettable Titanic II (A Titanic II Review). How will Battle of Los Angeles fare? That depends on movie watchers inability to decipher the good, Battle: Los Angeles from the arguably bad, Battle of Los Angeles. The first trailer for the latter is below, courtesy of Quiet Earth.

You know you are cheap when you find yourself rooting around bargain bins for the best horror deals. The thought of a sequel to Titanic has always been something to laugh about. It's a sequel that no one expected to get made, but thanks to The Asylum, we now have a Titanic 2! The Asylum is a direct-to-dvd production company responsible for producing incredibly bad knock-off films of some big budget Hollywood movies such as, The Terminators, Street Racer, Sunday School Musical, Transmorphers, Transmorphers 2: Fall of Man, Snakes on a Train, I Am Omega, Da Vinci Treasure, Temple of the Skulls, Hg Wells’ War of the Worlds, Avh: Alien vs. Hunter, Monster, and Pirates of Treasure Island.
They have now completed production on Titanic 2. On the 100th anniversary of the original voyage, a modern luxury liner christened “Titanic 2,” follows the path of its namesake. But when a tsunami hurls an ice berg into the new ship’s path, the passengers and crew must fight to avoid a similar fate.

In case you got confused and thought this was the Guy Ritchie movie, it isn’t. This is the Sherlock Holmes movie with dinosaurs!. And robots. And steampunk battle armor. And sea monsters. And girls with guns. Well, that other Sherlock Holmes had girls with guns, too. Gee, but it’s kinda funny how Asylum Entertainment’s films often somehow seem to get mistaken for other movies. Like Alien vs Hunter, starring William Katt, which totally isn’t Alien vs. Predator. Or The Da Vinci Treasure, starring C. Thomas Howell, which -- hello! -- is absolutely not The Da Vinci Code. I mean, duh! Or I Am Omega, starring Mark Dacascos, which is soooo not I Am Legend that it’s not even funny. Why would people keep making such mistakes? No one, on the other hand, mistakes Asylum’s Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus for anything other than what it is.

While the Asylum was right out of the gate with their I Am Legend knockoff, I Am Omega, director Sean Skelding was meticulously planning a spoof. Now, after two years, I Am Virgin is nearly upon us. Seriously.
From today’s press release:
I Am Virgin is a spoof of I Am Legend, the 2008 science fiction release starring Will Smith. In I Am Virgin, Portland actor Adam Davis plays Robby, the last uninfected man standing in a world ravaged by a virus that has transformed all of humanity into horny, sex-crazed vampires. And as the title suggests, Robby is a virgin.
You’ll be able to catch the horror spoof from January 29th to February 3rd at the Clinton Street Theater in Southeast Portland before a DVD and cable release. What’s next for Sean Skelding, you might be asking? Stripperland, of course. That’s a take off on Zombieland in case you were wondering.

If you’ve spent any amount of time browsing the shelves of your favorite locally-owned video store, chances are you’ve stumbled across a title from dodgy distributor The Asylum. Their endless supply of so-called “mockbusters” — films that are, essentially, low-budget knock-offs of big-budget theatrical releases — are good for an unintentional laugh or two, but for the most part, you’re better off pretending they don’t exist. The only notable exception, of course, is the Mark Dacascos vehicle “I Am Omega,” which is a coy little companion piece to the Will Smith action flick “I Am Legend.” The company’s Wikipedia page has a complete list of these laughable films if you’re interested. The Asylum’s latest immortal classic, 2009’s “Paranormal Entity,” looks like a cross between “The Blair Witch Project,” “Paranormal Activity,” and, God forbid, “Strawberry Estates.” The trailer has been included below to serve as a...

Billed as a "campy thriller that pays homage to Friday the 13th," the film pits a group of girls against a mad man in an mental institution.

30 Days to Die stars Marc Sheffler, Marjan Faritous, Brendan Connor, Wendy Carter and Shirly Brener.

Richard Matheson is one of the strangest writers associated with Hollywood. I don't say that because of the myriad horror efforts, Twilight Zone episodes, or things like What Dreams May Come that have his name attached. I say it because so many things he's written just won't go away. Matheson has credits going back to things like 1957's The Incredible Shrinking Man, based on his novel The Shrinking Man, and it's exactly the movie you think it might be based on knowing nothing more than the year and title. He wrote a lot of television back in the day, and then in 1964 we got a movie known as The Last Man on Earth based on a little novel he wrote called I Am Legend. In 1971 we get Omega Man, based on I Am Legend. In 2007 we got both I Am Omega and I Am Legend, also based on the same work.

Ok, this is a straight-to-video film and yes, it looks - by any conventional standard - completely dreadful. But Mega-Shark Vs Giant Octopus also looks so utterly bonkers that it might just prove hilarious, in the same way that Empire forum favourite Shark Attack 3 is dreadful but entertaining. The plot sees a gigantic shark and equally ma-hoooo-sive octopus frozen for 10 million years while locked in mortal combat, only to be reawoken in our time and cause havoc with modern shipping and indeed air travel up and down the coast of California. The film stars Debbie Deborah Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas, and is written and directed by Jack Perez. It all comes from The Asylum, the same studio that brought us I Am Omega and Street Racer. So you know it's good. And hey, any film where a gigantic shark jumps 35,000 feet in the air has got to be worth watching - right?...

I'm reminded every summer of The Asylum, a low budget studio that makes films loosely based on the big movies in theaters at the time. It's no coincidence: Snakes on a Train, I Am Omega, Da Vinci Treasure, Sunday School Musical, and Transmorphers are titles in the Asylum catalog.
It's a banner summer for Asylum, too, whatever that means. Just look at these movies they very nearly came up with on their own: Dragonquest, Transmorphers: Fall of Man, The Land That Time Forgot, and the mysteriously named The Terminators. Gee, I wonder what that could be all about.
Well, according to the description, it's nothing like Terminator Salvation: "A small band of resistance fighters battle the cyborgs that have taken control of the planet."
See? Completely different. If you need more proof, just watch the award-winning trailer for The Terminators:...

The Asylum company is at it again, this time making a similar film to "Terminator Salvation," which Warner Bros is planning to release on May 21st. Entitled "The Terminators," the film is a continuation to a long history of Asylum releasing terrible versions of upcoming popular blockbusters straight to DVD. In "The Terminators," a small band of resistance fighters battle the cyborgs that have taken control of the planet. It is scheduled to appear in stores on April 28th. Check out the trailer below. Asylum is also responsible for such films as "Street Racer" (aka Speed Racer), "100 Million BC" (aka 10,000 BC), "Monster" (aka Cloverfield), "I Am Omega" (aka I am Legend), "The Day the Earth Stopped" (aka The Day the Earth Stood Still) and my favorite... No, Jaws of the Mississippi is not the title of a recently discovered Mark Twain manuscript that pits Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Fin in a life-or-death battle with a Great White shark ("We're gonna need a bigger raft!"). It is, however, the title of a new killer shark movie involving a radioactive Great White prowling the freshwaters of the Mississippi River.
Yes, a radioactive shark, but not of the glowing atomic age monster variety, in case you're expecting something truly outlandish. I'll let the Active Entertainment plot synopsis explain the premise:

On December 16th, The Asylum is set to release The Day The Earth Stopped, their mockbuster version of Fox's big budget The Day The Earth Stood Still remake starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly opening on December 12th. At least that was the plan. I know from my communications with past Asylum employees that they've raised the ire of Hollywood studios before, but never before has it led to legal action - until now.
Yahoo News has a story about Fox taking issue with The Asylum's The Day The Earth Stopped and firing up their legal department to do something about it. Got an email the other day from filmmaker Leigh Scott regarding several upcoming productions from Bullet Films, a subdivision of Blackthorne Industries, the production company he and other ex-Asylum employees formed after escaping The Asylum late last year. The title that immediately popped out to me was Wolvesbayne, a sort of werewolf Hellboy that has just begun filming.
Described as a superhero-type origin film set in a horror film universe, Jeremy London ("Party of Five", Basilisk: The Serpent King) stars as the heroic werewolf who will have to save the world from a Nazi vampire cult leader played by a sword-wielding Marc Dacascos (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Drive) and his vampish cohort, Yancy Butler ("Witchblade", Hard Target). Rounding out the cast are Christy Carlson Romano (the voice of TV's "Kim Possible") as - I'm assuming - the hero's love interest and underrated former Asylum movie regular Rhett Giles as the one and only Van Helsing.
