Josh Brolin is back on the big screen in “Dune: Part Two,” his latest movie role since first playing Gurney Halleck for Denis Villeneuve in the 2021 film. And to commemorate his return, the actor sat down with Yahoo to talk about the highs and lows of his film career, including what’s arguably its nadir: the disastrous 2010 superhero flick “Jonah Hex.” Reviled by critics upon release, the film made back only $11 million of its $47 million budget at the box office, with Brolin and castmate Megan Fox receiving Razzie nods for their performances.

Josh Brolin has had an interesting career over the years. His breakthrough role came with the 1985 adventure comedy film Goonies. In the 2000s, he gained prominence playing significant roles in acclaimed films such as No Country For Old Men and Milk. The 2010s was a great decade for Brolin as he tasted huge commercial success with the last two Avengers films and Deadpool 2.
Josh Brolin in 2008’s Milk
He played iconic comic book characters Thanos and Cable in the two films. However, he had already dipped into the comic book world with DC’s 2010 film Jonah Hex. The film is considered one of the worst superhero films ever made and Brolin is still taking the blame for the disastrous results of the film and continues to criticize its quality.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Two is finally upon us after the writer and actor strikes delayed the release for a few months. The hype surrounding the film is massive and the review from our own Chris Bumbray says of the film, “In this day of assembly line blockbusters, it’s a miracle that director Denis Villeneuve has managed to get not one but two incredible, uncompromised epics like this through the studio system. It works as a tentpole blockbuster, but Dune Part Two is also filmmaking at the highest level.” Josh Brolin makes his return in the second part as well, and although the Academy Award-nominated actor has sealed himself in comic book movie history as one of the greatest villains with his role as Thanos, he still makes sure to talk trash where trash is due.

In the messy saga of making and failing Jonah Hex, Josh Brolin decides to forgive director Jimmy Hayward. The 56-year-old understands the tough times the director went through, especially with his battle against cancer. It’s quite unexpected for the actor to be so forgiving, given how badly the movie was received when it hit the screens.

This flick was Brolin’s first shot at a superhero role outside the Marvel universe, which was a pretty gutsy move. But with Hayward’s rocky ride at the helm, it was anything but smooth sailing.

Josh Brolin told GQ magazine in a new interview that “I won’t ever stop shitting on ‘Jonah Hex’ because it was a shitty fucking movie!” The 2010 comic book film, starring Brolin as the eponymous bounty hunter, is one of the genre’s most infamous flops, earning universal pans from critics and only grossing $11 million at the worldwide box office.
According to GQ, Brolin and his “Jonah Hex” director Jimmy Hayward “recently reconnected” and the filmmaker even “apologized for his part in the mess.” Brolin told Variety last year that part of the failure of “Jonah Hex” is that he rushed to hire a director and Hayward was just too inexperienced to execute Brolin’s vision for the comic book movie. Not that Brolin is interested anymore in taking out the film’s failure on Hayward, who revealed to Brolin that he has bone cancer and has been having several surgeries.

Timothée Chalamet first revealed in September 2022 that his “Don’t Look Up” co-star Leonardo DiCaprio once gave him brief but essential career advice: “No hard drugs and no superhero movies.” DiCaprio has never gone down the comic book movie route, and it’s a path Chalamet has also avoided so far despite the majority of his contemporaries signing up for Marvel and DC films in recent years.
Is Chalamet still committed to DiCaprio’s advice? In a recent interview with The New York Times while on the press tour for “Dune: Part Two,” Chalamet said the door on starring in comic book movies is not completely shut the way it might be for DiCaprio.

For a comic book movie franchise that has never reached the heights of most Marvel or DC films of the last two decades, "Hellboy" has remained shockingly resilient. To that end, Mike Mignola's beloved character is set for yet another big-screen reboot in the form of "Hellboy: The Crooked Man." This time around, the character will be headed back to the 1950s for a folk horror adventure based on one the most celebrated storylines from the comics.
This will be the character's first film since 2019's "Hellboy." Starring David Harbour, it proved to be a critical and commercial disaster. Be that as it may, Millennium Media is set to try to bring the character to life once again with a lower-budget take on the material. So, when will you be able to see the movie? There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Disney, as a studio that has been around for a full century, is known broadly as one of the most successful entertainment companies in history. The number of classic films the House of Mouse has produced is staggering, and the hits far outweigh the misses. Although Disney has missed and missed big on a few occasions, with 2013's "The Lone Ranger" ranking as one of the biggest of those big misses. So much so that one could argue that it's among the biggest box office bombs in history -- not just limited to Disney. Josh Brolin’s career is nearing four decades, with some genuine classics and an Oscar nomination on his resume. But it is not without its duds, and if there’s one that failed the hardest, it’s undoubtedly 2010’s Jonah Hex, which found Josh Brolin as the titular DC character.

Michelle Rodriguez has explained why she’s turned down James Cameron’s offer to return in Avatar.
The Lost actor, who stars in new film Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, played Trudy in the Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster.
However, she does not appear in sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, as her character died in the original.
But this hasn’t stopped Cameron from considering bringing back Trudy in one of the forthcoming instalments, which are scheduled to be released over the next four years.
Rodriguez revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that Cameron said he floated the idea of Trudy’s resurrection by her, but that she stopped him in his tracks.
“Dude, when I saw Jim [Cameron] recently, he was like, ‘I was thinking, ‘What if Michelle came back? A lot of the other characters came back,’” she said, adding: “I was like, ‘You can’t do that – I died as a martyr.

Josh Brolin blames director Jimmy Hayward and studio interference for the failure of 'Jonah Hex'.The 52-year-old actor starred in the lead role of the 2010 comic book movie, which was a critical and commercial flop, and he thinks he "still owes" his co-stars an apology because of what the film turned out to be, which he blames on the filmmaker going "out partying" instead of devoting all his time to the project. He told Variety: "It was not successful creatively or monetarily. I mean, everybody knows how I feel about 'Jonah Hex'."But the biggest thing with 'Jonah Hex' is rushing into hiring somebody. I remember Jeff Robinov, who I’m still close with, who was running Warner Brothers at the time and he was like, look, you’ve got to get a director in the next two weeks, otherwise we’ve got to can this thing.

Even the world’s greatest filmmakers are not immune to studio interference. Ten years ago, Oscar winner Spike Lee released his reinterpretation of Park Chan-wook’s acclaimed cult film “Oldboy.” To say the results were not what anyone had hoped would be a bit of an understatement. Critics savaged the project and mass audiences flat-out ignored its existence. “Oldboy” grossed just over $5 million worldwide, despite an all-star cast that included Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Even at the time, Lee suggested the version of “Oldboy” released in theaters was a compromised feature. Asked about recreating the original film’s virtuoso hammer-fight sequence in a 2013 interview with the New York Times, Lee expressed dismay the finished shot wasn’t shown in its intention.
“It’s not one shot,” Lee told the Times. “There’s a cut in it. Shouldn’t be, but there is a cut.

Lance Reddick, a veteran character actor best known for key supporting roles in films like “John Wick” and “One Night in Miami” and TV series like “Fringe” and “The Wire,” has died at the age of 60.
The actor was found in his Studio City home Friday morning at around 9:30 a.m., according to media reports. The cause of death has, at this time, not been revealed, though it is alleged to be natural. His rep at Portrait PR confirmed the news to TheWrap.
The actor was currently promoting his fourth appearance as Charon, the loyal and beloved concierge at the Continental in “John Wick: Chapter 4” following the first “John Wick” in 2014 and the second and third installments in 2017 and 2019. That was just one high-profile property on which he put his unique stamp, offering a mix of subtle menace and above-it-all bemusement to all five seasons of “Fringe” and the later seasons of “Lost.

Truly shocking news today, as it’s being reported that actor Lance Reddick, a staple of the John Wick franchise from the beginning, has passed away at just 60 years old.
TMZ reports, “Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Lance’s body was discovered at his Studio City home Friday morning around 9:30 Am. His cause of death is currently unclear, but our law enforcement sources say it appears to be natural.”
In addition to the John Wick movies, which saw him play the role of Charon – the fourth film will be released this year – Lance Reddick also recently appeared in Netflix’s short-lived “Resident Evil” television series, stealing the entire show as iconic character Albert Wesker. Reddick humorously ended up playing four different versions of the character in the series.

In 1989, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher starred in the film "Glory," directed by Edward Zwick. It was the story of the American Civil War's 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, which was one of the earliest Black regiments in the Union Army. It was based on the 1965 novel "One Gallant Rush" by Peter Burchard, the 1973 novel "Lay This Laurel" by Lincoln Kirstein, and the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the leader of the 54th.
In the film, Shaw gives the Black soldiers the option to walk away after they learn that the Confederacy responded to the Emancipation Proclamation by ordering all captured Black men to be returned to slavery. No one left. The regiment made a heroic stand at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, and not everyone made it out alive. Broderick played Shaw, Washington played Private Silas Trip, Morgan Freeman was Sergeant Major John Rawlins,...

Following the failure of 2013's "The Lone Ranger," The Atlantic published a piece by Michael Agresta about why the Western movie matters. It posited that Hollywood's recent offerings around that time misunderstood the genre's appeal and necessary themes. "For a century plus," Agresta writes, "we have relied on Westerns to teach us our history and reflect our current politics and our place in the world. We can ill afford to lose that mirror now, especially just because we don't like what we see staring back at us." Agresta wasn't wrong, but the Western he desired was underneath his nose — on television.

Rio Hackford, prominent club owner, actor and son of Oscar-winning filmmaker Taylor Hackford, has died. He was 51.
Friend of Hackford and screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Friday, and Hackford’s stepmother Helen Mirren also posted an image tribute on Saturday.
“Rio was more attuned to experience than anyone I’ve ever known. He would stop what was happening to point it out, compel you to pay attention,” Divincentis wrote. “He would order you a must-have experience from a beloved menu and hold your eye as you paid attention to what was happening in your mouth.”
“Not simply obsessed with movies and how they mirrored and compelled, he was something more: a superfan of enumerable scenes, of particular gestures of unsung actors, weird career turns, roaring comebacks, cinema swan songs — all real experiences for you, when beheld consciously,” Divincentis continued.

Even The Losers get lucky sometimes. Before the Dceu was formed to compete against the ever-expanding, cash cow that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the approach at Warner Bros. was far looser. With the booming business of comic book adaptations in full swing, the studio was throwing money at several eclectic comic book titles like Watchmen and Jonah Hex, trying to stay competitive and seemingly more adult than their rivals. Hence before leaving to create his own superhero project, Hancock, writer-director Peter Berg started penning an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Losers, bringing in French director Sylvain White to helm the picture.
Produced by Joel Silver, The Losers centered on a team of elite, black-ops Special Forces operatives betrayed by their handler. Director White connected with the material immediately.

Kino Lorber, in its relentless effort to make forgotten, hard-to-find films available in superior, like-new condition, has released a Blu-Ray edition of the 1959 Weird Western, “Curse of the Undead,” the first movie ever to mix cowboys and vampires. The Weird Western, in case you’re not aware, is a sub-genre that combines the traditional western with elements of the supernatural, horror, or science fiction. They’ve been around for about 90 years, first appearing in print in the 1930s when Robert E. Howard, a pulp fiction writer from Texas, best known as the creator of Conan the Barbarian, wrote several short stories for Weird Tales and Argosy magazine that combined the traditional western with supernatural horror. Today a number of authors including Joe Lansdale, Heath Lowrance, Jonathan Mayberry, David West and even yours truly, have turned out Weird Western novels and short stories,...

ABC is putting Keegan-Michael Key on the case. The comedian is set to executive-produce and star in a drama series based on Stephen Mack Jones’ August Snow crime novels, our sister site Deadline reports. The project has been given a script commitment plus penalty.
Jones, who is serving as a consulting producer, began publishing his August Snow series in 2018. When the character was first introduced, he was described as “tough, smart and struggling to stay alive … the embodiment of Detroit,” per the official description. “The son of an African-American father and a Mexican-American mother, August grew up in the city...

The Western used to be one of the biggest – if not the biggest – genres in Hollywood, with tons of A-list stars and acclaimed filmmakers getting in on the fun. Nowadays, of course, we don’t see too many Westerns anymore, though every once in a while a gem like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma or the True Grit remake will pop up and remind us of why they’re so enjoyable.
Of course, many modern takes on the genre have tried to put their own spin on the tropes as well, with everything from big budget blockbuster The Lone Ranger to disappointing comic book adaptation Jonah Hex and even the animated Rango all attempting something new. Which didn’t always work out, but it’s still nice to see filmmakers trying to apply a fresh coat of paint to one of Hollywood’s oldest genres.

The Western used to be the biggest and most popular genre in Hollywood, reigning supreme for decades as almost every A-list star and respected filmmaker journeyed to the Old West. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be as much interest in producing them as there used to be, but we have seen plenty of recent gems like Django Unchained, 3:10 to Yuma, the True Grit remake and Open Range.
Instead of taking the old-fashioned route, a lot of modern Westerns have also sought to put their own twist on the tropes of the genre to decidedly mixed results, whether it be action blockbuster The Lone Ranger, comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, the animated Rango, the blood-soaked Red Hill, the star-studded Magnificent Seven update or South Korean Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad, the Weird. All of them brought something interesting to the table, but not all were successful.

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

Tim Burton’s “Batman,” Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman” and the ensemble “Justice League” are amongst the DC Comics movies temporarily leaving HBO Max on July 1. Additionally, TheWrap has confirmed the other titles leaving the upstart streamer are “Justice League,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad, “Batman Returns,” “Batman Forever,” “Batman & Robin,” “Catwoman,” “Jonah Hex” and “The Losers.”
It was not immediately clear why the films will only be available for the first month of the new streaming service’s launch or when they might return.
HBO Max has a collection of DC movies that will rotate on the platform. A new batch coming in July and then another batch coming in August. And the batch that is on right now will be returning. More recent titles like “Aquaman,” “Shazam!,” “Joker,” and previous titles like “Green Lantern” and “Supergirl” will remain on the platform.
