I have a lot of fond memories playing Twisted Metal with my brothers on the original PlayStation in the mid-90s. It was just such an incredibly fun game that focused on vehicular combat, which included lots of explosions, gunfire, heavy metal, carnage, and the sounds of roaring motors.
There was actually a movie in development at one point with director Brian Taylor at the helm. He's one of the guys who directed films such as Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence. Both of those were extremely wild films and he wanted to bring his crazy high-octane style to Twisted Metal and he wanted to bring Nicolas Cage along for the ride. Seems like the perfect combination of talent for a film like Twisted Metal!
When talking about the project in an interview with Collider, Taylor said:

Fancy some graphic novels that don't involve a Marvel or DC hero? Try some of these...
You don't need to tell comic book and graphic novel fans that there's a whole lot more than superheroes out there. However, if you're just starting to dabble, might we make a few recommendations...?
Sweet Tooth
Put Mad Max in some plaid, make him feel a little Wolverine circa X-Men: Origins, add some creepy Wes Anderson stop-motion animals, and you’ll get Sweet Tooth, the post-apocalyptic story of human-animal hybrids in rural Nebraska. You may be familiar with Jeff Lemire’s other work on Animal Man and Green Lantern, or his acclaimed graphic novel Essex County, but for me, Sweet Tooth really is something special. Running from 2009 to 2013, this forty-issue arc centres around Gus, a young boy with antlers living with his strictly religious father in a world infected by some sort of plague.

Image Comics have released interior artwork from Royal City, a new ongoing monthly series written and illustrated by New York Times bestselling author Jeff Lemire (Descender, Sweet Tooth), which is set to launch in March 2017. Royal City promises to be a sprawling, serialized graphic novel that will chart the lives, loves, and losses of a troubled family and a vanishing town across three decades.
From the press release:
Royal City follows Patrick Pike, a fading literary star who reluctantly returns to the once-thriving factory town where he grew up and is quickly drawn back into the dramas of his two adult siblings, his overbearing mother and his brow-beaten father, all of whom are still haunted by different versions of his youngest brother, Tommy, who drowned decades ago.

A.D.: After Death, the acclaimed book from Image Comics, is getting a movie adaptation.
Scott Snyder (Wytches, Batman) and Jeff Lemire (Plutona, Extraordinary X-Men)'s Image Comics series A.D. After Death has been optioned as a movie by Sony Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The book, which jumps back and forth between illustrated prose sections and a traditional paneled comic book, with some stunning watercolor art from Lemire, follows Jonah Cooke 825 years after the cure for death was found. The series combines anxiety about real problems, like a family member's illness or money troubles, with an eerie seemingly post-apocalyptic setting that is a hallmark of Snyder's writing (if you haven't checked out Wytches or Voodoo Heart, Snyder's collection of short stories, treat yourself this Christmas).

Mark this down as the best news to hear on a Monday: Girl Scout Cookie-flavored cereal is imminent.
According to the junk food-obsessed Instagram account CandyHunting, General Mills has teamed up with Girl Scouts to release two flavors of cookie-inspired cereal in January 2017, proving to Americans that not all news in this grueling election year is bad news.
The cereal company has confirmed to Thrillist that both Thin Mints and Caramel Crunch (which replicate the flavor of Samoas) will be turned into cereal form, with more information coming closer to the launch date. All we can say is: Bring.

“Kill or Be Killed” (2015) aka “Red on Yella, Kill a Fella,” is a low budget horror-western released on DVD by Rlj Entertainment that also attempts to be a tribute to the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” The plot is about a gang of outlaws in the year 1900 traveling 500 miles through Texas to get to a stash of gold that’s hidden at the bottom of a well in the sand dunes of Galveston Beach. The group is hounded on their journey by a mysterious being and one by one the gang members get picked off.

Uncanny X-Men #600 has come and gone, leaving us with a newly out present day Iceman, joining his time travelled past version in being out. I already wrote up my feelings on this here last month. Since then, we’ve seen three issues of Extraordinary X-Men featuring the present day Iceman, and one issue of All New X-Men featuring the past Iceman. If you haven’t read them yet, you may be thinking that surely in at least one of those four issues that have come out that at least one mention of Iceman’s sexuality would have come up.
Spoiler Alert: It hasn’t. Not even once.
I was hoping we’d see something right away. Even if it was a quick scene. As I was reading the first issue of Extraordinary X-Men, I’m picturing Iceman coming into Storm’s office to talk to her about it, which seems...

The companion robot Tim-21, his creator Dr. Quon, and the rest of the supporting cast for writer Jeff Lemire and artist Dustin Nguyen’s Descender will return on Nov. 11 with issue #7.
“The reception to the book has been overwhelming, and it fuels us to keep pushing ourselves to live up to the promise of arc one and even surpass it,” said Lemire via email interview
Descender began in March of this year and came out monthly until August, at which point the series took a break in between story arcs. In the first issue of the series, a group of robots later referred to as The Harvesters attacked the major worlds of a futuristic science-fiction universe, which led to widespread hate of robot-kind.
After a series of killings of robots by those consumed with hate, the government is excited to find Tim-21, who is not just a robot who hasn’t been killed,...

The best of the bunch in this anthology of vaguely interconnected shorts are the outrageous and uproarious genre pastiches “Friday the 31st” and “Bad Seed.” I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not impressed by most movies labeled “horror”
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Most horror movies don’t usually do much for me — I tend not to find gore frightening — and the ones that are supposed to be funny typically do even less: I tend not to find gore funny, either. But the little packages of horror and horror comedy that make up the new anthology Tales of Halloween offer among them a few gems that made me laugh out loud or shiver with their creepy atmosphere.
The ten stories here are vaguely interconnected: they’re meant to be occurring in the same Los Angeles neighborhood on the same Halloween night,...

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Writer/director Dave Parker has been part of the horror scene for many years, coming up through Charles Band’s Full Moon Features (where he directed his first feature, The Dead Hate the Living!) before going on to direct the excellent The Hills Run Red and ColdWater. His short “Sweet Tooth” kicks off Tales of Halloween in terrific fashion with real Halloween atmosphere, gore, and wickedly dark humor. Parker talks about the origins of his cautionary tale, the casting of some beloved genre stars and the pressures of going first.
So you know you’re going to be making this anthology with your filmmaking friends and you know you have free reign to do whatever you want. Where do...

Tales Of Halloween is the latest contender to challenge Trick ‘r Treat‘s beloved status as “Numero Uno Halloween Horror Anthology,” and it’s an admirable effort at that. Opting for ten shorter stories from eleven different filmmakers, Tales Of Halloween plays like an old-fashioned radio show that would have been aired on October 31st for those souls who dare not adventure outside. This means each short only runs about ten minutes, calling back to The ABCs Of Death’s more challenging, rapid-fire structure. There are clear winners among these haunted efforts, but the likes of Darren Lynn Bousman, Neil Marshall, Mike Mendez, Lucky McKee, and other indie favorites ensure that their “October Society” rings in Halloween with ample thrills, gore, and good-natured laughs.
The shorts all share a connective bond, as you’ll see certain characters wandering around numerous entries, along with a host of famous faces who bring their cameo stamp-of-approval.

Mike Mendez is best known as the director of films like The Convent, The Gravedancers, Big Ass Spider! and, most recently, the horror comedy Lavalantula for Syfy. He’s both a producer and a director on Tales of Halloween, contributing the ’80s slasher-inspired “Friday the 31st.”
This project started with you and Axelle Carolyn, right?
Mike Mendez: It’s Axelle’s concept and she’s the one who got the ball rolling. She told a few of us about it, and I brought in Epic Pictures and got it financed. From that point on, it’s been Axelle’s and my burden to bear, for better or worse. A very fun burden to bear.

Next spring, a fresh take on Marc Spector will hit the shelves in Moon Knight #1, and today Marvel gave us a look at the first issue of the new ongoing series from Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood:
Press Release: New York, NY—September 28th, 2015 — Marc Spector has been defending New York City for years as the masked vigilante known as Moon Knight. Or has he? Waking up in an insane asylum shakes that confidence. Turns out he’s been institutionalized since he was a child. But that can’t be true. Can it? Today, Marvel is pleased to announce Moon Knight #1 – the brand new series coming next year from creators Jeff Lemire (Extraordinary X-Men, Sweet Tooth) and Greg Smallwood (Moon Knight)!
His mind is full of identities, and he no longer knows which is real. Now residing in a mental health facility, his thoughts are clouded and he has no idea what to believe.

As a devoted lover of the current indie horror scene, there is no horror movie I was anticipating more this year than Tales of Halloween, an anthology film with contributions from 11 of the strongest voices working in the genre today. This is my event film. This is my Avengers. And it does not disappoint. Tales of Halloween isn’t just one of the best anthologies of the last 30 years, but also among the best Halloween-themed horror movies ever made. It’s funny and bloody and wicked and affectionate towards the genre in a way that few other films are. It’s the most fun I’ve had at a horror movie in a long, long time.
Taking place all on the same Halloween night, Tales offers up ten stories of slashers, aliens, killer kids, monsters, ghosts, witches, and the devil as played by Barry Bostwick. The list of talent...

Set to release on Sept. 2 from Image Comics is Jeff Lemire and Emi Lenox’s Plutona, a miniseries about a rag-tag group of five kids who bump into the dead body of a famous superhero.
“The book isn’t so much about the superhero as it is the kids who find her. It’s about how this discovery, and the decision they make, starts to affect their lives and their friendship,” said writer Lemire via email interview. “It’s a very grounded story told from these kids’ point of view.”
Lemire isn’t new to superheroes, stories focused on kids, or original creator-owned work. He has worked on books like Animal Man and Justice League United for DC Comics, Sweet Tooth for DC Comics’ Vertigo line, and Descender, an ongoing comic for Image Comics that was picked up by Sony for an upcoming film adaptation.

It may only be July, but it can take a while to get in just the right mood for certain annual festivities. So, thank goodness for the early arrival of a trailer for Tales Of Halloween – an anthology horror movie featuring ten different segments, directed by eleven different directors.
“Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only, to terrorise unsuspecting residents.”
In many respects, an advantage of a horror anthology is the fact that it allows for many filmmakers to showcase their work, giving the whole project a fascinating blend of flavours. However, what is notable about Tales Of Halloween, is that – despite – featuring the work of very individual directors, there is an overall tone that snakes through each one, making it feel very much like part of a larger whole.

Remember when car combat games were all the rage and a new Twisted Metal was coming out every six months? Neither do I, since that genre always relied on niche appeal. However, one thing that most gamers remember from the series was Sweet Tooth, the maniacal ice cream truck driving clown who served as an unofficial mascot. Fans looking forward to Psyonix’s upcoming action-sports title Rocket League will be seeing more of the killer clown when he makes a cameo this July.
Exclusively on the PlayStation 4, Sweet Tooth will be just one driver available in the hybrid car-combat/soccer title. This upgraded Rocket League will gjve players the chance to enjoy a single-player Season mode as well as the returning multiplayer mayhem for both online and on-the-couch play.

Descender #2
Written by Jeff Lemire
Art by Dustin Nguyen
Published by Image Comics
The first issue of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s Descender left a lot to be desired. Most jarringly was the similarity it bore to Lemire’s previous Sweet Tooth series, both books feature central characters that are a jaded man fallen from grace and a young naive boy whose very existence is a social taboo in the midst of a quasi-apocalyptic setting. That’s more than enough reason to raise a little concern, but fortunately this latest issue dismisses with them, telling a moving in-the-moment story despite some hang-ups from some of Lemire’s writing tropes.
The story follows Tim-21, a child-like android built to function as a friend/sibling to young children. Unknown to him, he’s slept through a ten year long conflict between robots and the sentient peoples across space, and happens to...

It's a well-known fact that robots and space travel are two great tastes that taste great together. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Wall-e, Spaceballs … all these narratives would be made much poorer if you had a machine-free cosmos or automatons who merely wandered around Earth. This week, a gorgeous new story enters the canon of galactic tales featuring androids: Image Comics' Descender. The monthly series will follow the exploits of Tim-21, a robot built in the image of a young boy, as he tries to escape bounty hunters and other dangers. It's penned by superstar writer Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Trillium) and drawn in fantastic watercolor by Dustin Nguyen (Li'l Gotham, Justice League Beyond). It's a big week in general for Lemire, because we'll also see the debut of his run on Marvel's high-profile series All-New Hawkeye. We caught up with Lemire and Nguyen to talk about gadgets,...

While most of the most iconic vehicles that we know and love originated in film, TV, and comics, gaming has started to carve out its own pantheon of killer rides. So with that, let's get to my (and I do emphasize my, here) top ten best rides in gaming.
Halo: The Ghost
If you say "Halo," two vehicles will undoubtedly come up: The Warthog and the Ghost. While the Warthog might more popular, the Ghost is the better vehicle. Its silky smooth controls and accompanying plasma cannons make this my go-to vehicle in a game full of great options (one of which we'll get to later in this list). While not the most durable, its agility more than makes up for it.

Animal Man: The Hunt
Written by Jeff Lemire
Art by Travel Foreman, Jeff Huet, Steve Pugh, & John Paul Leon
Published by DC Comics
Jeff Lemire’s Animal Man stands out as one of the strongest books from the early days of the New 52. The story follows the titular Animal Man, a.k.a. Buddy Baker, a former stuntman, turned father, turned superhero, turned animal rights activist. His powers were granted when aliens experimented on him and gave Buddy Baker access to a morphogenetic field entwined with all animal life on Earth from which he can draw many abilities: the reflexes of a fly, the strength of a rhinoceros, and many more.
As he’s introduced, much of Buddy’s superheroing has taken a backseat to being a devoted father and husband, dealing with family finances more than street criminals. That all changes when his four year old daughter, Maxine, starts...

Near Death is one of the spate of high-quality comic books Image has been cranking out over the past couple of years, and I finally did myself the favor of reading it. Of course, now it appears the series has gone on hiatus just as I am getting on board (sad trombone). Fingers crossed that it starts up again and soon, but in the meantime, Near Death is a nice little jumping-off point for talking about comics for comics’ sake.
As life-long and deeply devoted supporter of the medium, I often bristle at the crossover into other media. Case in point: I work a couple days a week down at my local comics shop, which is next to a Papa John’s franchise. A couple years back, one of the pizzeria employees ducked her head in, as she would, and asked us if we had seen the new Ghost Rider movie.
