Patty and Cathy have both been nominated for president of the girls league. They both speak more favorably of the other and wish to drop out. Martin and Natalie, however, feel they have responsibility to run. The more Patty and Cathy talk they lose their "unselfish" politeness and turn into bitter opponents. The two outline their platforms for the students. They are running against a lackadaisical third candidate, Susan Baxter (Joyce Richardson) whose platform is a repeated "vote for me". Patty and Cathy set up their own headquarters in the house. Cathy pays Ross 50 cents a day to rent his room as her headquarters. Patty pays Ross $1 to spy on Cathy and get all the information he can, and he asks Cathy to be a counterspy. Through Ross' espionage Cathy beats Patty to her own campaign slogan, "Take the right Lane". A straw ballot reveals Patty is leading voters 50 percent to Cathy's 30, with 15 percent voting for Susan and five percent for Rock Hudson. Ted (Skip Hinnant) advises Cathy to hold a debate. Patty and Cathy prepare their material with Ross taping both and getting a payoff from each to play what the other said. The debate promises to be a bitter battle and anticipation grows for the election results.
