Brutal Honesty
captspastic1 August 2020
This show is amazing. Amy Schumer really puts it all out there, in a frank, sometimes painfully honest story of the very real side of pregnancy and exactly why mom's believe & know THEY OWN YOU! Really is a wonderful, touching show about the not so glamorous side of pregnancy and what it takes.

This is funny. But that's about it.
timmyhollywood10 June 2021
Amy Schumer has made a career out of oversharing. I mean, duh, isn't that what comedians do? Guys talk about their b*lls, Amy talks about her p*ssy; it's all good. I have to admit I've enjoyed her later stuff more, like the Netflix special that's at the center of this three-part miniseries about Schumer's pregnancy, her hyperemesis, and -- to a lesser extent -- her autistic-spectrum husband, Chris. That special felt more well-rounded than the usual sets about promiscuity. (Funnily enough, Schumer herself comments in one of the episodes that critics never review her single work, but always her body of work. Here I am, internet troll, doing the same thing...)

This miniseries is funny. I was constantly laughing. I love Amy's sense of humor and her sisters, all the comedians who surround her -- what's not to like? And, absolutely, my heart went out to her for enduring such a torturous pregnancy. It's not that the oversharing is a problem -- seeing Amy vomit all the time wasn't gratuitous; she was that sick! And seeing her frequently naked, and frequently looking pale and unwell, and seeing her in the hospital having the baby -- I get why people say it's brave, and I have no quarrel with any of her choices in life. Why would I? It's her life.

But a documentary is a *thing*, it's a piece of media, one might even call it art, and we're allowed to critique it for its mechanics, for what it is, for what it does. Despite its unabashed sharing -- or perhaps, counterintuitively, *because* of it -- the documentary keeps Amy insulated. And it keeps us at a distance. The sharing of her trauma and all the sickness *almost* feels like something to distract us. Is she really cracking jokes the whole time she's puking? Why is her sister always there -- what does she do? Why does Amy suddenly make the choice she does at the end? That part felt rushed and glossed over. I also got the sense that Amy has this entourage around her constantly, and is a bottomless pit of attention-seeking, but that's probably to be expected.

What the doc does well is show how Schumer, and probably most comedians, build a show. The cross-cutting between her daily life and the use of that daily-life-derived material on stage was great. Comedians are amazing, we need them more than ever, and Amy Schumer is one of the really good ones.

A documentary, though, ought to reveal its subjects somewhat objectively, without protecting them. Amy and her husband Chris are both producers here, capture all the footage themselves, and though there's some other dude listed as the director, I know Schumer controlled every aspect of this. That's not what the old greats, like Al Maysles, would call "direct cinema." This is not Grey Gardens. This is like one big long Instagram video that Schumer tightly controlled.

7/10.

An honest narrative of a relationship during pregnancy
kathywilliamsbryson15 August 2020
Superb - experiencing Amy Schumer entering a new phase of the lifespan, bonding with a partner on the spectrum (many wonderful aspects of Asperger's as well as challenges) while gestating with Hyperemesis - the honesty is wonderful.

You'll have a new found respect for Amy!
genreilly24 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This docuseries focuses on Amy's difficult pregnancy in a very raw and honest way. I had NO idea she went through what she did PLUS she toured during it all. This really opened my eyes to what some women can go through when pregnant and it isn't always rainbows and butterflies.

The show also briefly touched on Amy and Chris's relationship and their lives when growing up. It made me really love them as a couple.

I love Amy Schumer, but I have even more respect for her after watching this show. She's a badass.

Fabulous - thank you!

Warning: Spoilers
I haven't watched Amy Schumer's stand up, and I've only seen one of her films. I've heard she's a controversial character that has been subject to negative press. Well, after watching this docu series I can safely say I am now a huge fan. I popped it on during a night of insomnia, hoping I would drop off to sleep, and I ended up watching it all. Well structured, honest insight into her very difficult pregnancy. What an incredible, resilient woman. To see her push on through her shows and commitments was inspiring. The personal insights into Chris's Aspergers were also well handled and informative. I'm shocked to see people coming on here to mark positive reviews down. This is a wonderful programme. Fabulous!

Real, Unfiltered Version of Some Pregnancies
adriennehussey11 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure why this is only a 5.9 right now as this was 10/10 for me. It had a good amount of laughter at the beginning of the series, and as the pregnancy continued (along with her sickness) you could only appreciate what a woman's body will endure for children. Aside from Amy's sickness, she showed just how unstoppable she was by working and making a Netflix special during the first half of her pregnancy. I have nothing but appreciation for her raw footage she and Chris caught. The last 25 minutes of the third episode was just me crying like a baby. Highly recommend!

Real funny and real life
rebeccachazcat10 July 2020
I have always liked Amy's humor and appreciate that she brings crassness and reality to the female form and experience. This three part documentary takes you on her path of pregnancy, marriage and career. Getting a peek inside her relationship with her husband is touching. What I love about her outlook is it's raw honesty, especially about being female. So much is not talked about in society or even amongst women when it comes to pregnancy, birth and the body. Some might hate how much she shares and shows but I find it refreshing and human. Honestly, if a man Showed his body as much as she does in this special, it probably wouldn't phase people. I think she is brave for putting her real life out there and I hope others will resonate with it instead of bash it.

why?
harobike22 December 2021
Who asked for this? Are there really people out there who have a need to watch something like this?

The amy schumer expiriment was clearly a failure, why is the hollywood machine still pushing her onto the public, the people have spoken, away with her.

Brilliant Insight Into the Process of Creating Stand-Up Comedy
muffintoprescue9 August 2020
What a lot of reviewers who have posted here don't seem to have grasped is that although this is undoubtedly a raw and real depiction of Amy Schumer's very difficult pregnancy and the birth of her child, moreover it is an allegory for a woman's process as a comedian. The first two episodes of the series focus far more intensely on Amy's creation of a new set of material that leads up to her stand-up special "Growing," and how that material changes, shifts and improves as her real life experience as an expectant mother and new wife to a man with austism influences her writing. In fact the first few acts of "Expecting Amy" are broken down with chapter titles of the phases of pregnancy that are actually referring to the process of writing her comedy show, leading up to "Giving Birth", when the show finally debuts.

The insight into her creative process is quite honestly a master class in stand-up comedy, and as this part of her professional life gives way to the birth of her son, the tone shifts in the third episode. But make no mistake: the series shows that a woman can have a career and a family on her own terms, and it's one of the most moving and brilliant documentaries on the subject.

Thank you Amy and Chris
moonmark-5281712 July 2020
Candid, brutally honest and as authentic as you'll find. It's not about her comedy, it's about a part of her and Chris' (and Gene's) journey through very challenging times. The last hour of the film I was crying especially at the birth. And I applaud Amy for sharing her puking. Thank you for some life affirming moments in these trying times. Bless you and yours.

Real, Raw, Honest and Important
jipushi12 July 2020
Ignore the trolls who will rate this as 1 without watching. This was an exceptional short series with genuine insights on complications women can experience which are so often not spoken about. Chris shows all the trolls what a real man is too, what an amazing husband. Thank you for sharing this with the world.

all i can think as i watch this is...
christiancarden31 October 2020
How much of this is stolen material? i'd wager not much, as it is boring and the humor can be described as low hanging fruit at best. Amy looks horrible, she's not fun to watch in the slightest, if anything she is the worst part of her own show. other "actors" at least get me to care about what happening to them, but every scene i'm disappointed to not see a bus flatten amy. her stand-up is all stolen material, her show was all stolen material, why TF would hbo give her a penny?! bye bye hbomax, i'm switching to amazon, i won't support companies that support IP theft.

Losers rate this movie less than a 10
kraelodz14 February 2021
The people giving Amy bad reviews on this doc are your typical trolls who have nothing better to do with their sad time than put her down for her raw and honest work. Amy, you're a true hero and the vulnerability you showed in this piece of art proves it.

It's me
rmkellync22 April 2021
I rated it 3 bc I didn't enjoy it. The other person watching with me loved it. So, ya. I think Amy's funny, I've watched her career with interest and wondered where she'd "disappeared" to in the post movie era. I hate the low score reviews who can't say anything but "she's gross." I just didn't relate to the subject matter and thought it was too slow. It has some GREAT laughs in it. Just wasn't for me.

Love Amy. It was so nice to go along for the ride. Hard worker. The only thing that bothered me was how her husband goes to bathroom outside! He's by the house, but no....

katelarson-6927729 April 2021
My husband and I are 9 weeks pregnant and Amy's saga taught me a lot while also cackling. Very grateful to not have such complications so far and have the utmost respect for her and all working, expecting moms. Loved getting to know Chris, what a sweetheart. It had my husband getting emotional as he realized "thats going to be us soon."

Unbelievably true
annaosetroff4 July 2022
As a fellow HG sufferer who also had a c-section, I needed this documentary. It's perfect. It's raw, honest and funny. Hyperemesis is no joke but Amy made light of her traumatic experience and sometimes laugher is all we have to get us through. Fantastic!

Mad Respect For Amy Schumer
tbabe2919 December 2022
Wow! Talk about "the show must go on!". I watched this docu-series last night and am still processing it. Amy Schumer works so hard at what she does AND she's pregnant and super sick at the same time? I confess I don't watch alot of her stand-up (don't think I'm her target audience), but her work ethic is off the charts. She is so brutally honest and vulnerable throughout this series which makes it captivating and refreshing to watch. And yes, she's funny, but most importantly, she's real. 9/10 - only because in the third chapter, once the tour ends, the pace slows down a little bit. I originally started watching this because I will watch anything Kevin Kane is in, but Amy won me over.
