- Tears are shed as our couples realise just how hard Block life is. Has Scotty set an unrealistic challenge? Will Neale Whitaker, Darren Palmer and Shaynna Blaze have any finished rooms to judge?
- The fifteenth season of Australian reality television series The Block premiered on August 4, 2019. Hosts Scott Cam and Shelley Craft, site foreman Keith Schleiger with Dan Reilly, and judges Neil Whitaker, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer, all returned from the previous season. This year contestants are renovating a rundown backpackers accommodation, Oslo Hotel, in St Kilda, Victoria.
- We kick off the episode with the soundtrack of Green Day's 'Time of Your Life', which feels a touch ominous. The Blockheads are scrambling to complete a guest bedroom and en suite in just over a week, with the bedroom the first to be revealed. Everyone wants to win the safe, which host Scott Cam hinted is full of vouchers and cash that basically give the lucky owners a massive leg up in the competition. St Kilda locals Jesse and Mel decided to throw everything at their first room in a bid to win at all costs, which essentially means completely ignoring the en suite for now. It's a gamble and honestly, it's a good one. Comedian Andy is focused on time saving and has opted to forfeit showering. "I smell like a dead kangaroo that's been on the side of the road for three months," he claims and we're thankful this is not a 4D sensory experience. Cairns newlyweds Tess and Luke have an issue with the size of their bedside cabinets so they've ripping things out to fix the problem, adding 24 hours to their build time. The decision is a bold one and it pushes Tess to breaking point. It occurs to us there could have been an easier solution here but who are we to judge? Flustered with how much she has to do, Tess decides to race around The Block trying to find her missing downlights. "Someone's got [them]," she fumes. "We'll have no lights in our bedroom!" After sneaking through the other houses in a bid to find them, she discovers that her lights are in Perth couple Matt and El'ise's house while they realise she has theirs. Pushed to the brink after the Great Light Fiasco of 2019, Matt gets really snappy. El'ise blasts him and said he's "looking like a sook" and accuses him of being hangry. "Have you eaten?" she asked. "I'll make you a meal." But Matt is broken. Not only has he been accused of stealing lights, his plastering has been delayed and he's now leaning dejectedly over the scaffolding. It's all very intense but after a large coffee, Matt regroups, his blood sugar levels restored. They also manage to find plasterers willing to work through the night to finish their room. In fact, this week all comes down to plaster in the end - and while Andy's woes may be solved, Luke and Tess and Andy and Deb all realise their plaster won't be dry in time for them to paint. It's over. They just can't finish their rooms in time. "It just went downhill so bloody quick," says Luke. The episode is full of tears from Tess weeping that she feels like she's not cut out for The Block, while Mitch and Mark well up in admiration of their relationship. The first challenge is so big the phrase "no one gave up" becomes the new yardstick for success. Only two teams manage to finish. Three rooms are judged tonight. Mitch and Mark's guest bedroom wows the judges with their use of colour and the fact they have created a suave suite that Frank Sinatra would swoon over. Tess and Luke brand their room a "s---show". The judges are less harsh, although Shaynna Blaze is underwhelmed by their young, Scandi-ish style, and the fact the pair have merged Modern, Provincial, Edwardian and Deco styles. "There's eclectic and then there's just mixing the wrong styles," she says. Deb and Andy have gone too boho and not enough glam with their coastal vibe and the withered eucalyptus hanging from a tiny wooden coat hook causes judge Neale Whitaker to visibly shudder. A bit of muslin draped around and some more luxe and these two will be back on track - minus the dried eucalyptus.
