When the origin of the twins is revealed, Rock tells the story of "a dictator" who banned abortion claiming it was a crime against the future of the country, when he actually wanted a larger and more obedient work force, really resulting in a huge amount of children abandoned and even sold to the organized crime. This information is accurate: the dictator in question was Romanian president Nicolae Ceausescu, who was toppled from power and eventually executed in 1989. To this date, much of the human trafficking in some parts of Eastern Europe are directly linked to his measures.
The nursing rhyme the twins are singing, before being seen covered in blood by Verrochio's goons, is an obscure reference to The Almond Tree, possibly the darkest of all the Brother Grimm's tales. In it, the son of widower is beheaded by his evil stepmother, who later blames his own daughter, cooks the body as a stew, and feeds it to the family. Unknownly, the father eats his son and drops the bones under the table, and his stepdaughter buries them.
