Beautifully observed, funny and poignant gem of a short film
fgowen16 January 2008
It's been a while since we've had a film on the ecstasy years, and this subverts the genre delightfully, with the story of an elderly couple who accidentally acquire some Es, and life on Wednesdays takes on a very different hue from their former dreary and predictable pattern.

Warm, witty and empathetic, it captures in sparse dialogue and carefully observed detail the long-standing mutual acceptance, comforting structure and pathos of everyday life for an elderly long-married couple, and how that changes for a brief period of their lives.

The characters are played with marvellous low-key, humorous, yet sympathetic, performances by an excellent cast. The film is shot with a clever use of colour and speed to evoke the moods of the film. This mood is further underscored by an eclectic soundtrack mixing country and western and acid house. A near perfect gem!
