Half-pipe skating, new cars, penthouses, Baby Shelby and window blinds

Love animation to bits. It was a big part of my life as a child, especially Disney, Looney Tunes, Hanna Barbera and Tom and Jerry, and still love it as a young adult, whether it's film, television or cartoons. Actually appreciate it even more now, having more knowledge of the different animation styles and directors and what work went into them.

Am most familiar with the 'Mickey Mouse Works' cartoons from them featuring on 'House of Mouse', a show still held a fondness for by me. With the colours and sound effects, that 'Mickey Mouse Works' makes a real effort to retain the spirit of the old/classic/golden age Disney cartoons is to be lauded. The characters' original personalities are admirably stuck true to as well, particularly Goofy and Donald, while also expanding those for a few, Mickey being more interesting here than before. The hyperactive energy present here is one of few things that is different.

'Skating on the Half-Pipe' is amusing and quite interesting, Goofy is interesting as ever and Corey Burton voices the narration beautifully. Other "Extreme Sports" cartoons are funnier and more educational though.

'Mickey's New Car' is a good situation for Mickey and is very enjoyable for the cool temperamental car with its inventive and envious gadgets and such. It is also a situation one can relate to.

'Penthouse Sweet' is not what one will call a hilarious cartoon, but it is incredibly charming and cute and the conflict with the bulldog does amuse. Pluto and his love interest are adorable characters here individually and their chemistry is even more so.

'Donald's Shell Shots' shows off Donald's classic cantankerous temperament perfectly and one feels sorry for him, what he goes through here is pretty brutal. There are a lot of clever and funny gags and really enjoy the chemistry between him and Baby Shelby, who is a pest but one with great comic timing. The cartoon is only undone by the annoying character of Mrs Turtle and Estelle Harris' gratingly overdone voice-acting.

While not surprising in outcome, the stories are lively and engaging, kept afloat by the character interaction, characters and the atmosphere. The writing is clever and very funny, even with the deliberately corny moment and pun which made me grin rather than groan.

Really enjoy the spontaneous flow of the episode and Donald's spotlight stealing/accident with the window blind is very funny indeed, if not the funniest of the series.

Furthermore, the animation is very colourful, smooth in movement and with some meticulous detail. The music is suitably groovy, jaunty and cleverly used.

Voice acting is very good with some of the best voice actors in the business involved. Wayne Allwine, Bill Farmer and Tony Anselmo are more than worthy successors to Walt Disney/James MacDonald, Pinto Colvig and Clarence "Ducky" Nash. Corey Burton narrates 'Skating the Half-Pipe' beautifully, entertaining and teaching. As said, the one exception is Estelle Harris.

Overall, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox

As the picture of Don the Duck on this page attests . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . NOBODY wants to see such a foul water bird in the altogether. Yet, somehow, this not so wise quack-er turns up in his birthday suit TWICE during DONALD'S SHELL SHOTS. Don the Duck's outings in the Mouse Works series often substitute sensationalism for substance. The glaring lack of hilarity is a major fault in the career of this increasing dirty bird. Viewers half expect him to turn up as a "guest star" in the next Fritz the Cat revival. And it's unlikely to be a pretty sight.
