C.J. Snare, founding singer of the long-running hair metal band FireHouse, has died at the age of 64.
The group — which scored Hot 100 hits in the early Nineties with the singles “Love of a Lifetime” and “When I Look Into Your Eyes” — revealed Snare’s death Sunday on social media.
“Today is a sad day for Rock N Roll,” the surviving members wrote. “It is with great sorrow we are letting the world know we have lost our brother: Cj Snare, the rock and roll warrior, lead vocalist, and a founding member of Firehouse.

Jen Psaki has a message Monday night for conservatives endorsing the conspiracy theory that Taylor Swift is a Democratic plant ahead of the 2024 presidential election: “Shake it off!”
The MSNBC journalist opened an “Inside With Jen Psaki” segment on Swift’s history in politics by breaking down how the biggest pop star in the world went from being “notably and publicly apolitical” in 2018 to a figure that some conservatives, including Fox News’ Jesse Watters and former GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, propose to be a nefarious operative to get President Joe Biden to a second term.
Such theories come not only after her omnipresent popularity in pop culture and beyond with her Eras tour last year, but also in her support of LGBTQ Americans through the Equality Act, her endorsement of Biden in 2020 and her raising the alarm on the impact of overturning Roe vs. Wade in 2022.

Fox News and MSNBC saw slight viewership increases in primetime in the month of January as the 2024 primary season got underway, although the whole contest may be short-lived given Donald Trump’s sweep of Iowa and New Hampshire and Joe Biden’s nominal opposition.
Fox News topped the month with an average of 1.98 million viewers in seven-night primetime, a 2% increase from the same month a year ago, while MSNBC averaged 1.09 million, up 4%, and CNN posted 605,000, down 4%.
In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 219,000, down 8%, compared to CNN with 124,000, down 14%, and MSNBC with 106,000, off by 3%.
In total day, Fox News averaged 1.25 million, down 7%, compared to MSNBC with 761,000, up 8%, and CNN with 463,000, down 12%. In the total-day demo, Fox News averaged 149,000, down 14%, compared to CNN with 86,000, down 20% and MSNBC with 77,000, down 1%.

Fox News’ latest insane conspiracy theory is that Taylor Swift is being used as a Pentagon “psyop” to swing young voters towards Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election. No, really.
Tuesday night’s (January 9th) episode of Jesse Watters Primetime aired a clip from what host Watters insinuated was a recent meeting between the Pentagon and NATO to discuss online misinformation: “Social influence can help encourage or promote behavior change,” said the woman presenting in the clip. “So, potentially as a peaceful information operation… I include Taylor Swift in here because she’s, you know, a fairly influential online person.”
“Yeah, that’s real,” Watters said after the clip ended. “Pentagon’s psyop unit pitched NATO on turning Taylor Swift into an asset.” As Newsweek points out, however, the clip was actually from a 2019 cyber security conference organized by NATO — before Swift even endorsed Biden in the 2020 election.

Because the Primetime Emmys and the DGA Awards are operating on two different schedules, nominations often have little overlap. However, with the Director Guild of America (DGA) coincidentally releasing the TV nominations for its DGA Awards the same week as the postponed 75th Primetime Emmys, it’s become even more noticeable the ways in which the two awards bodies aligned and differed on shows from 2023.
For instance, DGA Awards favorite “Succession” once again dominates the Drama Series category, receiving four nominations (one less than the last time the show was eligible). While the guild was on the same page about honoring directors Andrij Parekh and Mark Mylod (a past winner) for their work on the fourth and final season of the HBO awards juggernaut, DGA voters opted to recognize Becky Martin and duo Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman for their “Succession” Season 4 episodes over Lorene Scafaria, the show’s...

Jo Koy probably won’t be back as Golden Globes host in 2025, but whatever his future may hold, good luck hiring writers after Sunday’s staff was thrown under the Greyhound.
With the Golden Globes still recovering from scandal, Koy faced an uphill battle. The wounds are so fresh that some winners thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association; the HFPA was disbanded over a lack of diversity. The Globes didn’t even have a real ceremony in 2022, but returned to TV last year.
Koy’s opening monologue was weak. (IndieWire TV critic Ben Travers called it “a catastrophe;” our Proma Khosla went with “lukewarm.”) Even weaker were his multiple attempts to save face.
From the start, it was clear that Koy was out of his element. Comics who sell out theaters, like Koy, are used to performing for people who specifically paid to see them. This room was not that.

The NBA’s in-season tournament accomplished exactly what the league was hoping when the initiative was announced this summer.
That is, it injected some excitement into the regular season and ginned up the NBA’s ratings in the process. The Los Angeles Lakers brought home the inaugural championship trophy on Saturday, as well as $500,000 for each player, after a 123-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers.
In return, the NBA raked in 4.58M viewers on ABC and ESPN2, making it the most-watched game during the regular season in nearly six years (since February 2018), excluding Christmas Day.
According to Nielsen, viewership peaked around 11 p.m. Et with nearly 5.7M viewers. The audience average was up 46% versus last year’s NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC season debut game between the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors, which would be the comparable window since the in-season tournament is new.

Almost exactly one year after HBO Max returned to Prime Video, Max is now also available on YouTube’s streaming hub as well.
There was a time when the erstwhile streaming service known as HBO Max was pulled from non-company-owned platforms in an effort by WarnerMedia to keep all of the streaming revenue (and data) generated from the service to itself. After 5 million people reportedly signed up for the service via Prime Video Channels following its May 2020 launch, HBO Max left Prime Video in August 2021. However, after WarnerMedia was acquired by Discovery in spring 2022, the service returned to the streaming hub almost exactly one year ago.
On Tuesday, it was announced that HBO Max’s successor Max has now found itself on another streaming aggregator, YouTube’s Primetime Channels. The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer will be available for a la carte subscriptions beginning on Friday, Dec. 15. Primetime Channels allows consumers...

Taylor Swift is good for the NFL. And that comes from someone who should know.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell appeared on CBS Mornings today to talk about all things football heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, and the subject inevitably turned to Swift and her high-profile (if still officially unconfirmed) romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Praising Swift as an “unbelievable artist” and Kelce an “unbelievable player,” Goodell told CBS Mornings co-host and ex-NFLer Nate Burleson: “Listen, they’re happy. They seem to be enjoying their relationship. That’s great in and of itself. But it has connected more fans of Taylor’s and more fans of the NFL in some ways. To see that they have a connection, now they have a connection to our game and to Taylor. … I think it’s great for the league to have that kind of attention. So we welcome it.

Coming of age in the world of professional musicians is another feat unto itself.
Documentary “Pianoforte,” which premiered at Sundance 2023, follows talented young musicians as they compete in the International Chopin Piano Competition, which is held every five years in Warsaw, Poland. “Pianoforte” is directed by “Prime Time” helmer Jakub Piatek and debuted in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
Per the official synopsis, the film charts the “highest highs and lowest lows for this select group of musicians as the competition unfolds. The film is both a testament to the remarkable power of music and an intimate coming-of-age portrait.”

By this time nearly every year, the Primetime Emmys are in the rearview mirror and Golden Globe and SAG film/TV season is in full swing. But this is clearly not every year. It appears that the Emmys won’t be budging off their rescheduled date of January 15, 2024 even if the SAG-AFTRA strike is settled soon. This means that they’ll be shoehorned in after the Golden Globes (January 7) and the Critics Choice Awards (January 14), with the SAG Awards set for February 24 (presuming SAG-AFTRA has long since been settled by then).
Of course, the Globes as of this writing also remain an awards ceremony without a broadcast or streaming partner after airing live on NBC and streamed on Peacock early this year, having been an NBC staple since 1996. That can and should still change before January. The submission website is about to open for Globe film and TV entries today,...

Exclusive: Creatives behind Estonia – one of Scandinavia’s most expensive drama series of all time – have opened up about the ethical issues surrounding a show spotlighting a tragedy that claimed the lives of 850 people.
Director Måns Månsson, whose past credits include Chernobyl and Snabba Cash, described the cruiseferry’s sinking as a “total national trauma” that needed to be approached with the utmost sensibility, given that authorities are still investigating 30 years on.
“We Scandinavians tend not to be involved with wars so rarely have loss of life on this scale,” he told Deadline, as the show distributed by Beta Film and made by several indies for a number of European networks prepares for launch at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Primetime program.
With budget estimated at around €15M ($16.4M) across eight episodes, Estonia (see an exclusive clip below) charts what happened after midnight on September 28 1994 when a catastrophic storm...

Donald Trump’s multiple indictments helped propel MSNBC to significant viewership gains during the month of August, while its rivals lost audience compared to the same period a year earlier.
Fox News still topped primetime, and it scored with last week’s coverage of the first Republican presidential debate, which drew 12.8 million viewers on the network and Fox Business. Fox News said the figure rose to 14.5 million when streaming, digital and encore airings were added. The debate was the highest rated non-sports telecast of the year in total viewers, the network said.
In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.03 million viewers, down 13% from the same month a year earlier. MSNBC averaged 1.55 million, up 19% from August, 2022. CNN averaged 723,000, down 1%.
In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 251,000, down 19%, versus MSNBC with 169,000, up 26%, and 147,000 for CNN, down 4%.
In total day, Fox News averaged 1.17 million, down 21%, compared to MSNBC with 952,000, up 18% and CNN with 545,000, down 3%. In the 25-54 demo,...

Former “Saturday Night Live” star, Jane Curtin, was taken by surprise by the longstanding show’s humourless early episodes.
Curtin, who served as one of the original “SNL” cast members, recently rewatched the award-winning comedy show’s earliest sketches with her family and was shocked by the absent laughter.
“We were sent the five year compilation video of ‘Saturday Night Live”s first five years a few years ago, and I gave one to my daughter,” Curtin, 75, recalled to People. “We were out visiting her daughter one Christmas, and her husband said, ‘Have you ever watched any of these? And I said, ‘God, I haven’t seen them in a long time.’

The Toronto International Film Festival will honor one of Canada’s own, Montreal native Shawn Levy, with the inaugural Norman Jewison Award, also named after another Canadian great filmmaker.
The Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award is presented by The Budman Family, and recognizes Canadians in the film industry who have made a global impact with their careers. The awards presentation will take place at the TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
Levy originally set about pursuing a career in acting, attending Yale University. He turned to directing and received an Mfa from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1994. One of Levy’s first acting gigs was the low-budget horror 1987 movie, Zombie Nightmare, which got poked at on an episode of Comedy Central’s Mystery Science Theater 3000. Whenever a producer in recent times has exited their partnership with a star, quite often said producer’s output is not as robust.
It’s a different situation for Bruna Papandrea, who after peeling off from Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Production Company has been on quite a roll with such TV hits as HBO’s The Undoing, Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal and Luckiest Girl Alive, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers and now the Prime Video limited series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart based on Holly Ringland’s novel. This is all under Papandrea’s six-year-old production banner Made Up Stories, which is devoted to female-centric stories.
On today’s Crew Call podcast, we talk with Papandrea about why she went solo with Made Up Stories, the genesis of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, and more.
Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows the story of the title protagonist.

CNN has attached a name and a launch date for Kaitlan Collins’ new primetime show.
“The Source with Kaitlan Collins” is set to premiere in its 9 p.m. Et timeslot on Monday, July 10. The new show, whose name vaguely references the network’s now-canceled “Reliable Sources,” hosted by Brian Stelter, will replace “CNN Primetime,” in the 9 p.m. hour, which Collins has been hosting over the past few weeks.
The new show will officially shift Collins off of “CNN This Morning” to primetime, leaving Collins’ co-host Poppy Harlow to host the morning program with a rotation of CNN guest anchors without a permanent co-host. While former CEO Chris Licht, who was ousted from the network in early June, lined up the re-imagined morning program in fall 2022 with Collins, Harlow and Don Lemon, the trio has since been broken up after Lemon exited the network in April.

CNN may have cleared its schedule of “Reliable Sources,” but it is making lots of room for “The Source.”
The new program, which will be based in New York and is slated to debut Monday, July 10, at 9 p.m. eastern, is a new hour built around up-and-coming anchor Kaitlan Collins, who has, in the space of just a few years, vaulted from White House correspondent to morning co-anchor to primetime personality. Collins has been leading CNN’s 9 p.m. hour over the past few weeks, but under a catch-all rubric of “CNN Primetime,” which also encompassed town-hall specials and deep-dive interviews with newsmakers led by others.
CNN announced the new program Tuesday night during its Fourth of July coverage and musical celebration, which typically attract a broader audience than its usual weekday schedule.

Fox News continued to dominate in the January cable news ratings, drawing more viewers, on average, than the combined audience of rivals MSNBC and CNN.
But when it comes to total day viewing, MSNBC and CNN each showed a slight improvement from the same month in 2022, as the weeklong drama of the House speaker election provided a ratings bump.
Fox News still led in total day viewers, averaging 1.35 million viewers, which was down 4 from the same month a year earlier. MSNBC averaged 703,000, up 7, while CNN posted 524,000, up 7.
In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 173,000, down 23, while CNN was up 7 with 107,000 and MSNBC rose 5 to 78,000.

New CNN boss Chris Licht’s latest — and biggest — shakeup of the news network’s lineup signals an attempt to hit two (or three) birds with one stone.
By shifting Don Lemon from his 10 p.m. Et perch after a seven-year run, Licht is eliminating the lowest-rated show in primetime cable news, according to August ratings from Nielsen Media Research — while also quieting critics who have targeted Lemon’s opinionated hosting style. And by tapping Lemon to lead the network’s as-yet-untitled new morning show alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, Licht also aims to give new life to another key part of the schedule that has long lagged behind MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” in viewership.

Scott Bakula is setting the record straight on why he is not involved in NBC’s Quantum Leap reboot and shuts down any speculation that he might reprise his role on the sequel, which premieres this coming Monday, September 19.
“I have no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it,” Bakula wrote in a social media post next to a boxing scene photo from the original series that gives out a “ready for a fight” vibe. He said that he was presented with the pilot script and passed on getting involved.
Fall Premiere Dates For New & Returning TV Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming
There has been confusion over possible Bakula involvement in the reboot, which is headlined by Raymond Lee. When the pilot pickup was announced in January, sources revealed that Bakula was not attached to reprise his role or produce but was aware of the reboot,...

Social media lit up after Monday night’s Emmys in response to what many perceived as a misguided bit by Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel, after being dragged on stage by Will Arnett, proceeded to lay on the floor while “Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson gave her Emmys speech for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Many online felt the moment was offensive and that Kimmel should have gotten up off the floor. (The joke was that Kimmel got drunk before being called up to the stage after losing an earlier Emmy.)
One person who agreed with them is newly minted Emmy winner and fellow “Abbott” star Sheryl Lee Ralph. During ABC’s TCA panel devoted to the second season of “Abbott,” Ralph offered up her thoughts on how the Kimmel bit played in the room. “I was absolutely confused. I had no idea what I was going on,” she said.

Last year’s Emmy ceremony, which aired on CBS, reversed two straight years of all-time lows. That broadcast drew 7.83 million viewers and a 1.81 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the best marks for the Emmys since 2018. Mondays show slipped by about 24 percent in viewers and nearly 40 percent in the 18-49 demographic.

Kaley Cuoco and her boyfriend, Tom Pelphrey, were both nominated for Emmys on July 12, and the couple celebrated each other's success by making their red carpet debut at the ceremony one month later on Monday, Sept. 12. Cuoco looked gorgeous in a pink gown, while Pelphrey suited up for the big night.
Shortly after the nominations were announced in July, Pelphrey uploaded a video to Instagram of Cuoco hearing about her honor and covering her face with her hands. In the video, he hugs Cuoco and says "Yes, baby!" In the accompanying caption, he wrote, "Also. . .Congratulations To My Favorite Actress!!! Such beautiful, brave work. Beyond grateful to share this with you today."

“For a little while I had ‘Dopesick’ here,” says Gold Derby Editor Denton Davidson about his Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series. “But I recently switched to ‘The White Lotus,’ which is the front-runner. It did so well at Creative Arts last weekend. I think that shows that it has some serious strength … But I do think ‘Dopesick’ is in there” as a strong potential challenger. Watch Davidson slug it out with fellow Editors Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery above.
Before the Emmy nominations were announced, “Dopesick” was actually the front-runner to win Best Limited Series. But that quickly changed when the nominations were unveiled on July 12. “Dopesick” received an impressive 14 bids, but “The White Lotus” exploded our expectations by receiving 20, including eight of the 14 available slots in the supporting acting categories. Now “White Lotus” is the heavy favorite according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.

The typical evening-news program give viewers all the news they need to know in less than 30 minutes. John Dickerson’s take on the format aims to unpack the headlines of the day and offer something most news programs don’t — perspective.
Dickerson will lead CBS News’ step into an emerging frontier, an evening-news program that doesn’t air on a TV network, but streams instead, presumably for a younger, more tech-savvy audience. “CBS News Prime Time With John Dickerson,” a new hour-long program, debuts tonight at 7 p.m. eastern on CBS News’ streaming outlets, and will appear live Monday through Thursday. The goal is for Dickerson, a former host of “Face The Nation” and a longtime political journalist and analyst, to provide insight and historical context around the events of the day so viewers gain a deeper understanding of the news cycle.
