His was my favorite NHK weekly series back in the 1980s. I remember looking forward to it. It was a nice break from NHK's usual samurai dramas. Mita Yoshiko is a great actress. And the theme music is hauntingly beautiful.
I also don't know if there is a version with English subtitles. But this was great for practicing Japanese.
The name Inochi means Life, and it does take you through a lifetime, concentrating on the main character, played by Mita Yoshiko. It also takes you through a time of huge change in postwar Japan, and you can feel yourself living through it with the characters.
I would love to meet Mita Yoshiko sometime!
