Maybe the best Spanish comedy of 2009
mangafan14 February 2010
2009 was a really bad year for Spanish movies, till the very end of the year din't arrived any good title to our cinemas. Then suddenly arrived Rec 2, Agora, Celda 211... some great movies than saved the year. But between all that great movies was a very nice title than passed walking on tiptoes... not great promotions, not great supports from celebrities or TV channels... just a great idea, a great director, a nice script and a solvent actors.

This movie is not only about some fat guys than try to get his nice weigh, is about humanity, about how everyone try to get his way, about how people can avoid the obstacles and look to the future. It is about everyone, every guy/girl takes a different perspective of the problems... and much more. But It is not everything, is a great comedy. Maybe you will not burst out laughing, but you will show a great smile all the time, and maybe some laugh. The very nice part of this movie is than don't mind how sad is a that moment, always show a happy face of everything.

Is some more positive points in this movie, the dialog are realistic, fun and VERY intelligent. All the characters are perfectly defined, but maybe the gay guy fails cause his stranger relationship with his best friend wife. Every actor does a great work, no one looks like over-acted or trying to remember his dialog just like the most of the Spanish movie. Seem than Daniel Sánchez is really a very solvent director, and was not only lucky his Azul Oscuro Casi Negro the previous movie.

I really want to recommended this movie for everyone than are looking for take a nice time with a intelligent movie.

Nutty and nice comedy starred by a great Spanish cast directed by expert comedian filmmaker Daniel Sánchez Arévalo
ma-cortes12 July 2016
Daniel Sánchez Arévalo's Gordos (Fat People) is another funny Dramedy romp , it is a bemusing story that contains lots of humor , entertainment and brief touches of drama . While there's a framing device that bookends each act , the story properly gets started when a group of overweight people visit a therapy consulting room ; involving some patients (Antonio De La Torre , Raúl Arévalo , Leticia Herrero , Fernando Albizu) and their therapist (Roberto Enriquez), following the excesses and deprivation of life . It deals with problems ensue on a lot of fat people and regarding their survival in the widest and "largest" sense of the word . Concerning about insecurities , complexes , phobias , obsessions, traumas , mistakes , fears , blame, desires, hopes , challenges , concessions, goals, relationships, love, sex, health, family and sex are aired in a group therapy against obesity.

GORDOS" is a comedy about life's excesses and deficiencies ; packing emotion , laughs , love stories and philosophy . Fun and uplifting Spanish romantic comedy with crazy events , entertainment and absurd situations . Being original and compellingly written by screen-writer and filmmaker Daniel Sanchez Arévalo , though being inferior to other films directed by him . ¨Fat people¨ is a decent film, but not because it resists the easy joke or gross-out gag. It embraces them, and turns what could have been a simple comedy drama into something far deeper and more affecting in the process . This agreeable film packs amusement , comical situations , tongue-in-cheek , surrealist comedy including conventional pitfalls and many other things . Sitting in a strange middle ground between the completely absurd and the stylishly cool . This is a fast crazy movie about the close relationships among sweetheart couples with a lot of fun situations , antics , bemusement and a bunch of very hilarious roles . It's still an obvious commercial film, with some predictable plot beats. It's too long, and it can't keep the quality up all the way through the ending . Still, it's a laudably adult production, earthy, smutty and raw yet witty, intelligent and deeply , deeply moving with it . This is a slightly funny film with entertaining events , giggles , emotion , profanities and romances . The film moves in fits and starts most of which would be desirable , with more traps the viewer resists any kind, and some moments of enjoyment and others quite a few ridiculous . Humor is sometimes cheesy and gross-out with numerous naughty and picaresque situations such as sex jokes , bad taste , and adult scenes , including a lot of intercourse . This is a special Spanish comedy from the 2000s with the usual ingredients such as wild humor topped with a little bit of original touches here and there and the tone of the film is light-hearted . It's an attractive , moving film , perfectly acted and concerning the narration about the relationships among some peculiar patients and their spouses , children , fiancée , fiancé , brides and , in addition , a particular relation between a therapist and his pregnant wife.

The choral cast is pretty well , giving enticing performances such as Roberto Enriquez as a therapist who regularly meets with a handful of clients struggling to deal with the physical and emotional problems of being overweight , Antonio De La Torre as an actor best known as the spokesman for weight loss product who loses his job now that he is fat again and Raul Arévalo as a committed Christian who ignores her sexual needs . Arévalo got sick trying to gain weight, so Daniel Sánchez Arévalo came up with another finale to redeem him . Other important actors who appear in the film are the followings : Verónica Sánchez , Fernando Albizu , Pilar Castro , Leticia Herrero , Adam Jezierski , Teté Delgado , Roberto Álamo and Pepa Arniote . Colorful cinematography by Juan Carlos Gomez , Daniel Sánchez Arevalo's usual cameraman . Atmospheric and charming musical score by by Parcal Gaigne , an expert composer who has composed and conducted a lot of scores such as ¨Mensaka¨ , ¨Dream of Light¨ , ¨Silencio Roto¨ , ¨Piedras¨, ¨Azuloscurocasinegro¨ , ¨Loreal¨ or ¨Flowers¨ and many others .

The motion picture was well produced by José Antonio Félez and nicely directed by Daniel Arévalo . Production took over 11 months because the movie was shot in chronological order and the actors had to gain and lose weight . Daniel Sánchez Arevalo tries to mix genres ranging from romantic comedy to drama with some offbeat touches . Daniel Sánchez Arévalo was born on 1970 in Madrid, and being son of Jose Ramon Sánchez , a prestigious artist , drawer and painter . His fetish actor turns out to be Quim Gutiérrez . He is a good writer, and filmmaker , known for ¨Azuloscurocasinegro¨ (2006), ¨Gordos¨ (2009) and ¨Primos¨ at his best . His last film turns out to be ¨La Gran Familia Española¨ or "Family United" (2013) , it is plenty of emotional and family feeling in which solidarity triumphs and humor despite the blackness . ¨Fats¨ Rating : Passable and acceptable 5.5/10 . Well worth watching

Great, intelligent film

It helps a lot if you master Spanish when you see this film, not only Spanish but a good amount of lingo from Madrid, as some of the comments, twists and jokes loose quite a bit during translation.

You laugh, laugh and laugh but at no time you miss drama nor plot, the movie evolves well and, though the ending is not my favorite, wraps a great comedy.

Seem no human emotion goes untouched by this movie, love, sex and relationships displayed constantly in a very smart fashion.

Last, the amazing transformation of the characters, speechless.

It is so refreshing to see smart, well presented movies, in an era where CG and FX dominate the American movie industry, some should go to Spain to take a class ( or two), but again, it seems the majority of American public is not ready for anything that goes beyond video game quality, pity.

Wrong title...

Warning: Spoilers
I don't get the need that some Spanish films have to show people having sex in any circumstances, people in a bathroom or things like that. I'm not a puritan at all and I'm not making a point about. I believe that this movie is not about fat people or not, it's about people with guiltiness and prejudices about their sexual life.

Sometimes I have the conviction that some Spanish directors are in their preadolescence age so they take any subject and make in pass through the "sex filter" . They need to show people having sex because...I don't know.

The movie itself it's OK, acting work it's just magnificent but I'm still believe that the title doesn't match what the director wanted to show. In fact I don't really know yet what the director wanted to show. I have the impression that he made a script which basically was "ok guys, let's show how different average people reacts in different circumstances and reflect that in they sexual life. We will use as an alibi fatness, but in fact it will be a movie about the sexual life of normal people".

Forgettable.

Don't miss it!

Warning: Spoilers
This film was absolutely excellent! The characters were so relate-able -not just their struggles with appearance and weight, but also with elements of their personal lives. Although the genre is comedy/drama, I found it to be much more of a drama, with some funny moments that will probably make you smile rather than laugh.

Throughout the film each of the character's stories are gone through in detail and the viewer is given an intimate insight into their personalities - somewhat clichéd but, overall, very entertaining.

If at first you don't get into it, make sure you persevere, as the ending is one of the saddest and most beautiful endings I've seen.

This is a bad movie. It has some few funny things, you will smile sometimes. Not laugh, just smile. Other than that this movie feels too long. The characters are very plain, they were taken directly from the "drawing board", they doesn't feel like real persons.

The performances are not bad, and because of that it's nice to see some of the characters in this movie, but the plot ends up ruining the movie.

The only attraction here might be to see the weight changes the cast had had to make this movie. If the weight changes were real (and they seem so) it's a pity these people have risked their health for such a bad movie.
