Murder Wasn't Fashionable In This Famous Case
ccthemovieman-16 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Once in a while, the program covers a case that was nationally-known. This is one of them; the murder of fashion king Giavanni Versace, in South Beach in Miami, Fla. The murderer, Andrew Cunanan, became semi-famous. What I didn't remember, that this episode points out, is that Cunanan was a serial killer and had made the FBI's "Most Wanted List" just prior to his shooting of Versace.

Anyway, I bet over half of this one-hour program was about South Beach, rather than the murder. Just about every adjective you can think of was used in here. It makes the program's opening line, ".......the last place you'd expect a murder," not to hold true in this case. This is a pretty wild place that doesn't need any embellishment from me. The TV show exhibits almost everything you can expect to see if you visited the area in the '90s or even now.

What's kind of sad and shallow are the local residents - from newspaper critics and authors to nightclub owners and others - who seem to glorify all the glitz and glamor and make that seem like that's the most important thing in life. If you're beautiful or a celebrity, then you almost deified by the people interviewed on this show. Every kind of lifestyle imaginable is flaunted here with plenty of flesh showing.

The Versace killing was a gay-related crime with both the victim and killer being of such persuasion, and with a high gay community population in the immediate area, this was particularly scary for them. Several gays discuss this stating it was nerve-wracking period as they wondered, "Is this deranged killer going to shoot me next?" It was a relief to many when this was over.

That ending was abrupt, as we find out at the end of the show. There was no apprehension and no trial, no controversy. It was almost anticlimactic. If you know what Cunanan did in the end, you know what I mean.

Anyway, if you want a pretty complete portrait of South Beach, this program certainly offers it.
