Mateo Finds Love In A Hopeless Place
jamericanbeauty13 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Bill Skarsgard ard and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett sizzle as Mateo and Jonah. They have great chemistry, even during their initial awkward encounter. Their (mis)adventure to find Mateo's passport felt like an interactive, wild and exciting night in Mexico. The script feels like a series of eccentric and superficial events thrown together without any rhyme or reason and most of it didn't work. In the final closing minutes, the show's writing gets smart when Mateo decides to make his own decision about love, instead of letting soul-mating technology choose for him. In the end, I found myself rooting for Mateo and Jonah. Sure, Jonah wronged him initially, but he redeemed himself during that fateful, long night together.

They truly let down the gays

I don't often write bad reviews but this episode was just a travesty and a great example of straight people writing gay storylines. Terrible acting. Terrible script. Terrible direction.

What?

Seriously. What? Setup was ok, but went downhill from there. Terrible acting, predictable plot, no twists, no chemistry, etc.

This might be one of the worst episodes of a tv show I've ever seen. Ever.

I'd advise anyone to skip this one and look at a wall for an hour. That's an hour well spent compared to looking at this garbage.

What was that?

Face palming pretty hard on this episode. Couldn't even finish it. First three episodes were alright, watchable, however this one is a huge let down. Bill's appearance is comical here. I'll give the rest of the series a miss, I'd suggest you all do the same.

Fun to Watch, Some Subtlty

One of the few episodes in the series that actually worked well. The essential concept of Soulmates is that there is one person you'll love most, that doesn't mean they'll make you the happiest or make you the best person. Bill Skarsgård's character is awkward, disconnected and emotionally closed, to the point where it's difficult to watch. He slowly changes and becomes more likeable, more engaged, more of a person. There's a lot missing here, such as a bigger apology from Jonah and an explanation as to why the crystal ball was such a big deal, but ultimately it was about the difference between perfect love and a love built on shared experience and the potential to change one another for the more interesting (even if not necessarily for the better).

Off-topic, out of style, annoying.

So far, but I think also by far the worst episode. A cheap comedy, unnecessarily long and disrespectful of a series that would so much like to approach a kind of black mirror themed "soul mates." Accustomed to dealing with the theme of making the right choice, of confronting the past and the future, in this installment we will instead have unnecessary twists and turns, improbable situations (is this a boring version of The Hangover?), ridiculous character characters, and insufficient respect for Mexican culture I think this is Evan Placey's small-screen debut; I will neither watch nor read anything by him again.
