The story of a french thief.
searchanddestroy-114 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It's obvious that this little crime yarn looks like Michael Mann's THE THIEF, starring the great James Caan. The tale of a lonely - or nearly - safe cracker who wants to quit the business but is forced to pull a last heist. A common topic, I admit. In this film, it's not Robert Prosky he has to face, but Maurice Benichou.

Not a bad movie, but Steve Suissa - the director - is not Michael Mann. Nicolas Cazale is a very promising actor, look for him in the future. A star is born.

Paris is well shown, especially the ninth district, around the famous Folies Bergeres.

It's a solid story of friendship, family and blood lines but ( SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS ) the ending destroys most of the entire film.

There is a sequence that could have been erased: Cazale, the safe cracker, goes to get the torch he will have to use for the heist. And in that purpose, guess where he finds his supplier. In a bakery, yes, a bakery, among the young workers. And he tests the torch just in front of them...A totally stupid and senseless sequence.

I will finish on pointing out that Anthony Delon is very interesting in Cazale's accomplice character.
