- In part two of the season premiere, the female celebrities -- Shannon Elizabeth, Marlee Matlin, Priscilla Presley, Monica Seles, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Kristi Yamaguchi -- show us their moves with the help of their dance partners.
- The six women competing for the "Dancing With the Stars" title took to the dance floor for the first time. The women had to wait through the guys' performances from the previous night before they got their chance to shine. Host Tom Bergeron pointed out that this is the show's most accomplished group of women, including an Oscar winner (Marlee Matlin), a Tony winner (Marissa Jaret Winokur), an Olympic gold medalist (Kristi Yamaguchi) and a Grand Slam tennis champion (Monica Seles). What do you have to say for yourselves, Shannon Elizabeth and Priscilla Presley? The scores and votes from the opening week's performances and Week 2 would be added together and one man and one woman would be eliminated after the second week's dances.
Shannon & Derek, Cha Cha Cha: Shannon Elizabeth was introduced as having been named one of Maxim magazine's hottest women in the world, though she's best known for her part in "American Pie." Shannon's partner Derek Hough, who enters his second season, said that last year he came in as a boy and this year he's coming in as a man. He worried that in the past, beautiful girls get voted off early (hear that, Kelly Monaco?). Shannon said she's had trouble with high heels, so she now wears them all the time. Shannon and Derek danced the Cha Cha Cha to Rhianna's "Shut Up and Drive." Judge Len Goodman thought it was a "great start to the season" but she needs to work on her leg work. Bruno Tonioli said she has great legs and needs to learn to use them. Carrie Ann Inaba said she "nailed it." Scores: 7, 7 and 7.
Monica & Jonathan, Foxtrot: Monica Seles' intro video featured her playing tennis in heels (take that, Shannon!). Her partner, Jonathan Roberts said he wants to go all the way after making it to the finals last year. Monica, known for her toughness on the court, struggled in practices with the softer, gentler side of dancing. Monica and Jonathan danced the Foxtrot to Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" -- the "talk to my toes and crinkle my nose song." It started with Monica playing Jonathan's scorned lover before accepting his outstretched hand. Bruno loved that she set a "Grace Kelly"-like tone for the dance at the start, but "unfortunately" as the dance progressed, "it turned a little bit Grace Adler," making a "Will & Grace" reference. Len loved the romance and the story, but suggested she strengthen her core to become lighter on the dance floor. Scores: 5, 5 and 5.
Marissa & Tony, Cha Cha Cha: Marissa Jaret Winokur won a Tony for her role as Tracy Turnblad in the Broadway production of "Hairspray" and she wants to prove that women of any size can dance. Her partner, Tony Davolani has been on the show for five years and thinks it's just as important to have fun as it is to work hard. Marissa and Tony danced the Cha Cha Cha to "Low" by Flo-Rida (with T. Pain). They gave a fun, flirty performance that included some rump shakin' and a booty smack, delivered by Marissa to Tony. Carrie Ann loved Marissa's style and sass, but she didn't think there was enough content for a Cha Cha. Bruno said she did the dance like a Solid Gold dancer and wasn't a true Cha Cha Cha. Len was "bewitched, bothered and bewildered": bewitched by the performance, bothered by a mistake and bewildered by the fact that Tony didn't give Marissa more to do, respectively.Scores: 6, 6, and 6.
Priscilla & Louis van Amstel, Foxtrot: Priscilla Presley reminded viewers of her roles in the "Naked Gun" movies, "Dallas" and as Elvis' wife. She said she's a very private person, but it feels good to "get out there, roll your sleeves up and start participating -- again." Her partner Louis van Amstel said he's very competitive. Priscilla told him she didn't want to be treated delicately. So he suggested they try a "death spiral." Priscilla and Louis danced the Foxtrot to "Feeling Good." The couple pulled off the death spiral, at least, and the crowd rose to its feet for a standing ovation. Len commended Louis for choreographing a "beautiful, fluid Foxtrot" and that they did a "great, great job." Bruno called it an "uncompromising, smoking hot Foxtrot" and suggested Priscilla work on her shoulders. Carrie Ann said Priscilla (the most "mature" woman the show has ever had) proved "age is just a number" and called it "just so elegant." Scores: 8, 8 and 8.
Kristi & Mark, Foxtrot: Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi said she's doing the show because she's always loved entertaining. Her partner Mark Ballas called himself a "young gun" and he's "ready to shoot down the competition." Kristi and Mark danced the Foxtrot to the classic jazz standard "The More I See You." Bruno said it was "absolutely wicked" and that the show is now on a roll. He loved the timing and precision and said, "for the first round, one of the best performances I've ever seen." Carrie Ann wondered how Kristi made it look so effortless "and that is perfection, to me." Len said "the ice maiden as just melted my heart." He said there were a couple of little critiques, "things that I normally wouldn't even look at on the first week" and wrapped up by saying, "You are a really talented woman." The performance scored not only the first "9" of the season, but the first three of them. Scores: 9, 9 and 9.
Marlee & Fabian, Cha Cha Cha: Marlee Matlin started her quest to prove that "just because you're deaf doesn't mean you can't dance -- I hope." Her partner Fabian Sanchez, making his debut on "Dancing With the Stars," said he's known as the king of the Mambo. Fabian acknowledged it will be a challenge to teach Marlee to dance, and found out that she can sometimes hear the beat, depending on the music. They're going to use visual cues to get through their performances. Marlee and Fabian danced the Cha Cha Cha to Gloria Estefan's "Get On Your Feet." Carrie Ann said it was almost unbelievable and that "what you did out there was so inspiring." She reminded Marlee and viewers that she will be judged based on what the judges see on the dance floor because that's what's fair. Len agreed, calling it "an amazing performance" and reminded Marlee to try to control her arms a little more. Bruno told Marlee "you may not hear, but the music is running through your blood." He said he counted all the way through and she hardly missed a beat. Scores: 7, 7 and 8.
The tally of judges' scores:
Kristi & Mark: 27
Priscilla & Louis: 24
Marlee & Louis: 22
Shannon & Derek: 21
Marissa & Tony: 18
Monica & Jonathan: 15
