Skies of Lebanon, the directorial debut of Chloé Mazlo, has been acquired for the U.S. by Dekanalog. The distributor is aiming to release the film theatrically on July 22.
A poetic blending of the personal and political, Skies of Lebanon combines live action with animation to create a vivid picture of Lebanon, inspired by the family history of filmmaker Mazlo. Using stories told to her by her grandmother about life during the Lebanese Civil War, Mazlo crafts what the producers describe as a “touching and heart-breaking story of love during wartime.”
The film sees Alba Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro) play Alice, a Swiss woman who moves to Beirut in the 1950s and falls in love with a Lebanese man. Wajdi Mouawad (author of the play Incendies, which was the source material for Denis Villeneuve’s 2010 film with that same title) plays Joseph, an...

Running Jan. 14-Feb. 14, this year’s MyFrenchFilmFestival, an online fest organized by France’s film-tv promotional body UniFrance, will mark its 12th edition with a more diversified slate and a greater international push.
Showcasing festival gems, animated crowd-pleasers and outré genre fare – all subtitled in 15 languages – the 13 features and 17 shorts of this year’s selection will reach home viewers via 70 partner platforms as well on MyFrenchFilmFestival.com, where all the shorts will be available to screen free of charge.
Though ranging in presentational style from horror-comedy to bittersweet drama, the 10 films in this year’s feature competition often share similar thematic through lines, with nearly half of them looking at youth struggles from one angle or another. While Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma’s werewolf thriller “Teddy” tackles late teen growing pains through a more genre prism, Kamir Aïnouz’s “Honey Cigar” does so as a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale; when exploring young adult malaise,...

After a muted 2020 due to Covid-19, the Norwegian International Film Festival in the picturesque coastal town of Haugesund will be back in full force over Aug. 21-27, with attendance expected to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels, both for the on-site festival and parallel hybrid confab New Nordic Films, according to festival director Tonje Hardersen.
“The pandemic is still impacting Haugesund, forcing us to apply social distancing measures, notably in cinemas – with a maximum of 400 spectators per screen – but last year’s event gave us confidence,” she said. “The audience and industry reception last year was very positive, everyone is eager to meet in person, and I sense that the end of full Covid restrictions is getting closer. “
Haugesund’s fest honcho went on: “What sticks out is that 2021 has been very tough for the overall Norwegian film industry due to the pandemic, but it’s been a glorious year for Norwegian film production,...

Cannes’ parallel section has selected and will lend its support to films signed by Chloé Mazlo, Anna Cazenave Cambet, Aleem Khan, Naël Marandin and Just Philippot. It might have proved impossible for the 59th edition of Critics’ Week to unspool in Cannes in person as a result of the health crisis, but the Croisette-based parallel section is continuing to shine a light on emerging talent and has now put together a support programme, “Cannes Outside the Walls”, for the five feature films and ten shorts selected by the team overseen by artistic director Charles Tesson. Standing tall among the works set to benefit from the “Critics’ Week 2020” label are two first feature films from French female directors: Skies of Lebanon by Chloé Mazlo (starring Italy’s Alba Rohrwacher – read our article) and Gold for Dogs by Anna Cazenave Cambet (produced by Charles Gillibert on behalf of CG Cinéma).A further.
