Effective horror tale Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed a lot the four "animated comics" based in the "I Am Legend" movie starring Will Smith. In many ways, those four animated shorts are able to show from a much more complex and fascinating perspective all the horror and grief that are part of the apocalyptic setting where the story of the movie takes place, showing the struggles and desperation of some survivors in different parts of the worlds.

The third story, "Shelter", is the most gruesome, and yet, the most fascinating of those stories. Even if the development is a bit predictable, the result is still pretty impressive, with a magnificent atmosphere, great artwork with many effective scenes.

It also shows that, in what concerns about love and horror stories, not everything have been said.

Impeccable

This is the third of the four "animated comics" on the I Am Legend DVD, taking place in the same universe as the picture. It is by far the best of the ones I've seen thus far, meaning all but the last one. Using lighting and the entire spectrum of color, the style captures the moods and situations perfectly, and cinematography and editing are beyond reproach. There is dialog in this, however, not one word is spoken. It is all in speech-bubbles on the screen. I would say that the choice to do it like that makes sense once you've seen this whole short, and it does fit, as well. This always has the exact right amount of motion or stillness, and is a must-watch for any aficionado of the drawn art. This captured my full attention and never lost it in a manner neither of the first two can boast, and the nine minutes are subject to perfect pacing and excellent story-telling. The twist is devastating, and this manages to be more compelling than the film itself. There is disturbing content and gruesome, bloody violence in this. This doesn't have any strong language. I recommend this to any fan of dark fiction, whether or not you've seen and/or enjoyed the movie that it is a spin-off to. 8/10

Could have been better

Warning: Spoilers
"Shelter" is the third of 4 "I Am Legend" animated short films from almost 10 years ago and at 8.5 minutes it is also the longest. Unfortunately, it is as forgettable as the second movie and clearly worse than the first which is still the best of the series. I am yet to see the last one though. Anyway, back to this one. It starts as a love story, but ends as a gory horror story. And again I must say that I would not have known that this is "I Am Legend" without the title reference. It has not anything to do with the Will Smith movie really. The animation style is not my preferred choice either. It looks like taken right out of a comic book and the characters are barely moving. All in all, a disappointing watch. Not recommended.
