Ninja Run and Gunners
This is another edition in the under the radar video series and one of my personal favorite video games of all time.
This game of course was created by the same people that did "Sunsetriders" which of course is another of my favorite games also and a story for another time. After that game they decided to you can say do the same thing but this time with ninjas. Which makes sense as the ninja craze and martial arts movies were still going strong after the 80's and were still thriving and growing throughout the mid 90's. This game was obviously inspired by those things but also by anime shows mainly "Gatchaman"; playing this game still makes me wonder why that series still hasn't got a video game.
Anyway, playing this game was just a dream come true as Ninja's have always been my favorite type of warrior so having a run and gun game based on them was just perfect. The graphical presentation is great, it's pretty much the same as with "Sunset Riders" which I'm fine with as I honestly wouldn't want it any other way. Looking at it know it's even better because the animation is 90's goodness, for the curious run and gun rookies this game is a good history relic to behold from that era long gone. But of course, for the veterans it just really gives you those nostalgic vibes of being a 90's kid again when you use to go to the video arcade at the mall to play this game.
The gameplay is of course the same as with "Sunsetriders" where you have four people to choose from depending on your preference. I personally like playing as the blue ninja and even the female ninja who has nice aerobics suit as both are a little more balanced or that's just how I feel anyway.
You shoot out shuriken's which can increase in power, speed, and even spread depending on whether you collect the power ups. I even like that you have a melee attack which is slicing enemies with your katana which to me is extremely useful defense as enemies will bunch up on you fast but was also one of the first run and guns to solve that fundamental problem whenever that happened. The other run and gun game that did this was "Metal Slug" which came a few years after this game and that franchise is another story for another time.
Really love music as there are plenty of memorable tunes and few made my personal fav and workout tunes list. Of course, what really makes this game stand out is in its over-the-top action with tongue and cheek humor. This game now doubt is over the top and that's what's beautiful about it as it reflects and gives the feel of being in an action film or an anime show from the 90's era. There are constant ninja flunkies of all kinds just coming at you left and right and you must take them out before they take you out. Numerous explosions of all kinds that could put any super sentai and Michael Bay film to shame.
All kinds of locations to go to and what you must do, like in a snow level you ski and shoot like in a James Bond film. As well as fight of the boss, one favorite of mine is a giant mecha boss which is your usual David vs. Goliath motif, but I always love it because hey it's ninjas vs giant mecha were talking about here, that's some you don't see every day (and still haven't in the anime world.) The other thing about the game is of course the humor, this game clearly doesn't take itself seriously. From some of the expressions of the characters when they're hurt or taking on pain it's sort of slapstick humor much like you would see from "The Three Stooges" sort of. But also, from how much further you go in the game and how much the action crazily ramps up, you just realize how much crazier and ridiculous the ongoing plotline of the game is. Which is part of why when I play this game, I can hardly keep a straight face, but that's a good feeling like with watching a good action film I'm playing this game to have just that plain fun.
Mystic Warriors in Ninjariffic.
Rating: 4 stars.
