Horses Should Not Wear Boots In The Kitchen
boblipton31 October 2022
How the wrong horse got into the kitchen wearing boots in less than ten minutes in this short starring Tom Kennedy, Chick Chandler, and helium-voiced Jeannie Roberts is a series of misunderstandings simply breathtaking in their progression. And that's only the beginning, because when you've got a horse, you're going to get a horse race in this very funny short from RKO, directed by Fred Guiol.

The downside of this short, and one of the reasons it is hard to see, is that Willie Best is doing one of his "Sleep 'n Eat" roles as the horse's groom/jockey. He was capable of much better, as he would later show.

Not among my favorites! In fact, some of it's pretty bad.

Chick Chandler and Tom Kennedy made several comedies together...and if they're like "Horse Heir" then I'm in no hurry to see them.

Chick is trying to sell his cheap horse to a lady with a grating and annoying voice...sort of like Betty Boop. Jeanie is married to Tom and apparently she got the money from him. However, the pair accidentally take the wrong horse...instead of a broken down nag, it's a top racehorse. When they find out, they do their best to hide it by painting the horse. Hilarity ensues...or should have ensued.

The film has a lot to dislike. Most of the problems are that the film just isn't very funny and Jeanie Roberts' voice could curdle milk! Add to that a really badly filmed racing sequence at the end and a slapstick finale...and it all adds up to tedium.
