Good refreshing show in what is usually a PC hipster infested area
waneagony19 July 2020
I enjoyed this show. I've been to Japan a couple of times and enjoyed seeing some of the places that I have visited on TV. Most of the food travel shows today are way too PC and take themselves way too seriously. Obviously not all food will taste good and Paul s the only one that I have seen that actually speaks his mind when he doesn't like something and why. This is a breath of fresh air in this hipster infested area where anything foreign (read non white culture) is automatically wonderful and splendid. I hope we get more shows like this, but woke culture will most likely vote it down with a vengeance.

Really enjoyed it

Warning: Spoilers
If you like food programmes you will love this. I've never known Paul from anything other than GBBO. So to see him in a different light is nice! He's such a great chap. The first episode when he's in the booth I couldn't stop laughing, he had the attention span of a 5yo looking around, leaning back and being nosey when really you wouldn't see anyone from Japan do that because of the whole point of those booths. Rather funny. It also opened my eyes to what Japanese people eat and in all honesty, looks amazing!! Great show. I hope he does more of these but obv different countries. 😃

I didn't know Paul Hollywood was so culturally insensitive

I only suffered through the first episode. I can't imagine the final two are any better. This show makes me miss Anthony Bourdain even more than I already do. Paul should really get back to his competition shows.

Insensitive and ignorant

A shockingly bad, culturally insensitive program. The narrator is unnecessarily sarcastic. It's unclear whether Paul Hollywood is really this ignorant or if it's an act. Very disappointing.

Ignorant British bloke travels japan

A really bad representation of japan. Paul Hollywood is Uninteresting and ignorant. His poor attitude is offensive. He is a typical Brit abroad. It is embarrassing. Japan is a wonderful country this show does represent that.

Such a shame, missed potential
I was looking forward to this and seeing a different side to Paul Hollywood. A different side was certainly evident; unfortunately one of a culturally insensitive (and borderline offensive at times) which sadly reinforces the negative stereotypes of 'Brits Abroad'. What should be an informative journey of Japanese culture through cuisine is epitomised in one one scene where Mr Hollywood himself says, "that is wasted on me, I'm such a peasant". Further adding to the disappointment is Rebecca Front's inane narrative throughout which comes across as more idiotic than comedic. Other mini-series from British presenters on Japan (that ironically haven't focused on food) have done a much better and balanced job on exploring Japanese cuisine.

This misses the mark completely

Oh dear.

Paul Hollywood is an engaging host, but this programme didn't work for me. He should stick to straight cookery shows and Bake Off where he's in his element.

ITV really haven't been able to come up with much quality during Lockdown have they?

If I can give this 0 stars, I would in a heartbeat.

I had my hopes up at first because I've seen him in GBBO, this was quickly dissipated in the first episode. I had to stop multiple times because of how shocked and angry I was at his mindless, narrow-minded, senseless comments about EVERYTHING. I hope he doesn't go visit any other countries 'east of India'! Lord knows he'll have a heart attack when he realises Asians aren't all just about rice and noodles as he so graciously commented. (like we needed another example of

I'm just so disappointed in him, he has such a big influence in food shows in the UK. So it's no wonder so many British people say they enjoy this, but I have to people why did the show choose him to host- like was he actually first pick?😂

If you're going to a different country you admit you have no knowledge off (episode 1), why can't you just quickly Google japanese etiquette on your way there, or even when you've arrived. Although that would've been pointless anyways, seeing as he disregarded all of the etiquette lessons a local guide taught him literally the next day.

Overall, I will never recommend this show to someone unless it's to show how you should NOT behave in Japan. Frankly anyone who thinks this show is educational should do their research.
